Isaac, I'm glad you're not leaving UA-cam. I have sort of the opposite problem as you. I have the time and money I just don't have the energy to do it all myself (I want to raise fiber goats) and finding reliable help that wants to make money around me in my little pocket of Missouri has been surprisingly difficult. I'm glad you're keeping an eye on your current limitations. Life changes and successful people adapt!

It seems like they have stayed high for the last 2 years! I don’t see a huge future in it unless someone can get in with a dairy with hundreds of calves in a season and can get them at a discounted price.
@@FarmandHammer Back in the late 50's a neighbor in his teens bought bottle calves from a man who went to MN and brought them back and sold them for $7 each. He bought quite a few and put some out on shares. At that time if the dairy farmer got $3 it was better than hitting them in the head to get rid of them. About 8 years ago, you could still buy them for $50 here in WA State until the price of beef went up.
The neighbor and I lived in southern ND.
We started with bottle calves which is good for the exercise and lots of long days. We switched to low products daily cows and running 4 calves on each . Free up a great deal of time. Which got us onto more projects.
When I was getting my herd started I had bottle calves too, ironically enough, also for 3 years. Once I hit enough beef cows/heifers it didn't pay to keep bottle calves around, makes sense to keep more of your own heifers.
You made the right choice.
I've always been jealous of the amount of concrete you have! Quite the setup you have there.
It's sad to see that you aren't continuing with bottle calves, but as a finance major in school I understand there are better investments for you to be making for the farm. Excited for the future!

Be sure to get high health status sheep and build up a closed flock. Have you thought about Dorper sheep. They have an excellent conformation. Will be happy to watch your videos whenever you get the time to post them.
I’ve had a small flock of Katarina and some with a little dormer. They’ve been great!

Never apologize for growing. The bottle calf enterprise does sound interesting. I wonder if a 13 year old could handle such a challenge with the help of her little brother and sisters. We do have a "hamburger herd" of retired dairy girls, aside from our regular beef production, but we're getting them for .45-.50 per pound. With some reforming, they put out some great burger and tavern steaks.

Good luck with your future ventures! If you do go into sheep, Sandi and Sheepishly.Me is great for honest real life of raising sheep. She raises indoors due to coyotes in her area. Her only regret I think when she started was that she didn’t get a better quality breed of sheep that had no disease issues. She’s been breeding trouble ewes out of her flock, but it takes awhile. Just a suggestion to start with the best quality you can afford right off the top. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you. good luck?👍👍👍🐄🐑
I’ve been watching Sandi’s videos practically since she started! Big fan! But yes, I would be doing things differently than her. I’d be raising them outdoors and would have hair sheep breeds rather than wool. I’m hoping to get ewes from a reputable breeder near me and a ram from Greg Judy. But we will have to wait and see. Thanks for the advice!!

I can't recommend Katahdins enough. I wish I could keep growing my flock exponentially, but I'm running out of new pastures to stock.

I don't know if you it over their but here in Australia we adopt up to six ccalves a time.on cows more if they have milk and once five or so months we do the same again instead of bottle or bucket feeding
You started our right with bottle babies. You have to get your foot in the door to grow your one cloed heard or get diversified. I opened the door to profits with raising meat chickens. A fast return on the investment, 12 weeks from chx to slaughter to sale.
Could you please tell us how you calculate that having a beef cow-calf operation will be more profitable? Hair sheep will be a lot more profitable, because of their efficiency being so much higher, along with great selling prices

We run cattle and Katahdin sheep. We plan on decreasing our cow herd and plan on increasing our ewe flock up to 300.
What are “bottle calves”?
So what you're trying to say is that you need a full time job which today is a 60 hour a week job in order to support your bad farming habit. Focus on the job. Get that pension and Social Security locked up because you'll be old before you know it and what you're trying to do here will get you there even faster.

Awesome video both breeds of sheep you mentioned are awesome just put the best dorper ram you can afford on them at least buy your second lamb season I started out whith full blood of both them breeds you mentioned ewes and built my ewe herd up the second year I used a dorper ram and haven't looked back since always using dorper ram on kat st Croix and % dorper ewes the Lamb's grow faster thus cost less money to feed with the dorper put it this way the dorper is like you guys using the Hereford bulls on you black cows they just complement each other the kat and the st Croix ahead better but the dorper influence equal growth so they both component each other on hair sheading and grown making awesome F1 and F2 females for breeding when putting legs of lamb and chops on the grown fast out the ram lambs ..
St Croix are kind like the diary of the hair sheep the ewes don't look like much but put a dorper ram on them they will when better looking lambs and produce nice F1 ewes to build your herd we get st Croix here an avg 50 -100 cheaper at market and just worm and hoof bath the ewes and age them and we tsake 2-5% back to auction and the rest we run on fire danger grazing project's and run a dorper ram on them we could do the same with goats but goats cost more if a coyote eats one or someone steals one its a bigger loss so if we have any goats we keep them close to home

I not so sure if I would sell out altogether . It is nice if you diversified . That way you are not all in with just one thing.
Just selling out the half dairy heifers. I’ll still be in the cow calf business and will be adding sheep this year to diversify a bit. Of course there is fescue seed season right around the corner as well.
@@FarmandHammer i still think I would think long and hard about that because now you will need to sheer them. There is no way out of that. With feeder you just need to feed them or good pasture. 🤠🤠🤠🤠

Try Dorpers for hair sheep, they work great for us.
All the dorpers I've ever had have fallen out of the flock after a season. Probably just the lines in my area.

When this small jag of heifer's get old anough you should run your nabors bull on them make a small jag of eysey calving minis be good for UA-cam video likes and keeping your channel monitised ..but def get you a small jag of hair ewes don't buy know tho buy hay know and buy in the drought I did that this got 5 ewes to add to my herd avg 85 each price sold one for 100 the next day for meat the others 4 I got 7 live healthy lambs from then I got to keep the ewe Lamb's and sell the rams at 2 +$ a lbs and sell them same ewes for 125 vs the 85 dollar investment

No more pigs for this year (freezers are full of pork). But we are planning on getting quite a few spring 2022 to raise and sell. Some new animals I’ll be getting this year are sheep.
