    Russian-born rapper Oxxxymiron sat down with VladTV and explained how hip-hop has taken off in Russia over the past couple of years thanks to UA-cam and social media, and he revealed that he recently played to a crowd of over 20,000 people in Moscow.
    During the conversation, Oxxxymiron shared his thoughts on embracing his culture with his music but also paying respect to the foundation of hip-hop. When asked about Lord Jamar's views on white rappers being guests in the house of hip-hop, Oxxxymiron says he both agrees and disagrees. To hear more, hit the above clip.

    I can imagine that rap hits culturally in Russia because a lot of the social conditions that Rap was birthed from exist out there, I can dig it.

      For sure mate, but mostly rapers in Russia are trying to pay attention on political things too carefully or they just ignore it.

      That's a definitely a big part of it, but as a Russian, I can't even stress enough just how on point Oxxxy was when he was saying that Russian language is all about word-play and sophisticated ways of self-expression through language. This taps back into the roots of modern Russian language, which you can find in classical Russian literature. That's also the reason why Eminem has always been insanely popular in Russia, this is the kind of verse that Russian people can really appreciate.

    • @denisolsem8418

      CokeBoiiMontana Russia is a country of many different cultures and nationalities. On a legal level, everyone has equal constitutional rights, and no one is oppressed. On a personal level, yes, there's definitely more discrimination happening than in the States. However, I don't think it has anything to do with the system, but probably with the fact that the idea of tolerance does not permeate the society as it does in the states; and that has its own reasons, among which religion plays a part; Russian Orthodox church is not as tolerant of other faith, as Catholic church is. It is a matter of time though before it spreads, and young people today are certainly more tolerant than their parents are. However, I wouldn't say that "non-white" are seen as inferior by 95% Russians or by the government. There's no conscious oppression going on. And by the way, some rappers in Russia are Muslim too. My very first favorite Russian band as a kid was Muslim, I loved their track Паутина Власти, which is about oppression of all people by those in power. BTW, Chechens practice fundamentalist Islam, and some even radical Islamism, and they are anything but oppressed, to say the least.

    • @denisolsem8418
      @denisolsem8418 6 років тому

      CokeBoiiMontana you might be right, you obviously know more about living there. And yes, I don't personally get why the first Chechen war happened in the first place. I really think we should have let you guys get independence. Personally, I don't have a problem with Chechen people, don't get me wrong, I only have a problem with Kadyrov's government (and Putin's too, for that matter). They don't care about Russian constitution, and Russian government lets them do whatever the hell they want. Then the whole world talks about how Russian government is an accomplice in persecution of gay people. As a Russian citizen, it affects me directly, and I hate that.

    • @denisolsem8418
      @denisolsem8418 6 років тому

      I think what an average Russian wants is to be able to feed their family and be confident in their future. And they don't give a shit about Chechnya, or Ukraine, or US or anyone else. Similarly, an average American, or an average Ukrainian wants stability for themselves and don't care if the government that promises them stability bombs the hell out of some distant country. People are the same everywhere. They don't give a shit, unfortunately. I can only hope that one day US and Russian imperialism will go away, and let others live in peace.

    Why is it so controversial to say that hip-hop is black culture yet nobody questions the fact that Muay Thai is Thai culture, anime is Japanese culture, Lucha Libre is Mexican culture, etc.?

    • @MyHandle302
      @MyHandle302 6 років тому +8

      Peter Fowler Black People will never win our genres over in comment sections; we have to take it and control by force. No one but us understands that whites who own the massive industry erase the black people who started the genres from history.

    • @peterfowler4723
      @peterfowler4723 6 років тому +5

      scroll through the comments and you'll see people saying "hiphop has no color" "music is music." minimizing the influence black people have made to their own art forms is nothing new. back in the day a white guy named nick larocca claimed he invented jazz; nowadays the black origins of rock and house music are all but forgotten, so I can't blame people for being protective and not wanting hip-hop to go down the same path.

      Becuase Thai is not a race, it's a nationality. Same for japanese/mexican people. Hip-Hop is a culture of African-Americans from a particular area. Black guy from Paris has nothing to do with hiphop. At the same time, puerto rican from Bronx is a key figure in hip hop history.

    Music should stand above the concepts of nationalities and skin color, it should unite people and not create new racist problems. We don't make society better with speaking of segregation in art and saying that only one kind of people can use a genre. Friendship, interaction and respect can't co-exist with such questions as "who is allowed to make rap: black or white, men or women?"

    That was a great interview. Although I speak no Russian or Slavic, I can hear in the language that it would lend itself very well to Hip-Hop. The Slavic language is very mixed and evolved as early Russians expanded through the Steppe and conquered more people, and as those people took up the Slavic language, they influenced it. These ethnic groups to this day exist in and around Russia, making it a much more diverse country than we (as Americans) tend to think of when we think of Russia. Since before the 1600's, Russians have been colonizing the people around them, and in that process colonized a large part of the "Middle East" and large parts of Central & East Asia as well. In that process, Russia, ceased to be the "Great White Blanket" that Americans are used to imagining it being. Russian Nazis and White Supremacists never get respect in those circles because they are seen as being "tainted" by all of their Asian and Middle Eastern blood, but all that really shows is how retarded those kinds of "supremacist" groups are. Russia is a much more diverse and interesting country than we are taught here in the U.S. That to me is the real tragedy of our lack of historical knowledge. Thankfully, platforms like this help spread awareness about how much more the world has to offer, not just musically, but in every other way.

    My opinion. Lord Jamar is right. The very foundation of hip hop was to express the black experience in the USA. particularly New York City. Thats always going to be its soul. But i understand that hip hop has transcended color and culture. Its more than just color now. But all Lord Jamar is saying is respect its roots. I do think white people are "guest" in the house of hip hop but not like Jamar stated.... more like how Oxy said it. They are foriegn to the roots of hip hop. Its so many sub genres that it really has touched every culture and i think thats dope. I hope the culture grows more but never forget its roots

All these rappers dont struggle they just get locked up and rap about the same bullshit. They werent born into a struggle they chose it.

    I think some people in hip hop want to avoid what happened with Rock and Roll where you have Elvis proclaimed as King when LIL Richard and Chuck Berry were its "Architect" and "Father". But Black Music has kept growing and evolving and changing and has always dictated where American music will go next. Our biggest problem has been the same people who have supported our music, buisness wise, have also ripped us off and help destroy the lives of people who invent that music. But the "mother" 'and "father" of all American music is Gospel music and the Blues..everything after, and even Country music to a degree, derived from those two forms of Black Music.
