Ive had a very similar experience, I also turned 18 in a behavioral health facility after a non bipolar manic episode. I cannot ever imagine why anyone would put themselves through that. After that I was admitted for three months and I'm still not and will never be the same. Internet fame and clout chasing is a plague.
Some people don't take sleep as serious as they should and some just don't recognize how much sleep can affect your health , physically and mentally, it can affect your skin and hair , nails , teeth. It's amazing how much getting enough regular sleep can help keep you healthy.

Either way, it's definitely a "final project before graduation" kind of deal. ETA: I just looked it up, and her degree was in nursing. I'm currently in nursing school myself, and we don't write theses for undergrad nursing degrees. Sometimes if you are in a Bachelor's degree program, you will have a few paper heavy classes that focus on things like quality, legal issues, healthcare disparities, etc, but even the final paper in those classes is not a thesis, it's like a 5-7 page deal. (Mine took me 90 minutes to write, citations, editing and everything, and I got an A.)

The longest I've gone without sleep is 2-3 days, and I would always start having hallucinations when that happened. It's nothing to mess around with that's for sure.

My husband was in the military. He was severely sleep deprived for two weeks it caused him to have a mental breakdown and develop a form of schizophrenia. Sleep deprivation is not a fucking joke and it’s not something to aspire to. 6 years later he still struggles daily with his mental health. Sleep is good.
Was that as a result of an incident or part of training? IDK what branch but I've heard of restrictions on how much sleep they're allowed to deprive you of in order to prevent injury. I'd imagine 2 weeks is far above that.

It wasn’t being sleep deprived for two weeks that caused him to develop schizophrenia and still suffer from it 6 years later. It might have been the trigger, maybe, but there were other factors at play, and still are. I know you’re gonna tell me to mind my own business, that I don’t know him, and you would be right. I’m not trying to be mean or judgmental. I’m just saying those two weeks are not responsible. Either something else happened, or he had a strong predisposition to being a schizophrenic, or both. The record that guy broke for consecutive hours awake is dangerous. It can kill you, and even if you don't die it can severely damage your brain. I have chronic severe insomnia, and used to be unable to sleep for days in my teens. It's not fun, you can start hallucinating, and hearing and seeing things that aren't real, even entering a waking dream state. After you finally get sleep it doesn't just fix everything because you have long term effects too. I have a lot of memory issues from years of this.

I was a pill addict for 10 years. The last 2 years, I started branching out as my addiction was getting expensive and there was barely enough stuff around to keep me going. M*th was one of those "I would never" substances until, eventually, I did. I binged it a few times towards the end of my addiction. I would go days without sleeping, crash, do it again. I'm over a year in recovery and sobriety now and my sleep is still messed up. If you have even an inkling of being a night owl or insomniac prior to doing things like that or doing record-breaking stunts without any type of proper preparation for your health, you will spend years trying to recover. I have slight memory problems from it - minor, annoying ones that aren't serious or life-ruining by any means, but a sharp mind was made a bit duller by the choices I made.

Not sleeping for a long time can definitely permanently impact your sleep and energy. Or at least have long term affects. I couldn't sleep for more than 20 minutes for around 2 months because of extreme tooth pain. Even after getting my teeth fixed over a year later my sleep patterns are still horrible. I wake up after about 4 hours of sleep constantly and I always feel tired. Don't take your sleep for granted

The IOC willfully ignoring all the evidence given to them is downright racist. There was a similar situation in 2004 when Paul Hamm, a white athlete, got to keep his medal despite a judging error being discovered after the fact because the IOC said the appeal from the Korean federation after the event was finished. I do not understand why the same standard is not being applied here. All three athletes involved - Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, Ana Barbosu, and Jordan Chiles - have been affected by judging errors that were not their fault, and so they should each receive a bronze medal - again, see the 2002 pairs skating scandal for precedent - and both the US and Romanian gymnastics feds advocated for this solution. It's the IOC digging their heads in the sand here.

I saw a highschooler posting his schedule on the r/school subreddit showing he gets four hours on school nights, and then "makes it up" on weekends -- not possible; if you have a sleep deficit you need to make it up in no more than three days or suffer a variety of chronic symptoms, with some of the most common absolutely impacting ability to study. School needs to start after 9am everywhere, not just in rich states.

I still have problems with sleep patterns and my memory is fucked, but at least I don't stay up for days on end. Point being, get professional help as soon as possible if you don't sleep at least 6 hours within a 24 hour period. Once your brain gets malnourished, it will never recover.
ADHD meds make it too easy, but after a couple of days even the meds can't mask the weirdness caused by the sleep deprivation. To anyone else who may need to hear it - even if _you_ don't feel tired, your brain certainly does.

As a St. Lucian, I've never been so damn nationalistic in my life when we won our first Medals this Olympics. Seeing our flag on even some metric about us rated highly in Medals per capita is absolutely insane and has me screaming. Having a small Island nation winning a gold medal in the Olympics against the US against all these other nations with massive populations and money is absolutely insane. It is just the best.

As someone who suffers from severe insomnia, I don't know why anybody would want that world record. I don't know why anybody would want to force insomnia upon themselves. The longest I've gone without sleeping was about 10 days but I did have I think about 2 20 minute naps somewhere in there. My brain hasn't been functioning since. My memory is all messed up. I'm so glad I already graduated from college because I honestly don't think I'd be able to do it. That is such a stupid move and I don't know how you can fully recover from something like that.
The unfortunate truth when it comes to the internet is that people will do just about anything to get their name out there, no matter how life-threatening it is. Hell, just a few days ago one of the most popular streamers for younger audiences livestreamed himself jumping over sportscars driving at him at insane speeds, which could very well end in paralyzation if not worse.

I've always seen the Olympics as a "points" system. Gold is 3, Silver is 2, Bronze is 1. I think it's the most fair way to judge a country's overall placement. Like imagine the only sports were the 100m, 200m, and 400m dash. If the US got a Gold medal in the 100m dash, but then not a single medal in any other races I'd maintain that the US did not "win" if another country got Silver in the 200m dash, and bronze in the others. It makes the most logical sense in my mind. That said, I really just don't give a fuck about the Olympics.

As someone who suffered a stroke at 38yo, I can not stress enough how essential Sleep is to health. In the week leading up to the stroke (hereditary heart condition), I did not sleep for nearly 90+ hours, which I was told triggered the hereditary condition I now know I have. However even so, all 12 Doctors that looked after me during my rehabilitation said, that anyone, regardless of pre-existing conditions or age, would have likely suffered some form of vascular/blood vessel condition for not sleeping that long. Sleep Health is absolutely essential for over-all health. DO NOT FUCK WITH IT!

Concerning the racist tweets. I can't speak for anyone and everyone's story is different. But The influence of those around you when you are young is significant. Part of my journey is facing the areas where I have let racism creep in and address it directly. Guilt and shame are powerful and our egos can make us want to believe the best of ourselves and shy away but until we look ourselves honestly in the mirror, we CANNOT improve. ALL that being said, the way it happens is insidious. You don't SIMPLY hear an adult or parent or uncle or sibling say Mexicans are lesser humans and run with it. From the other side It seems SO CRYSTAL Clear about Zimmerman, but I was at a turning point during that event and I at the time was told by people I believed in that Zimmerman was attacked by a "thug" criminal gangster and he was just protecting himself and that the liberal media faked footage about it.... etc etc etc.. It wasn't until some months later when I started researching police violence and dug in deep down that rabbit hole that I started to realize how much of it was lies meant to sow hatred and fear. The messaging is meant to offend your sense of justice and then using that wedge plant seeds of fear, and hatred. It's frame as a sense of injustice and it grows. That is why there is always SUCH a sense of victimhood in the Far right narratives. That messaging is meant for the ignorant and isolated. To indoctrinate them into a world view built on fear and hate. I lived in that world for many years and I got out. I repeated and said and thought many things I am not proud of. Which Is why I believe in the ability for people to grow and change. I have also never been under such spotlight and pressure around my past. I had the luxury to process in anonymity. But I'm not afraid to talk about it. I think people like me speaking up and sharing the story of change is IMPORTANT. that you are not imprisoned by your past self. I still have some unswept corners of racism somewhere. I have no doubt. I do have the framework NOW though to examine those thoughts when they come up and know them for what they are. It's easy to swing the other way. Because the reactions and processes you develop living in contention transfer. Wishing harm to Maga supporters. filling yourself with FEAR and Hatred for those that don't follow your views. It's EASY to fall into that. It takes a concerted effort to lift yourself above that. When I was on my first nuclear deterrent patrol in the Navy I was put on a schedule of 48 hours up, 6 hours down, and those 6 hours were during drills that I had to participate in. For 67 days I was averaging 2-3 hours of broken sleep every 2 days plus what few quick naps I could sneak in. I was home for less than a month before being sent back to sea and doing it all over again for 72 days. The reason I was given was after that second patrol, my boat was going into the shipyard for refueling and they wanted me to finish my quals before getting sent to my next boat. It fucked me up. Ended up getting medically discharged for severe insomnia. It took years to get my sleep under control.
You know for all the actual problems Kick has that they refused to do anything about, drawing the line at “staying awake long enough to give yourself serious brain damage” was not something I expected. Kudos to them for doing the bare minimum.

On the Brooke story, I had a similar experience when I went to college. While I never had any racist beliefs, I grew up in a conservative family and even voted for Romney when I was 18. My dad was such a good debater and had an answer for everything, so I assumed he was right. Then I went to college and met people who were patient with me and gradually broke down those beliefs. I've done around 80-90 hours awake before while in an altered state of mind. By the end of it I had VERY nearly lost my sanity and I had to be sedated in the hospital because after that amount of time it was almost like my body had forgotten how to sleep. I can't even imagine voluntarily putting my body through that. That memory is the reason I don't take illegal substances or even caffeine these days.
As a person with serious insomnia and other mental disorders it is actually insane to me that someone would want to do that to themselves. I've been up for just barely 7 days before and it was literally horrible.

The stats for olympics really shine a light on the fact that economics and standard of living have WAY more to do with it than population. Places like France, Australia, US, UK, Netherlands at the top. While Mexico, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Egypt, Phillipenes, China and at the very bottom is India. Number of people isn't what matters, what matters is people having the resources to participate in all these random sports from a young age and put their life on hold to pursue them, also government support. A kid from india or Mexico has very little chance to get into high level badminton, gymnastics, sharpshooting, archery, canoeing, fencing. The ability to try and become the best in the world at one of those things is a result of "privledge" and the more privledged people a country has is more important that pure number of people.

Ive had a very similar experience, I also turned 18 in a behavioral health facility after a non bipolar manic episode. I cannot ever imagine why anyone would put themselves through that. After that I was admitted for three months and I'm still not and will never be the same. Internet fame and clout chasing is a plague.
Some people don't take sleep as serious as they should and some just don't recognize how much sleep can affect your health , physically and mentally, it can affect your skin and hair , nails , teeth. It's amazing how much getting enough regular sleep can help keep you healthy.

ETA: I just looked it up, and her degree was in nursing. I'm currently in nursing school myself, and we don't write theses for undergrad nursing degrees. Sometimes if you are in a Bachelor's degree program, you will have a few paper heavy classes that focus on things like quality, legal issues, healthcare disparities, etc, but even the final paper in those classes is not a thesis, it's like a 5-7 page deal. (Mine took me 90 minutes to write, citations, editing and everything, and I got an A.)

My husband was in the military. He was severely sleep deprived for two weeks it caused him to have a mental breakdown and develop a form of schizophrenia. Sleep deprivation is not a fucking joke and it’s not something to aspire to. 6 years later he still struggles daily with his mental health. Sleep is good.

Was that as a result of an incident or part of training? IDK what branch but I've heard of restrictions on how much sleep they're allowed to deprive you of in order to prevent injury. I'd imagine 2 weeks is far above that.

It wasn’t being sleep deprived for two weeks that caused him to develop schizophrenia and still suffer from it 6 years later. It might have been the trigger, maybe, but there were other factors at play, and still are. I know you’re gonna tell me to mind my own business, that I don’t know him, and you would be right. I’m not trying to be mean or judgmental. I’m just saying those two weeks are not responsible. Either something else happened, or he had a strong predisposition to being a schizophrenic, or both. Sleep deprivation was not the issue and believing it was probably didn’t help his recovery. Good luck to you. I mean that.

The record that guy broke for consecutive hours awake is dangerous. It can kill you, and even if you don't die it can severely damage your brain. I have chronic severe insomnia, and used to be unable to sleep for days in my teens. It's not fun, you can start hallucinating, and hearing and seeing things that aren't real, even entering a waking dream state. After you finally get sleep it doesn't just fix everything because you have long term effects too. I have a lot of memory issues from years of this.

I was a pill addict for 10 years. The last 2 years, I started branching out as my addiction was getting expensive and there was barely enough stuff around to keep me going. M*th was one of those "I would never" substances until, eventually, I did. I binged it a few times towards the end of my addiction. I would go days without sleeping, crash, do it again. I'm over a year in recovery and sobriety now and my sleep is still messed up. If you have even an inkling of being a night owl or insomniac prior to doing things like that or doing record-breaking stunts without any type of proper preparation for your health, you will spend years trying to recover. I have slight memory problems from it - minor, annoying ones that aren't serious or life-ruining by any means, but a sharp mind was made a bit duller by the choices I made.

Not sleeping for a long time can definitely permanently impact your sleep and energy. Or at least have long term affects. I couldn't sleep for more than 20 minutes for around 2 months because of extreme tooth pain. Even after getting my teeth fixed over a year later my sleep patterns are still horrible. I wake up after about 4 hours of sleep constantly and I always feel tired. Don't take your sleep for granted

The IOC willfully ignoring all the evidence given to them is downright racist. There was a similar situation in 2004 when Paul Hamm, a white athlete, got to keep his medal despite a judging error being discovered after the fact because the IOC said the appeal from the Korean federation after the event was finished. I do not understand why the same standard is not being applied here. All three athletes involved - Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, Ana Barbosu, and Jordan Chiles - have been affected by judging errors that were not their fault, and so they should each receive a bronze medal - again, see the 2002 pairs skating scandal for precedent - and both the US and Romanian gymnastics feds advocated for this solution. It's the IOC digging their heads in the sand here.

I saw a highschooler posting his schedule on the r/school subreddit showing he gets four hours on school nights, and then "makes it up" on weekends -- not possible; if you have a sleep deficit you need to make it up in no more than three days or suffer a variety of chronic symptoms, with some of the most common absolutely impacting ability to study. School needs to start after 9am everywhere, not just in rich states.

Point being, get professional help as soon as possible if you don't sleep at least 6 hours within a 24 hour period. Once your brain gets malnourished, it will never recover.
ADHD meds make it too easy, but after a couple of days even the meds can't mask the weirdness caused by the sleep deprivation.
To anyone else who may need to hear it - even if _you_ don't feel tired, your brain certainly does.

Seeing our flag on even some metric about us rated highly in Medals per capita is absolutely insane and has me screaming. As someone who suffers from severe insomnia, I don't know why anybody would want that world record. I don't know why anybody would want to force insomnia upon themselves. The longest I've gone without sleeping was about 10 days but I did have I think about 2 20 minute naps somewhere in there. My brain hasn't been functioning since. My memory is all messed up. I'm so glad I already graduated from college because I honestly don't think I'd be able to do it. That is such a stupid move and I don't know how you can fully recover from something like that.
The unfortunate truth when it comes to the internet is that people will do just about anything to get their name out there, no matter how life-threatening it is.
Hell, just a few days ago one of the most popular streamers for younger audiences livestreamed himself jumping over sportscars driving at him at insane speeds, which could very well end in paralyzation if not worse.
I had chronic insomnia for 5 years before finally healing and yeah I think my worst was 2 nights fully awake so almost 72 hours awake. And THAT was torturous enough. I had a miserable existence half the time. Honestly watching someone do that to themselves is a little triggering.

Heavy on the memory problems. I had a few similar experiences of varying numbers of days (due to m3th and other substances I was using in the latter years of my addiciton) and even over a year and some months into sobriety, my memory blinks sometimes. I feel like I'm on top of things, then suddenly I remember something I was meant to do 2 weeks ago. It's strange, but I tell myself I can't forget something I didn't remember in the first place... lol.

I've always seen the Olympics as a "points" system. Gold is 3, Silver is 2, Bronze is 1. I think it's the most fair way to judge a country's overall placement. Like imagine the only sports were the 100m, 200m, and 400m dash. If the US got a Gold medal in the 100m dash, but then not a single medal in any other races I'd maintain that the US did not "win" if another country got Silver in the 200m dash, and bronze in the others. It makes the most logical sense in my mind.

As someone who suffered a stroke at 38yo, I can not stress enough how essential Sleep is to health. In the week leading up to the stroke (hereditary heart condition), I did not sleep for nearly 90+ hours, which I was told triggered the hereditary condition I now know I have. However even so, all 12 Doctors that looked after me during my rehabilitation said, that anyone, regardless of pre-existing conditions or age, would have likely suffered some form of vascular/blood vessel condition for not sleeping that long.
Sleep Health is absolutely essential for over-all health.

Concerning the racist tweets. I can't speak for anyone and everyone's story is different. But The influence of those around you when you are young is significant. Part of my journey is facing the areas where I have let racism creep in and address it directly. Guilt and shame are powerful and our egos can make us want to believe the best of ourselves and shy away but until we look ourselves honestly in the mirror, we CANNOT improve. ALL that being said, the way it happens is insidious. You don't SIMPLY hear an adult or parent or uncle or sibling say Mexicans are lesser humans and run with it. From the other side It seems SO CRYSTAL Clear about Zimmerman, but I was at a turning point during that event and I at the time was told by people I believed in that Zimmerman was attacked by a "thug" criminal gangster and he was just protecting himself and that the liberal media faked footage about it.... etc etc etc.. It wasn't until some months later when I started researching police violence and dug in deep down that rabbit hole that I started to realize how much of it was lies meant to sow hatred and fear. The messaging is meant to offend your sense of justice and then using that wedge plant seeds of fear, and hatred. It's frame as a sense of injustice and it grows. That is why there is always SUCH a sense of victimhood in the Far right narratives. That messaging is meant for the ignorant and isolated. To indoctrinate them into a world view built on fear and hate. I lived in that world for many years and I got out. I repeated and said and thought many things I am not proud of. Which Is why I believe in the ability for people to grow and change. I have also never been under such spotlight and pressure around my past. I had the luxury to process in anonymity. But I'm not afraid to talk about it. I think people like me speaking up and sharing the story of change is IMPORTANT. that you are not imprisoned by your past self. I still have some unswept corners of racism somewhere. I have no doubt. I do have the framework NOW though to examine those thoughts when they come up and know them for what they are. It's easy to swing the other way. Because the reactions and processes you develop living in contention transfer. Wishing harm to Maga supporters. filling yourself with FEAR and Hatred for those that don't follow your views. It's EASY to fall into that. It takes a concerted effort to lift yourself above that. When it comes to outrage, I try to focus on the actions not the person. That is to say, if they did something racist, I will confront them on DOING something racist as opposed to calling them A Racist. If they double down, then they might be a racist. Coming at them so hard makes it easy on them anyways. Give them room. Same as giving them rope. Room to improve or Rope to Choke.
MY Solution: National Day of Social Media Spring Cleaning. - Where you go through all your old posts and delete anything that you no longer feel represents you anymore. Specifically you make it public. Say "Here is a post from 2009 where I tell people to speak American" - This is racist. I no longer condone this and I am purging it from my Socials, throwing it ceremonially into the Toxic Burn Pit.

When I was on my first nuclear deterrent patrol in the Navy I was put on a schedule of 48 hours up, 6 hours down, and those 6 hours were during drills that I had to participate in. For 67 days I was averaging 2-3 hours of broken sleep every 2 days plus what few quick naps I could sneak in. I was home for less than a month before being sent back to sea and doing it all over again for 72 days. The reason I was given was after that second patrol, my boat was going into the shipyard for refueling and they wanted me to finish my quals before getting sent to my next boat. It fucked me up. Ended up getting medically discharged for severe insomnia. It took years to get my sleep under control.

On the Brooke story, I had a similar experience when I went to college. While I never had any racist beliefs, I grew up in a conservative family and even voted for Romney when I was 18. My dad was such a good debater and had an answer for everything, so I assumed he was right. Then I went to college and met people who were patient with me and gradually broke down those beliefs. I went from Romney voter to full on Berniecrat inthe span of maybe 2 years.

22:00 it takes a little physics to know that reflections are all based on the angle you view the surface and what angle the surface is to your POV. The airplane is not straight to the crowd, the rear is further away than the nose. So any reflections will be shown to the "right" of the crowd, from the POV of the camera.
I've done around 80-90 hours awake before while in an altered state of mind.
By the end of it I had VERY nearly lost my sanity and I had to be sedated in the hospital because after that amount of time it was almost like my body had forgotten how to sleep.

As a person with serious insomnia and other mental disorders it is actually insane to me that someone would want to do that to themselves. I've been up for just barely 7 days before and it was literally horrible.
I think Dr. Matthew Walker, the sleep scientist, would have something to say about that UA-camr’s sleepless record. It’s wildly dangerous and doesn’t just risk long term injury but also death as that’s the end result of long term sleeplessness if it goes long enough.
