I thought about a 3" lift w/ 33's but fortunately very early on getting into off roading Jeeps, many told me, their TJ became very sluggish going from just 32's to 33's in addition to a domino effect of needing additional expensive parts, and I'm glad I listened! Because I drove a TJ with this set up and it didn't have that great 4.0 low end torque, and was very slow off the line. And most of them returned to 32's while some fell for the aftermarket bait, very expensive bait. I get many who want to know what is the perfect build. Which is not easy to answer because everyone does different things with their Jeep. But I would like to share mine since my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn drives and handles absolutely amazing on and off road. Keep in mind, I am NOT a rock crawler, I'm an adventurer who takes the family beach wheelin, beach camping, surf fishing, and we hit fun, moderate trails in the fall and winter getting to our favorite fishing holes and camp sites. Which is why the build is for what's near and for what we do, nothing was put on this TJ unnecessarily for show. I see too many "spotless Jeeps" with 33's - 38's. As long as you have good off road instincts and common sense, a modest, high quality build will allow you and your family to have a lot of fun! All in, I'm at $25k with my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn. And I can honestly say build wise, I'm done!! I might Raptor line it since the TJ has a few rough paint spots and won't ever have to worry about off road pinstriping again. The best part is, this TJ not only keeps up, but outperforms a lot of these $40k - $75k JK's & JL' s. Due in part to people's inexperience and just "over building". The '05 TJ has a modest build, yet is extremely capable, durable and best of all, affordable. I encourage any Jeeper to search for a rust free TJ 4.0 I6, preferably stock, 3.73's w/ LSD and a Dana 44. And to use my build as a "guide". But I highly recommend this build for anyone who is an adventurer, not a rock crawler. Best of all, it will eliminate you from chasing your tail, and the aftermarket will have one less "just empty every pocket" victim out there! It's the best of all worlds! One of my favorite mods was added a Banks cat back exhaust giving it a throaty growl, but not obnoxiously loud. Absolutely perfect for the 4.0 I6. Most importantly, be honest with yourself, build your TJ for what you will be using it for. And know YOU CAN do great trails and much more with just a 2" lift and 32" ko2's or MT's! DO NOT let the aftermarket pushers fool or shame you into thinking you "need" 33" - 40" tires and a 5" lift to wheel. That's 🦬💩! They know full well, once they get you at 33's, it's a freaking cash cow for them! Because you just embarked on their multi thousand dollar build conveyor belt. And it's 100% unnecessary for moderate wheelin'! Your axles, drive train, drive shafts, engine, gearing and a host of a lot of other stuff now "needs" to be upgraded. The aftermarket pushers feast on naive people. Don't be that guy! Like cereal companies saying breakfast is the most important meal of the day, the aftermarket will continue to take advantage of the misinformed. O|||||||O 🇺🇲 Only in a 2 Dr 🇺🇲 '41- '06
31s and the 2.5 is a great combo. You can go almost anywhere and you won't break parts. I like your trailer too. I have a little 6x4 that I drag around when needed.
referring to the gear ratio, most argue that the standard 3.73 should be replaced by 4.88 for 31s (i bought the TJ 97 2.5L with 31/15 and 3.73 - and the vehicle has a performance like a thirsty sloth)
I just downsized back to 31’s from monster 35’s. I just couldn’t do it anymore. The MPG, ride quality, and everything sucked with bigger tires. It’s so much better with smaller,
People in the comments always want to know what the "best" tire size or lift is for a Jeep. There is no "best" setup for all Jeeps. It's a matter of tailoring the setup of the Jeep for the intended type of use. 2.5" budget boost with 31's is great for street and forest service road use, though lift and tires are not the biggest game changer in terms of bang for buck- that would be traction aids, such as posi or lockers. My personal preference for up North is helical posi in the rear and locker up front. If you want to drastically improve your Jeeps capability, begin with axle work. If you don't have traction, all the lift and tires in the world won't matter. Clearance is great, but not super helpful if it just allows you to get into places you don't have the traction to get out of.
I got a stock Sahara 2014 with 18-in wheels I think that comes out to 255 70 18 which I believe is 32 I got 20 21 miles to the gallon plenty of power and I don't plan to raise it or anything I do very little off-roading but when I do it does just fine as long as it can clear. If I want to watch somebody do some serious off-roading I watch UA-cam and watch those guys tear their vehicle up haha
I have a 2.5l and going to a 31” tire made all the difference in the world. Runs so much better and always wants to go into 5th gear. Before that is was not even close to the same vehicle. It’s not made for those big tires if you need to ride on the road. I do like the looks of a bigger tire. But with a 2.5l, it’s not worth it imo.
@@johnquittenton2186 oh okay so you save gas with the 31s? What about power or acceleration difference can you tell if there is more power with and without a trailer? I am about to switch from 33s that's why i am asking
@@alexmozingo8972 hey, I prefer the 31s overall I think engine size makes a big difference along with gear ratio. I have the 2.5L with stock gears. The 4L would be better for 33s and towing. I find it’s easier to get up to speed and maintain it when towing a trailer with 31s on Jeep and trailer. Keep in mind my trailer empty is about 500 lbs. hope this helps
Hi. I have a 2.5L running on 31’s tires. With a 3”inch lift. Will it be okay to run 33’s tires on the 2.5 without having any issue? Or do I have to re-gear. Which I don’t want to do all that? Thanks.
You said that wear and tear on suspension and drive line components was important to you and an important reason for downsizing your tires. You overlooked the fact that using 1" spacers will increase all those wear and tear factors. Also the 1" spacers will increase the scrub radius from OEM by about 22 mm which is a lot and does have significant issues. Bolt on spacers become a stressed part unlike a slip on spacers. Using them your wheel is now attached to the spacer and not the oem studs. You are dependent on the integrity of the spacer and it's supplied bolts and not the oem wheel studs. There are lots of cheap bolt on spacers on e bay etc that you should NEVER even think about using. The bolts are not the proper strength and the material used for the spacer its self is low quality aluminum which can deform and therefore decrease the clamping force from the wheel leading to failure. Quality bolt on spacers that use the proper grade bolts and aluminum are available. They are considerably more expensive. My advise is don't use bolt on spacers and if you do buy from known manufactures and verify that the materials and parts are certified and marked with proper ratings. All things to consider
I'm I the only one that likes small tires on jeeps? 😅 Big tires on jeeps are VERY stupid if your in the city. Just keep 2 sets, off road and on road set of tires. 30inch is a much better drive quality I think, looks fine

great honest video from a real jeep owner!
Thanks for sharing, we are currently upgrading a similar jeep and the tires are next, your thoughts are helping on our decision.
I would have stayed with the 15' inch rims with more rubber then metal.
I have 30.5 in on my WJ and am getting 2 extra mpg on Hwy. makes a difference. Cheers
Can't wait to see more!
Helpful to watch, thank you. Currently running 31 MTs and they rub which is annoying. Looking forward to switching to 31 AT soon!
I run 31x10.5s komodos.. Run quiet. My gas milage is better then my other 2 cars i own. And i can crawl just about any trail i come across
Can you run the 31x10.50r15 tires on stock suspension?
Yes
Cant wait to see how much of Canada you see.

what tire size do u have
15 inch with 31's i prefer

Thanks!

Watch out putting 33 on a jk sport without doing upgrade to axles and king pins

If anything more gas. The larger wheels are unsprung weight and help keep momentum. I slow down fast when off the gas with the 31,s
