South FL actually had a good size grunge rock scene in the early 90s. Even gothic rock bands like Marilyn Manson and Jack Off Jill came from Fort Lauderdale. Miami had a pretty decent hardcore rock scene in the late 90s/early 00s. Tampa had a huge death metal scene in the 90s. Jacksonville had a nu metal scene in the early 00s. Don't know if it's still there but it's interesting to hear of all the hard rock music Florida has produced.

As you said, everything north of I-4 feels like South Georgia or South Alabama. Gainesville doesn't feel like Florida the way Daytona, Orlando, Tampa, Ft. Myers, Naples, Sarasota, Melbourne, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, the Keys, etc. all do.
I hope Yk south fl and north fl is different from each other and yes Ik Daytona and Orlando isn’t south fl but you’re naming cities that are in different scene and I’m from palm beach but I stay in Gainesville

I was born in Tallahassee and moved to Gainesville when I was in 6th grade and stayed there until I graduated high school. Both offer basically the same outside the colleges there but each also has a few pluses over the other in certain areas so what your preference is will determine which is right for you. Gainesville is progressing and modernizing while Tallahassee is keeping the historical look and feel. I would have a tough choice between the two still myself because both have been positive influences on my life growing up. But the bottom line I tell everyone is, no matter where you move to it always is what YOU make of it.
I've visited Gainesville back in the late 90s and obviously it has grown alot since then but it's still a place I'd love to go back and visit 😊 I stayed in Starke at the time 😊

You drove along the most commercialized areas of Gainesville, bypassing the old architecture and charm predating the generic style typical fast-food lanes and the more industrial view of the University of Florida, from the commercialized zone. You should have taken a right at University and gone down the older roads to get a real feel of what Gainesville is, opposed to typical sprawling fast-food and generic Target shopping mall stuff. That's why you said it looked "like Miami".
Gainesville is pretty much liberal democratic, i am a boomer at 66 years old, if your 38, your not old. back to Gainesville, it's a college town. GO GATORS! so it's a fun town, lot's to do, and there are a lot of pretty girls, and women (girls being college age) women being your age and older. Gainesville and Ocala get along just fine.

If you turn left on Butler Boulevard off Archer road you would find everything from Bass Pro Shops to Sam's Club. When your turned on 24 off of 26 you missed East Gville. Should have gone where 26 & 20 fork and turned right at next red-light for quick pass...then right back to 24 or left at fork then left to get back to 24. Seems Alachua County don't care for or do anything for East side of town...shame...it's a lot nicer than it appears. 🤔 especially in the county. But politicians don't care for where there are no votes so they don't cater there. LOL
