Larry didn't give a damn about your skin color he just wanted to beat you no matter who you were. When he was growing up he wanted to play the best in his area and that was the men of color and they let him play with them. Considering the part of Indiana he grew up in on top of all of that. Victor Vettese Still have to give a slight nod to Bird. Clearly Jordan was a far superior athlete and could dominate games, often as a one man wrecking crew. But Bird was a much better shooter, better free throw percentage, better passer, and a better rebounder. Going back to college Bird led the unknown Indiana State Sycamores to an undefeated season, falling 1 game short of a national championship to a far superior Magic Johnson led Mich State. Jordan was a very good college player, but you can’t even begin to compare NC ,with the abundance of talent they had , to IS, a program that basically fell off the map after Bird left. Yes, Jordan was better lockdown defensive player, but Bird still averaged almost 2 steals a game. Yes Jordan does have more championships but looking at clutch performances, that’s a toss up. I guess in the end it like saying Coke is better than Pepsi because although there are plenty of objective measurements to rank players, the overwhelming factor on deciding who’s best is always going to be subjective

      >Jordan is miles ahead in steals, blocks, and finishing around the rim. >Bird's jump shooting is better at 3 and long range. Jordan's mid range jumper ia on another level. He has a hangtime jumper, a turnaround jumper, a fade away, a pull up jumper, and a lean forward jumper. Jordan's hit jumpers from everywhere. While Bird's jump shooting is heavily done from long ranges. It's hard to call Bird a better jump shooter.
      >Then there's this universal gap on man to man defense. Even most of Bird's rebounds were offensive rebounds.
It's hard to call Bird more all around than Jordan. His versatility is on the offensive end. Jordan does damn near everything.

Broke his eye socket, came back and finished the game. Broke his jaw, came back and finished the game. There was never any quit in Larry Bird. He played his heart and soul out until that final buzzer. If he lost it was just INCENTIVE for the next time. And the scary thing is one summer just before he entered the NBA he broke his wrist playing baseball with some friends and he said he never shot the ball as well after that injury. So all that NBA footage, that was Larry not being able to shoot the ball as well as he did before. :-o The man was amazing. Pure legend.

John Oxenham personally I think MJ is the GOAT, but there is one part of the game that Bird had easily over MJ and that was the mental side - especially on offence. MJ could break down defences himself like nobody’s business but Bird could read defences and his own offence at the same time. He knew where the defenders were going before they got there and he knew where he team mates were going before they lifted a foot off the court.

Michael Jordan May be the de facto “Best Player Ever”, but an All Time Team without Larry Bird on it would be a joke. Part of his appeal is how awkward and un-intimidating he appears, but he has the competitiveness of an assassin, and he plays the game with an unmatched fluidity.

    • @porkfrog2785
      @porkfrog2785 4 роки тому +1

'Awkward'? I dunno, but a true 6'9" with long arms not intimidating? Reggie Miller's first time on the court with him, he said he was shocked at how big he was. He was a 3 way threat, meaning he could shoot, pass, and had handles. He had the league average in speed and hops pre-twin Achilles surgeries. He really only lacked quick feet, but because of the triple threat, still broke ankles as the vid shows. You play up tight, he fakes and dribbles around you. You play off, he shoots over you, double team--you really didn't want to do that. Because of versatility, his fakes were super effective.[as one player put it, playing him was like 'being caught between a fart and a shit] He was the most intimidating player for years. No one wanted to guard him. Worthy said he'd rather guard Jordan because of Bird's mind games. He was so ruthless he is the only guy who ever caused Dr J to throw hands. Bird is the most misunderstood player ever. Not trying to start shit, btw. Just never remember him NOT seeming intimidating[I remember the Cowens Celtic titles] I hated the Celtics and Bird when he played, like everyone else whose team was in the East [Cavs]. Now, for many reasons, fav player. It's like when a boxer hugs a guy just beat the shit out of him when it's over...the Celtics also made for some boring games because they'd make the game feel over before it started, believed in building big leads and slowing it down, controlling those boards

Lebron is promoted as the greater ever.

      MLB does not do that.
If you replaced MJ with Wilt as in put MJ in Wilt's time and Wilt in MJ's time we would be saying Wilt is the greatest.
Also he would have beem the most known Basketball player in the world.
MJ would be considered a great and the goat SG still probably.
But guys would make up crap like MJ played in the weak 60s and 70s eras.

You should React to Magic Johnson so you could see why He's at Larry's retirement. Their rivalry helped make the NBA what it is today. They also palyed their college Championship game against each other.

Courtney, your facial reaction at about 3:25 of the video was PRICELESS. After Bill Walton declared that in one game probably in late 1985 or 1986, Larry told his Boston Celtics teammates, "I am going to play this one (a game) left-handed." And then he DID!!! I was born and raised in a Boston suburb. Have been a Celtics fan my entire life ... and I am ancient. 73 years old.
Larry Bird and another Celtic player, Bill Russell, who played from 1956 through 1969, were PHENOMENAL.
Someone once declared, and I completely agree with what was said, is that a true superstar is one who makes his teammates better. Both of them and a BOATLOAD of other Celtics players did exactly that.

Ive been a Laker fan since I was a little kid in the late 70's, remember the 80's so fondly. Magic was my guy, hated the Celtics and Bird. Bird and Magic were always compared because they were the 2 best in the 80's, they had the basketball IQ and were step ahead of everyone else. To me Magic was better, no doubt right? Well I was biased, Bird and Magic were very similar, they could score, pass and rebound and will their team to a Win, but Bird had a distinct advantage, he could shoot from anywhere on the floor, pretty much like no other, he was a killer, and to me, he is right up there with MJ for best ever, probably now my favorite non Laker

I'm so happy I was alive to witness his greatness, because as Magic said, there will never be another Larry Bird.
