Solfege (also called solfeggio, sol-fa, solfa, solfeo) is a musical education technique for ear training skills. Steven Baker (www.stevenbakermusic.com/) pianist with the Rainer Hersch Orkestra, is a virtuoso solfegietto (we just made that word up because there kind of isn't one). Whatever, here you can enjoy his amazing talent. This performance took place at Cadogan Hall, London as part of the Rainer Hersch Orkestra's 'New Year's Eve Bash 2019'. Tickets for the 2020 NYE Bash are on sale here cadoganhall.com/whats-on/rain...

As a French native speaker, singing in do-ré-mi-fa-sol-la-si-do is all natural, as it's basically singing the names of the notes. I assume it's more difficult for someone who uses a C-D-E-F-G-A-H/B-C system. Also I've heard that germanic countries use relative solmisation, instead of latin and slavic countries who have absolute solmisation. My solfège teacher, who is an amazing teacher, told me that relative solmisation develops a good relative ear.

OMG Fabulous! Conductor Nello Santi (who sadly passed away in February) was also mind blowingly fast with solfegge.

Solmisation was developed by Zoltán Kodály as part of the Kodály method. Proud Hungarian is here. We learn solmisation starting in kindergarden and all the way through our education, so if you stop a stranger on the street and ask him to solmise a song it's not impossible that he succeeds..

Brilliant! I've tried singing solfege for warmups, and it's a pain in the butt. And this guy just made it look like child's play!

When I did music A-Level (21 years ago!) we had a substitute teacher try to show us how to do this, together with specific hand positions. Unfortunately, I think she only covered for about three weeks, so it wasn't covered in enough detail for it to sink in. This was fascinating!

This is the kind of thing my first year ear training teacher expected us to do! Of course, we failed miserably

I would need to practice this to be able to do it so fast, but solfège is still how I work out new songs I am learning. Here in Hungary kids are taught the Kodály method. I still remember Bach's Menuet in G-minor, even if I'd be waken up from my sleep: so do re mi fa so do do la fa so la ti do' do do, etc. It was well, almost half a century ago 😊
