@JR oil first should be an always. Balm and butter are optional after that 👊
@JR I have a very old review of old money
After you’ve applied everything do u then brush the beard ? or do u brush step by step after adding the oil then brush then add the balm and brush ?
I love being able to come back to these videos Dan. It’s like a library for the bearded family. Thank you for all the time, effort, and sacrifice you put into these. Mad respect as always.
It is hard to watch the old ones lol but I am still proud
Agreed! Can I over oil or over butter while I’m figuring this out.
@@DanCBearded It's like having a beard dad by the way I got my dad to grow a beard out lol
@@eloygameno379 oh that is awesome!
Great explanation. Guess I need to wait 5 minutes now. Was applying balm right after the oil. Thanks teach.
Thank you brotha!
Yea I didnt know that I added that right after the oil. I also didnt know your supposed to use the balm/butter at night. I thought it was just for styling.
With butter on my beard at night I think my pillow cases will need to be washed more lol. Okay with me
@@ryanlogue7970 I am by no means an expert in beard maintenance, but I think that if you're drenching your pillow in beard butter to the extent of having to wash the pillow more frequently, you're probably applying too much butter to your beard.
Lol me too thanks for the heads up
Really good! Particularly the shield analogy and waiting 5 minutes. As I understand you, the non-oil ingredients in balms and butters make it impossible for oil to do anything much but sit on the surface and shine. Five minutes to absorb, followed by additional nourishing and sealing with balm or butter makes for a sound maintenance routine. I had not been waiting 5 minutes, but will now.
Exactly Leo, perfect breakdown! Thank you!
I’m a not time shower guy. I was only oil after the shower and before bed. Now I dry, oil, and then about 20 minutes later the butter goes in. Beard butter has been a life changer. Beard is super soft in the morning and feels great. Never would have known about it without your vids.
Man that is awesome to hear!

THANK YOU for having this channel. After 12 years in the Marines and shaving everyday, I now find myself with a beard but not one clue on how to take care of it, clean it, style it, etc. Lifesaver! I appreciate you!
Thank YOU for your service! Welcome to the channel 👊 always here to help
This was insanely helpful I have had my beard 3 years and was just trimming it down with an electric trimmer until recently now i want it to grow and look as good as yours.
Now that i have the Right information ill be able to care for my beard much better! Thank you so much!

Yap I was doing mine the way you did it .
First time viewer here. I thought to myself "here we go another dude running a UA-cam channel because he has a beard". I was wrong man. Solid information and well delivered. My beard looked healthy like yours and then crashed on me and my skin became really unhealthy.
I spent a year or more thinking I had a dandruff problem in the form of bacteria. Turns out my skin was just dry. My beard had gotten much longer and thicker causing sudden onset of dry and flaked skin. Finally started figuring out the importance of staying on top of hydration and I think this video will help me by getting some night time butter.
That's fantastic!! Welcome to the channel and I appreciate the comments!

Awesome man! Welcome to the channel and thanks for the feedback
Been holding out on trying beard butter, but finally giving in and ordering the Beard Octane neutral butta. The light, whipped texture sounds appealing and I am someone who hates scented products so I always go unscented. Definitely makes choosing/trying beard products a lot easier when you don't factor in scent at all! Hoping for positive results with the butter though. I have very sensitive skin especially on my face so I'm always hesitant to add new things into my regimen, but you've finally convinced me to give beard butter a shot. Thanks, Dan! Keep up the awesome videos.
That's awesome to hear!! Hopefully the 20% discount helped out 👊
Ur in for a treat brother 👌👌

@@DanCBearded Reporting back after using the Beard Octane butta... to be honest I don't notice much difference in how my beard feels to the touch or how dry my skin feels when I wake up in the morning, but I DEFINITELY can tell a difference after I shower that morning and start going through my normal routine. My comb glides right through and doesn't get caught up at all. Beard seems easier to tame after oiling as well. Was hoping it would help overall dryness feeling more, but still solid results and I'll probably continue to use it for a while longer and see if things change.
Wishing this channel came up when I would actually look for it on UA-cam. I got this awesome video in top searches on there.

Was disappointed in the appearance my beard was. I was actually adding balm then oil, because I liked how it looked, but the next day would be wirey and pointing everywhere. Applied how he says and my beard looks great and feels great. Definitely didnt know there was a correct way and a wrong way. Thnx for this video helped me out and saved my beard.

Awesome Daniel, welcome to the channel!
Nice video! My question is specific to Scotch Porter where they have beard serum and not beard oil. They say to use the serum after their balm. Thoughts?
Curtis Stahl I have scotch porter I use sometimes I go with DanC hit the serum first then the balm works the same and better..the serum is thick oil that is all ..might I suggest a deferent balm SP is more like a whipped butter . You can get an unscented balm if you wana stay w SP scent...hope this helps DanC chime in correct me if I’m wrong
I love the scotch porter wash and co-wash, but... I hate that process for them. I think they are flat out wrong for beard health. It will work for style, but not longevity
I personally like using coconut oil always cold pressed and started using a bit of Castor with coconut oil fresh after shower damp beard apply oil dress finish 5 minute wait then brush after under brush since beard is nicely spread out and kinda of thin seeming, apply butter. I feel it makes it easier to evenly spread through hair, then brush into style really just back down towards normal look. Then ill either brush into style or use hands to style. Has worked wonders for me I feel great usually get compliments at work not really while just out and about for some reason. And I seek the wind blowing through my beard for the wonderful smells to flow through my nose. One of the absolute best things about being outside.
Thanks for sharing man! And yes, the wind through the beard is special
Great info, Dan! I really like the shield analogy. Especially if the balm has beeswax, which most of them do...the oil would literally have no place to go. So lots of shine...but that’s about it. As far as butter goes, it’s totally made a difference for me..game changer!
Exactlyyyyyy! Thank you my friend 👊
Great video. I always do oil, and balm or butter . I use butter if I just cant tame my beard, but otherwise it’s oil then balm, and honest Amish at night. Thanks for the vid! Be well!
Thank you!!
Excellent process Dan, I absolutely agree. Also, you've inspired me to buy some beard butter (never used it before). I would like to use one of your affiliate links as well, which company would you recommend for a beard butter virgin?
Honest Amish Heavy Duty Balm,
Detroit Grooming Butter in Belle Idle,
Heroes & Legends Royal Butter
From my affiliate links in the description I would go with whichever of these sound more for you:
Beard octane = light and whipped
Detroit Grooming = heavy body

@@DanCBearded Hey thanks buddy! I'll definitely use your code. I'll educate myself on the difference between a heavy body butter and a lightly whipped one

Completely spot on brother!! I actually let the oil sit in my beard for a few minutes, and then I hit it with a little oil again before the balm because the hair has absorbed a good amount of the oil.

Great question! Apply butter like oil. Not trying to style but rather get the nutrition throughout the beard and skin. 👊

@@t_beardedstrickland3900 glad I could help!
@@DanCBearded if I may ask DanC, when the butter contains beeswax in the ingredient; do you still use the same process? If so, do you think their might be a chance of a side effect for a thick coarse beard in the long run?
I only have a 10min window to actually comb my beard after talking a shower while it's still damp using luxurious big wide wooden comb, P.S I do use a co wash daily :/ with that said, the idea of beeswax build up from the butter in the long run always prevent me from trying one, what's your thoughts brotha?
Started using B.O Downshift butta recently, pure awesomeness.. the trusted teacher recommendations on point 👌
Same process with beeswax yes, and no problem in the long run if the beeswax is all natural and fresh!
I love this video, I've been trying to preach this to my co workers for last 2 years. I'm 40 working with a bunch of 20 yr old coalminers that want that glorious beard, but don't wanna hydrate properly. So they end up wanting to shave because they feel like its too much work. For me it only adds maybe 10 extra mins per day taking care of my manhood on weekdays. Now weekends spent with the family I spend a lil more hair dryer time to look more appropriate for them. But only at most 15 minutes. Great video my brother, keep on keeping on.!
Absolutely agree! My time is at most 10 minutes and can be quicker when needed. I actually enjoy and look forward to that time, it's almost my stress relief. Loving the products so much helps too
Oil is king imo...All about keeping the hair and more importantly the skin nourished and hydrated.
Agreed! The two most important products would be oil and beard wash
@@DanCBearded Completely agree.
Five minute oil soak. U'mmm I have not been waiting that long before applying the balm. Great tip from the Trusted Teacher, which makes a lot of sense.

Hey man, I hope you're doing well! Just taking a trip down memory lane and visiting these old comments. So cool to see! Would love to see you say hello in a livestream!
Thank you for this video. I am entering into the world of beard products literally today. Until today, I have used a hair conditioner. One of the things I learned is that putting the conditioner on after one has washed and rinse the soap is virtually in effective. Apparently the hair is saturated and so not absorbing the conditioner. So, I let the beard dry completely. What I do is put on a good amount of conditioner on a completely dry beard and then sit down and read a book or watch something on TV working the conditioner into the beer for 30 to 45 minutes with one hand. Then rinse it out and towel dry it and comment neat. And the beard becomes almost silky smooth. This is not treating the skin, of course. But I found that using conditioner after washing it, on a wet beard, was a complete waste of money. And I found that putting the conditioner on for maybe five minutes was not long enough. I have a cousin, female, who said the same thing when I told her, that she leaves the conditioner on her hair for a long time.
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing
Glad to share what I can. Next time I comment, I will proofread my comment.🤪

Haha niiiice! I'm guessing it's all natural so you probably could. Oh jeez, I know I just started something for your style...
what kind of butter is that? Currently digging the live bearded butter
Thanks for clearing that up. While watching the video I found myself think, “But what if....”, and then you would answer in detail the very question. Thanks Dan C. I’ve grown my beard out a few times, but never really tried products. Basically just washed with regular shampoo (😲) combed it out and went about my day. I would blow dry it once in a while and even used a straightener. But was doing it all wrong (smoked it up from too high of heat). But this go round I’ve been taking it a bit more seriously, which has led me down some serious rabbit hole and increased my confusion more than my confidence. I’m about 4months in now. Your insights and videos have been a God send. Thanks again.

Haha how about ring finger?
@@DanCBearded as long as it aint the middle Im cool hahaha
My favourite. Balm.
Cool!
So I'm new to beard care and have been bopping around to the couple brands that offer free samples, made my first big purchase in the form of butter, but got more oils coming anyway.
A lot of what I've read early on is that you can apply oil to a dry beard post-shower and before bed (which is what I've been doing), and then apply balm in the morning (which I do to a point, sometimes I run out of time, sometimes I just forget, sometimes I'm going through oil quicker than balm, etc. and this is just little BadAssBeardCare trials). Anyway, have a sorta cheap boar's hair brush that I use, rub the oil in by hand, wipe hands off, brush well, sleep, wake up, brush again, and apply balm at some point after, then brush it through once more.
Now I'm going to a whipped butter from Royal Beardsman, and read up on that being a medium between straight up oil and straight up balm. If the one would replace both, would it be a decent idea to apply a little before bed and then a little more in the morning, or what? I do get showers daily due to living in the south, being fat, and sweating all day, and will use a bit of BABC beard wash when changing scents or if it was an exceptionally sweaty day.
Hey brotha. Oil is always, never replace oil for balm or butter. Oil in the morning, butter at night 👊 balm is for the day, if you want added stylng
@@DanCBearded Noted. Will have to wait for another paycheck though to get some matching scents in the oil department. That and the beard scrubber, that thing sounds like it's a pretty good tool.
As far as style goes, I'm round, so I don't really care for much styling, I do notice the balm helps a lot with wild hairs, so, that's the most amount of justification I'd have for it.
Thanks for the quick reply as well on an almost year old video, wasn't expecting that.

Happy new year Dan. I agree that oil is the key. My course, curly beard needs all the hydration it can get and I find oil is the only thing that really provides that. you’re absolutely right about letting it soak in for a few minutes too before applying any balm for style, it’s a crucial step. 👍
Such an important and overlooked step! No doubt
I only use butter and balm... Never use oil
Butter at night or after showers... Balm (styling) if I'm going out into town if not going anywhere just butter
I would urge the oil brotha! No judgement though, to each their own
I'm 3 months in Charging towards the goal of my VIKING BEARD😁.... This video is a god send.... Cheers mate 👍👍👍
Thank you! Keep growing 👊
Thank you Dan for this , just tries beard butter for the first time and man I am loving it
