    Whose idea was it to use badly animated 2d figures as an explanation for the different jumps? You can't see what's going on around the feet at all and if that wasn't enough the Axel is displayed straight up wrong. You can see that even the animator got confused on the Axel jump and mixed up the left and right leg. I highly recommend watching the video with Jason Brown by Wall Street Journal instead.

    Still look the same. How can you tell quickly which is which when watching on TV?

    • @katcankan7129
      @katcankan7129 6 років тому +2

      YouSuckYuck Very funny but not always! Furthermore l want to know before the it is announced 😀

    • @lauramic100
      @lauramic100 6 років тому +79

      So, If you want to tell before the announcer tells you (or not, because sometimes they don't say anything), there are a few things to look out for. First. Is he going into it facing forward? There is only ONE jump facing forwards and that is the Axel. Done, you have five to go :D Next question. You see the jump. Did the Skater help himself with the toe pick? Like, did he ram his other foot into the ice to launch himself? No? Then it was an Edge Jump (Loop, Salchow, Axel, too, but you can already recognize the Axel ;D). So, did the skater 'cross' his legs before jumping? One foot in front of the other? Yes? Then it was a loop. Was the stance really wide and open? No crossing of legs to be seen? Yes? Then it was an Salchow.
      You did see how the Toepick was used? Alright, most of skaters land on the right foot, so let's go with that for the next explanation. Did the skater ram the toepick of the LEFT foot into the ice? So... skating backwards on right and landing on right? Then it was a Toe-loop.
      The next two are really tricky. Flip and Lutz.
      So, you see the skater skate on the left foot and use his right toe pick, landing on the right... now you have to watch out . Did the Skater lean onto the outside of his skate? The so called outside edge? Then it was a Lutz.
      Did the skater lean on the inside of his skate? Then it was a Flip.
      I would recommend to watch a lot of clips on UA-cam and slow them down to really watch what foot is used. I myself found it easier for male skaters because their boots are black, so you can see them better on the white ice.
      I used this flow-chart for learning: 68.media.tumblr.com/8ada0acfabc10fb0bf6a02a4e3367e71/tumblr_inline_ors4nhoTN01slyotu_540.png
      It's practically what I just tried to explain.
      And the last comment... practice... a lot :D I STILL don't always get Flip and Lutz, sometimes the skater is so FAST, I'm just not fast enough to really SEE on what edge they are on. But the edge jumps are pretty easy once you figure out the starting form of forward facing, X-shape of legs, open legs :D
      Hope I could help :D

    so the point is:
    There are 2 types of jump= toe and edge
    Toe jump (jump that needs toe kick)
    1. Toe loop: kick with left foot, inside edge
    2. Flip: kick with right foot, inside edge
    3. Lutz: kick with right foot, outside edge
    Edge jump (no toe assist)
    1. Salchow: the foot is making /\ shape
    2. Loop: the foot is making X shape
    3. Axel: juts a regular jump but this is the only jump that the skater moving forward (except axel, the other jump is moving backward)

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 3 роки тому +1

      If you prefer to land on your left leg instead of your right, your left is the strongest leg. In other words, you are a "lefty". Therefore you will rotate clockwise instead of counter-clockwise and your edge take off or toe pick take off will be opposite of what is illustrated in this video.

    I'm a figure skater and the Sal actually starts off with either a forward outside three looping your foot, closed Mohawk then looping your foot, or back outside three then looping your foot,
    For the loop you got the edges right just you start with two feet on the ground left in front of right if your a righty skater. then for the axle it was actually a left forward outside not right for. Out. In other words you made it a lefty skater turning righty.

    The front/back view for the axel jump launch is quite confusing...like the "camera" went to the back of the skater but the shoelaces were shown? What?

    This seems to be confusing and the axel is taking off on the wrong foot, assuming this is a "cartoon" skater that rotates counterclockwise. There are more videos with better jump identification explanations than this one, people.

    How the heck do judges notice the difference between all these at high speed? I can barely tell the difference with it being spelled out in diagrams.

    • @adlaaq
      @adlaaq 6 років тому

      Cameron Metrejean the judges know what the skater will do before they actually do it. every skater hands to them a written program before the competition, with all the jumps (in order), spins and step sequences. the announcers usually have the written program for all skaters too, that's why sometimes they say "next is a ... jump"... hope i helped you a little bit 😅

    • @qiqisongs
      @qiqisongs 6 років тому

      Cameron Metrejean The judges already know what jump the skater will do next. But many skaters make mistake eg. by doing a loop instead of a planned flip or doing a flip instead of a planned lutz. Many judges would turn a blind eye to that and award the skaters the score for the flip/lutz which has higher base value. This is what commonly happen to Shoma Uno and Evgenia Medvedeva. ;)

    The angle that they use didn't help at all to recognize the differences, and the motions are too stiff too. The Salchow, Loop and the Axel are actually very easy to tell apart, so is the Toe Loop. The only difficult ones are Lutz and Flips. I wish they've used a better angle, and real jumps from skaters would help too.

      lily rocco This is not a good guide. I learn the jump by watching good jumper like Yuzuru Hanyu. He has textbook technique so it is a good idea to watch his jumps. I would advise you not to watch Shoma Uno or Evgenia Medvedeva's jumps to learn the jump types because they are famous for using wrong edge to take off and underrotating their jumps. The commentator would say, next is the triple lutz but they would be doing a triple flutz instead.

    I think that producer tried to show the side of edges on the left of the screen for all 6 jumps. It look fine for me accept for axle jump because after the turn, the right foot is suppose to be the free-leg. Anyway, if you understand that the axel jump taking off from forward outside edge, it is fine. Some coach teach skaters to take off from inside edge to get a half rotation for free, by this way they have to pre-rotate the jump to inside edge then take off. it is a cheating jump.Judge will downgrade this kind of jump.
