  • In the exciting Season Three opener Steve and Geoff go big when they embark on a summer expedition to a country neither of them have visited before -- Poland -- though Geoff does claim to be an expert in pierogis. The guys explore the spectacular and scenic 5,000 year-old Morasko Crater Field in western Poland, which is hidden within a lush forest.
    The very first Morasko meteorite was discovered by accident, by a German WWI soldier digging a trench and many more were found afterwards, but the entire area is now a preserve. With a three-day hunting permit from the local university and a brand new top-of-the-line metal detector, the guys must sift through the buried wreckage of World War I, World War II, and the Napoleonic War if they are to find a record-breaking iron meteorite that may still lie buried deep underground.
    Also in this episode: Geoff is enthralled by a bird's nest and is amazed to discover that Steve may have a metal plate in his head!

    EPISODE TRIVIA:
    Geoff of MM is a very enthusiastic amateur military historian. He was utterly fascinated that the crater field encompassed a battlefield from three different major conflicts. When he wasn't digging for meteorites, he was exploring the remnants of trenches and gun emplacements, still clearly visible within the Polish forest.
    The Meteorite Men's metal detectors kept reporting targets which didn't adhere to their powerful field magnets and were extremely difficult to locate. They turned out to be Napoleonic War lead bullets which had oxidized and taken on the color of the soil in which they had been buried for so long.

    I really wish Discovery would produce this series as a DVD/Blu-Ray box set! Only thing I would enjoy more is to have new episodes. I own them all on iTunes, but would much prefer physical disc copies.

      Nine years isn't SO long ago, surely? At least it doesn't seem that way to me. Thank you for watching. I may have mellowed out a bit (just a very small bit) since then, but it's pretty difficult not to get mad when you're on the road with Steve for three solid years 😉

    Thanks for going to Sweden, as I bought one of your cut pieces of the Muonionalusta 1540g I did an etching and it turned out great.
    Wow, big background day huh. Hide the craft table.

      Well ... thank YOU for supporting our work! I love the Muonionalusta meteorite. It has such a unique history -- being transported and altered by Ice Age glaciers -- and, of course, a magnificent etch pattern. I hope you enjoy that piece for many years.

      Why, thank you kindly! May I therefore please recommend a few things to you.
      We DO have a blog on my flagship site, Aerolite.org and you can find that here:
      aerolite.org/blog/
      If you'd like to learn more about the trade, I recommend my book, "How to Find Treasure from Space," which is an updated version of "Meteorite Hunting," which won an IPPY Award as one of the best science books of the year. 154 pages of expert info, photos, diagrams, and lots of exclusive photos from "Meteorite Men."
      aerolite.org/shop/meteorite-books/
      My memoir, "Rock Star" is also avaialble there.
      AND ... you may enjoy this new feature-length documentary which I hosted and produced, just last year, about meteorite identification, and it's available pay-per-view and/or download on Vimeo. This was filmed on location in the Sahara and Arizona, and in the lab:
      vimeo.com/ondemand/meteoriteidentification
      If the new ID video is well received, I plan to do more, so please let me know. And DO please check out our new short film series about meteorite hunting, "Fireball Steve," which is also here on my channel. Steve is the host and I directed.
      Thanks so much for the inspiring comment! Cheers 😁

    Awesome! I’m the first one! Would love to see you guys check out Czechoslovakia, to the site where the moldavites originated from the crash of a meteorite millions of years ago. I love your show 💕

    • @GeoffNotkin
      @GeoffNotkin  3 роки тому +3

      Gosh, it's SO interesting you mentioned this. I am friends with a legal miner of moldavites in the Czech Republic and he invited us to go and film there with him. I've always been extremely interersted in moldavites and I pitched that episodes idea every year, but --- sinced the show was "Meteorite Men" -- the network wasn't overly interested, unfortunately, in an episode that was all about impactites. Maybe one day.

    Morasko Meteorite Nature Reserve
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morasko_Meteorite_Nature_Reserve
    In October 2012, a meteorite weighing about 300 kg was recovered from a depth of 2.1 m.

    • @GeoffNotkin
      @GeoffNotkin  3 роки тому +1

      Correct. That was about six months to a year after our expedition. An accomplished local hunter received permission to hunt the approximate same area and used similar (or maybe even the same) equipment as us, and he beat our record. At the time of filming, our Morasko find was the second largest meteorite ever recovered in Poland and also the deepest. Thank you for watching.

      It really was! People often say to me: "Hey Geoff, why didn't you just stay and find more meteorites?" And the answer was usually that we were scheduled to go immediately to another country and do another episode. 160,000 miles of travel all in. The "drama" in getting that Morasko meteorite out of the mud was very real and even the Polish crew helped us dig. Thanks so much for watching!
