Can Am XMR 850 Shock Spring Swap

  • Anyone that owns a 2016 XMR will know that the springs on the shocks suck! The shocks are decent but BRP skimped on the springs for some reason! The machine bottoms out all the time and the rear end sags...meaning you have to crank up the preload big time and therefore the ride is stiff and not much suspension left to appreciate the Fox Shock! Swapping them out with XMR 650 springs seems to solve that problem!

    Those stock springs looked like regular size springs from the XT models. Big difference with the new ones you purchased. Good DIY video for the XMR boys.

    Well I came here to see if I needed a spring compressor (didn't look like I did) to change out the front spring on my wifes X mr 850, same year as yours. The Fox Podium actually blew a seal. Anyway I just ordered the springs from PZ for a grand total of $150. The price came down. She carries the cooler. The BEER cooler lol.

    Good video Rob, you do a good job of explaining but not over explaining everything. Man it pisses me off when the Compaies do little things to "save cost" lets be honest, the difference in price of your 850 springs vs a 650 Can not be THAT much..... Good little upgrade though, keep the videos coming ! Oh and I picked up some Dielectric grease the other day for my electrical connections haha

    • @RobFarrowATV
      @RobFarrowATV  7 років тому

      LOL! Glad you got the grease! Thanks for commenting and watching! Yeah, as long as there's no major issues with cheaper stuff they put on, it will stay that way unfortunately but I guess it brings the cost down a bit to what they think is reasonable! LOL!

    • @Maritimer
      @Maritimer 7 років тому

      "reasonable" lol Thats like my new Grizzly, the rear storage box is so stupid, it's not water resistant or even dust resistant at all, I can see into it when the door is closed ! haha So Im trying to find some weather stripping with double sided tape I can put around it to try and make it at least dust proof lol

    • @RobFarrowATV
      @RobFarrowATV  7 років тому

      LOL! Yeah, that would be a pretty useless storage box if not sealed! The XMR one is not too bad but does get water in it when you go deep!

    Getting podiums Friday and getting them powder coated red prior to putting them on. Hopefully these newer ones will have better springs? Mine isn't an XMR, 2017 can am outlander 850 XT, so I have less weight. We'll see..... gotta still be better than the factory junk! only 700miles on the wheeler.

    • @RobFarrowATV
      @RobFarrowATV  2 роки тому

      I'm not sure how the parts match up for the 570, you'd have to look up the part numbers on the BRP page and see if they're the same or different. The 650 had beefier springs and shitty shocks, the 850 was the opposite so it worked out. You need to make sure they aren't the same springs and shocks, otherwise you'll need a better shock all together. Good Luck. can-am-shop.brp.com/off-road/ca/en/shop/sales/parts/

    • @RobFarrowATV

      The shock is not as good on the 650, so they put heavier springs on it, whereas the shock on the 850 is good but they put smaller springs on it! Thanks for watching!

    Great vid Rob, Would've like 2 have seen both measurements of b4 n after with wheels on. Either way though very visible results but the terrain will let u know 4 sure. Were the 650 spring the same as the 850 springs 4 2017? The $ was a decent price to. Thx 4 a great diy and 4 sharing.

    • @RobFarrowATV
      @RobFarrowATV  7 років тому

      Yeah, forgot to do the before measurement for the video. I did measure the rear and it was 35", now it's 36.5" with much less preload and way more useable shock! I think the 2016 650 springs are the same as the 2017 but they didn't have a number for them on the site! Yeah, have yet to test them out...soon! Thanks for watching Darryl!

    That’s great! But how did it perform? Are they crazy stiff like the new factory xmr? I’m contemplating buying an 850 XMR, or the 850 XTP. I was in the dealership the other day and by random chance they had an exam are the rear suspension was crank down so tight that you could barely get it to move a half inch

    • @RobFarrowATV
      @RobFarrowATV  3 роки тому +1

      They are fairly stiff still but a lot more travel on the shock while still lifting the rear to where it was supposed to be.

    For 2 years ive been wondering why i spent extra money on a xxc to handle the way it does and now i know why! Wow. Sad. But now im happy to know hopefully if i replace springs the rest of the shock is quality. Would you agree? Im also wondering if theres other options, like maybe a dual rated spring?

    • @RobFarrowATV
      @RobFarrowATV  5 років тому

      I think its a decent shock, just the springs are lacking big time...seems to bring the shock to life with the spring upgrade and you'll have more preload adjustment after also! Don't know if the Dual Rated spring will work on the '16 or not. Thanks for tuning in Steve!

    Hi, great info, I have a 2016 Outlander XMR 1000R and want to improve the suspension. Did you do also do the front with the XMR 650 springs? (part number 706202576) My assumption is if I am doing the back, might as well do the front, not to mention my front is bottoming out on whooped out trails pretty noticeably.

    • @RobFarrowATV
      @RobFarrowATV  4 роки тому

      Thanks Bill! I didn't do the fronts cause they still had enough adjustment on them...little soft but I can live with that! Ya, You should look at the beefier springs on the fronts if you're doing whoops, should help! Good Luck!

    • @RobFarrowATV

      The 1000 springs are like the 850 springs, the shock is good and the springs suck. The shock on the 650 is poor and the spring is better. I matched up the good spring and the good shock. Good luck with your machine Dave!
