  • In this gadget and gizmo-heavy Season Two opener, Geoff and Steve return to their top-secret Alpha Site, but this time they are bringing a new secret weapon that is bright orange and weighs 900 pounds. During a research and development visit to Orange County Choppers in New York, they help the "American Chopper" team design a monster meteorite hunting motorcycle, which is later delivered to them in Kansas by Paul Senior. With the help of the new off-road bike and a massive experimental metal detector, the guys follow the historic Santa Fe trail and uncover a gemstone-laden monster space rock that dwarfs their previous Alpha finds.
    TRIVIA
    In the spirit of the classic "Marvel Team-Up" comic books, Executive Producer Christo Doyle came up with the idea of an "American Chopper" / "Meteorite Men" crossover episode. In addition to Paul Senior of Orange County Choppers guesting on "Meteorite Men," Geoff and Steve also guest-starred in an episode of his "American Chopper" show, which was named "Meteorite Men Bike." The motorcylce was painted orange to match the Science Channel logo. Geoff had been an enthusiastic dirt biker in his teens, but took an advanced motorcycle class with Harley-Davidson, just before filming, in order get to grips with the heavyweight motorcycle.
    The friendly argument between the MM regarding what would become of the massive meteorite found on this episode - Steve wanted to melt it down for gemstones while Geoff wanted to preserve it in a museum - continued for many years. For the first five years, the meteorite was on display at the Kansas Cosmosphere musuem. It was eventually acquired by Geoff's company, Aerolite Meteorites, Inc., and is has been the centerpiece of free exhibits at numerous gem shows and museums where it was been enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of visitors.

      I dont miss how slow they are
      They work about 90 minutes a day actually looking for a meteorite
      There could be bigger meteorite 100' from this rock and there not even going to look.
      There could be 1000 pounder under the fence and they can't conceive of how to look for it.
      This area needed to be completely covered by professionals. In a cooler time of year

    Is there a possibility that a meteorite will have microorganisms that are from other planets?

    • @GeoffNotkin
      @GeoffNotkin  3 роки тому +3

      Hello Jesser! Excellent question. There is a meteorite that was found in Antarctica -- ALH 84001 -- that some scientists believe contains a fossilized bacterium. Other disagree. If we suppose that there is life elsewhere (and I do believe that) I suppose it's possible that primitive life could hitch a ride. However, consider the long time a potential meteorite might spend in the extreme cold of space, combined with the intense heat it would experience during flight through our atmosphere. You'd have to be a hardy life form to survive all that, but I would have to say such a thing might be possible. Thank you for writing and if you'd like to learn more about meteorites, you may enjoy my website --> aerolite.org/
      Cheers from here -- Geoff

    I found a 4foot diameter round "rock" with flaking layers of iron. It sits on White Rock Mountain. While excavating I found a layer of squared white sandstone. Each stone had a border of a dark clay stain.
    It seems to me that it is a meteorite that shattered the white sandstone seam. I-64, Hartsrun ,WV to Draft road . Past state park and turn right to W.R.Mountain. about half way up, on left side of road where excavation was made to procure road material.

    • @GeoffNotkin

      Good note! We actually nearly always did test and calibrate detectors on existing meteorites. Especially in Sweden where we were using a very deep-seeking detector. It wouldn't have worked in Kansas because of the size of the detector we had, but I think in quite a few others you can see us testing the detectors on samples we already had. It hasn't been to a lab yet because of this covid crap, but I found in an area of glacial terminal moraine, a cylindrical bluish 355 pound completely see thro crystal rock that a magnet will slap onto it. the surface looks melted off in one direction, the front end looks like it has a circle of extra melt area that flowed down the body and the tail also has a circular markings like what ever was melting, didnt make it that far. I took a grinder to it on an area an inch square and polished the grind , lo and behold I could see several inches into it under my poor garage lighting. does this sound like a meteorite to you guys or am I silly holding onto it ? Oh it also has a nasty sooty smell to it when wet.

      Hi Lorne! Interesting you should ask that. After this episode was completed, we gave the giant meteorite on loan to the wonderful Kansas Cosmosphere for five years -- I suppose, in a way to suspend the argument 😉 I am VERY pleased to say that, after the five years were up, I was able to preserve this magnificent meteorite, whole. It has been publicly exhibited at the Tucson gem and mineral shows -- where it was seen by several hundred thousand people -- and we hope it will one day have a permanent place in a museum exhibit. One thing I can tell you for sure, is it will NOT be melted down for gemstones 😉
