Ureter and kidney issues are VERY common in male cats because of the narrow width of their urethra - I'm so glad he's starting to do better. I'm sure you already do this/talked to your vet about it, but a wet food diet, especially a *prescription wet food* will help minimize crystal build up in urine if you haven't made the change yet. (Edit: Not a professional, but I have a cat who's experienced two urinary blockages. If Artemy starts to lick his gooch a bit *too* much, squish his lower stomach and check for any hardness. Catching blockages like this early could save his life going down the line if you choose not to get the surgery.) Edit 2: Surgery for urethral widening fixes one problem and adds another. Most vets advocate for not getting surgery in the last few years due to data showing the increased risk of kidney and bladder infection. Not getting the surgery IS the ideal option here, even if it means more due diligence with monitoring.
Yeah, Royal Canin Urinary SO (with vet prescription) is what I feed my dog (she just turned 13 years old) who has had bladder stones herself too (she had surgery to remove them when she was around 2 years old). I think Royal Canin makes cat food too.
@@arcturionblade1077 Aww, old puppy. I wish her well! The royal canin food is what my vet had prescribed to my double-piss-blocked-boy! The whole reason he got the second one is because the prescription dry food still caused too much build up, so :( yeah.... he's a wet food andy now.
Would like to add that perscription foods can be very bland and some cats/dogs don’t like them so doing either the wet food or mixing the dry food with warm water or if your vet approves, a broth, might make it more appealing.
@@ciani2396 Ideally, for cats, you shouldn't be feeding them dry food at all if you can afford it - hence why I said "prescription WET food." Dry food is a lot of the reason urine crystals are as bad of a problem as they are - most if not all hydration for cats comes from the food they eat. They don't have the same drive to drink water that dogs do and that makes it incredibly rough on their kidneys over time. Even if female cats don't have as many issues with blockages, kidney issues are very common in both sexes of cat. Males usually just reach blockage first or as a consequence of kidney issues. But! You are right that if you *must* use dry food, those are better ways to make it more palatable to your pet. From my personal experience with my cat, I'd say it is way too risky to use just dry prescription food - it's not enough to stop an eventual blockage. I'd even go as far as to say a good wet food does more than a dry prescription food.
I had no idea about this and I have a male cat. But I think he doesn’t have as much of a problem with peeing due to his young age and he eats wet food 2 times a day. It’s terrifying that this could happen regardless of what I do.
Of course race to tell us last about Artemy. Your partner, your family, and your friends matter more to tell first before any of us. Like I wrote on Bluesky I’m so thrilled he’s okay and hopefully he will make a good recovery. Take all the time you need with Artemy
We here at the Yōkan Preservation Movement are glad to see that the benevolent grace of the Great Kidney God Yōkan has intervened on Artemy's behalf. Glory to his body of Soy. Merry Christmas!
As someone who has lost two beloved cats in the last two years, I'm really happy that your cat has recovered, and I hope you enjoy many more years together.
Artemy is such a good boy and I'm glad he's okay. I hope he stays healthy for a long, long time. I'm a pet father of a Chiweenie and five cats, so stories like this always tug at my heartstrings.
I have a super old cat who was diagnosed with stage 2 kidney disease a couple years ago. The following year he got his annual bloodwork and he no longer had the markers for kidney disease. His kidneys completely recovered which his vet had never seen before. He is 21 years old and his name is Nosfurcatu
Genuinely glad to hear this! I have been lurking for a while because I appreciate your perspective. When I heard about the emergency vet visit it really hit home with me. My calico Trixie had an emergency visit 3 weeks ago. She lost a lot of weight in just a month despite eating plenty. Then 3 weeks ago she started having emergency diarrhea wherever she happened to be standing at the time. Turns out she had a bladder and bowl infection, and has seriously elevated thyroid function. She is doing better but not bouncing back like Artemy has. Hope he comes home soon, I know all to well how anxiety inducing it is when they are at the vet. They are not autonomous decorations you keep around the house, they are an extension of the family.
I lost one of my kitties last month. She had heart failure that wasn't detected until it was too late. It makes me really happy to hear your little guy is doing better. Merry Christmas AND ALSO Happy Holidays ya nub.
Orange kitties are the best, my wife and I just lost ours to cancer. She was telling me about Artemy, and we'd been hoping for good news on it. I hope Artemy has many healthy years left
It's really nice to get some good news after all the crap that has been happening around the whole world I hope that the kitty gets better soon and Merry Christmas
Ironically, I just picked up my kitten from the emergency vet. My vet thought he had a intestinal blockage, but after the ultrasound it appears that he was already puked out whatever it was that bothered him and he's going to be 100% ok. But he's 9 months old, not an older cat like Artemy. It's really stressful to have a sick pet.
Good things still happen. Things can still change for the better. And if things can still change for the better, we can still fight to make them change. I'm very happy Artemy pulled through, Vaush.
cats have especially sensitive kidneys. As he heals i strongly recommend you feed him creatine-reduced wet cat food, it'll be much easier on him. These specifically exist for cats with kidney issues, and can be found at any petshop. Dont feed dry food to cats, unless its a one-off Always wet food, make sure their water is running like those small water fountains.
I'm legit glad your cat has no stones! I hope and pray (I know, I know) that the doctors will get your cat's level of kidney disease to be close to zero so he won't suffer in silence and in time, can play with Rubin and Pigeon. I would not have imagined what you, Vermin, and Conure have gone through during this time, but I'm happy that you're happy that Artemy is gonna be alive for a couple of years more. I know you all are gonna take good care of him! Merry Christmas!
I’m very glad he is doing better, I’m looking at getting my own cats after Christmas and Artemy doing much better makes me feel really good. Thanks for the update Vaush!
Our little cat "Bro" had this same thing happen to him, he was only about a year old when it happened. We had his ureter stretched and changed his diet, and bottled water only. He is much better now. I'm glad your cat is ok, hoping for a full recovery and good response to lifestyle changes.
Merry Christmas! Glad to hear that Artemy is continuing to improve! I've had kitties with the kidney problems; mileages vary, but you are having a good run with him. He's our mascot!
BLESSED KITTY ARTEMY! I've had several bouts with kidney stones and it is no walk in the park for us humans, either. Merriest of Xmases to the entire Vaush team.

I know the feeling, my dog lost it's battle with pancreatitis this year, seems so long ago now. Also had diabetes. He lived far longer than the vets expected, several years longer, so I feel quite lucky.
Kidney stones are rough regardless of the species. I had to pass 3 by like 20 because I drank far too many energy drinks and far too little water. Now I drink at least three or more bottles a day and a large cup of chamomile tea before I sleep, I just turned 30 not too long ago and I haven't had a stone since.
I've had a few cats in my life. I know how hard it is to have a deathly cat. One I had narrowly survived kidney stones like artemy. Which was thankful since we don't have the means to have the kind of surgery you could have done on him. He had a similar miraculous remission. So eager to see him back on the streams and do take your time. Remember the lessons from your trip to Europe, irl first !

It's easier to grind partially frozen meat. Chicken, beef, whatever. Assembly is quick with either plastic wrapped little patties or tiny Tupperware. Chuck them in the freezer. Fridge overnight to thaw, or a few hours before feeding. Don't cook! the bone meal can scratch their insides instead of digesting. Once you get used to the process it's easy peasy. Way cheaper than canned food. The amazing bonus is less waste, literally, less poop, less odor, results in less litter use. It feels ridiculous to buy expensive packages of meat for cats but we figured out that we actually saved money. The glossy coat thing was real. I wish I had done it for previous cats. 🐅
