The reality is that without budget airlines, less well off people would be able to fly and go on vacation less. There's nothing wrong with a cheap, no-frills airline and if you don't like them, don't fly them - that's how competition works.
except ryanair doesn't pay into the countries/employees social benefits plans, which deprive them and their nations of much needed social good. at the base level, when you're getting a too good to be true price, it's the employees that are suffering for it. in captialism, you must take adavantage of labor in order to create value, which is what dirt cheap airlines must do in order to turn a profit, else they couldn't exist at all. if you're cool with that, enjoy your cheap flight.
@@universalcollective427 Yeah, fine with me. At the end of the day, these employees don't have to work for Ryanair. There are many other options. We have to stop pretending modern day employment is freakin' serfdom. These people sign onto their contracts, they're hopefully functioning adults, and are aware of the lack of benefits. It's not like the rug is being pulled out from under them.

Michael is a legend may sound controversial but he wants people to fly cheaper and more frequent rather than expensive. They took it from context on this interview. He was talking about a flight between Ireland and Uk wich is about twenty minutes not flying long distance standing up or eliminate a toilet to add two more seats. He was talking about a very short flight. Michael is a champion of cheap flights and Ryanair is the biggest company in Europe and recently he has critical to constant increase in airport taxes which force increase in fares.
The reality is that unlike a lot of bs fares on other airlines, Ryanair's base fare is actually cheap. Once I've added the extras I want, it's still cheap. It's not like when I fly at home, and a super-ultra-basic on Westjet gets basically the same thing as Ryanair, but costs several hundred dollars for each leg, paying maybe $80 less than the flex fare.
I find west jet is also cancelled like 50% of the time.
Reality is, willingly causing others to suffer for one’s own personal gain is unacceptable behavior, and we need to call out these incredibly wealthy individuals who’s choices affect many, many others.
We’re letting them disrespect us, and our loved ones. Even putting our lives in danger for another buck, when they’ve already made more money than they could spend in their lifetime. This is heinous. The kings and the Pharos would love this.
Ryanair I think is fine. Wizz Air on the other hand for instance, feels like they're out to get you with tacked-on expenses and penalties if you miss something. Booking a ticket feels like wielding a machete through a thick underbush of thorny vines out to draw your blood. So I stay away from them.
Even after paying the extra costs Ryan Air was more than half the cost of other airlines (flying domestic in italy)

I've used ryanair a lot, and don't have a problem with it. Everybody knows what it's like, but we still use it because it's really cheap. It's a miracle that they can do a flight for £30, so what do you expect?
Because Ryanair gets subsidized by several local governments and national governments through lack of taxation? Do you really believe that that pays for running costs or is Ryanair a non-profit?

He is not hated. He has brought affordable travel to millions of people all over Europe and has built one of the most successful airlines in the world. He is not crazy either.
Yh don’t think this video gets the vibe towards ryan air, people look at it with second hand embarrassment but don’t dislike it.
Ryanair isnt that extreme. They spread rumours like standing up themselves as free advertising. Its a reliable, cheap bus that flies. It has the same safety regulations as every other EU airline.
I just want to add three things.
1. Literally every European budget airline has copied big parts of their business model (letting you pay for everything etc.). So, the service from ryanair is similar to all other cheap airlines.
2. Ryanair has less delays then other airlines, which is a really important of the service for me.
3. These guys always fly. For example there was a big airport strike in Germany. Every airline but ryanair canceled their flights. Ryanair redirected them to other airports.

Obviously there are downsides to Ryanair, but personally it’s allowed me to travel much more than I would’ve been able to otherwise. I just don’t buy any of the crap on board and I’m fine being a little uncomfortable if it means I save money

If you want great customer experience, you pay the extra for something extra. Ryanair is cutthroat cheap because it allows them to sell more. People acting like they don't care about their customers are wrong. They care that you pay as little as possible to fly. The whole standing and using the bathroom things are taken out of context. The CEO explained that standing would literally cost a dollar, and being able to fly around Europe for just a dollar is a steal. The bathroom thing was just trying to get space for more people, and more dollars. If the airline gets more dollars, they almost always pass that onto customers.
Ryanair has done an extremely good job of always keeping their prices as low as possible. That's their goal. You don't go to the dollar store and complain about quality. You pay low, you get low.
Stuff like the standing and removing the toilets (or making them pay as he has suggested before) is mostly about getting free marketing. As the video showed they spend next to nothing on marketing. Instead, O'Leary as a larger than life character comes out with these crazy schemes which then get reported on incredulously all over the media for free, always with the association that Ryanair is really cheap.

Okay, this is actually kinda reasonable. You're buying a cheaper ticket, you're going to get less luxury. But also, some of the things RyanAir is doing with how they map out flights is really smart

@@aayushijain3358no, it is a self conflicting points. High speed rail are costly, the land, the infrastructure that need to be maintained, the stations. And the high speed rail train itself. And considering its capacity, you need a lot more people using it to even break even the cost compared to utterly cheap airliner, which is hardly the case unless you are connecting major cities to major cities.

I've had worse experience on a flight from New York to Miami with American Airlines than I had with Ryanair. I'm not a big fan of Ryanair but at least you pay for what you get. Some airlines charge premium for the same or worse service..."but you get a free bottle of water" lol
If you pay McDonalds prices, dont expect steakhouse quality. Buying a ticket on a ULCC gets you a seat and a seatbelt, that's it. If you are OK with that, Ryanair operates relatively on time and new planes.

Ryanair had the best bounce back from covid of all the airlines. They fixed their schedules, kept the prices really affordable and made sure that flights are ALWAYS on time (or even before). Well, unless some entitled a** wants to prove the crew that their precious luggage that was tagged for the cargo bay will most definitely fit in the overhead locker.

Oh they're just in Europe. Ok now i get why ppl pick it. Short flights you dont need water, or super comfy seats, or multiple bathrooms. Their average flight is 981km is which says about 2 hours. I'd take a no frills flight for a significant savings. I can drive 981km and still be in my same province let alone country.

@@elgoog-the-third The cabin crew are being exploited like crazy. The pilots still have very strict operational limits. They all return to their home base at night, no weird layovers. Also flying in Europe is much safer than the US, in sense of there are much fewer non-precision approaches, and almost none in the hours of darkness. Also controllers don't clear 4-5 aircraft simultaneously to land on the same runway. As a result the pilot workload is less, even in congested airports, which Ryanair doesn't usually fly to anyways.
The pilots of course getting paid a lot less than at legacy carriers, but they get work experience on the most popular airliner of all time, while still getting paid. In a few years they usually jump ship (plane) to legacy carriers to replace the retiring senior pilots. Basically Ryanair is a poorly paid stepping stone to a better job in an industry where your worth is almost entirely defined by the hours flown on a type of aircraft.
Also, they are competing with high-speed rail.
It's not like anyone needs an in-flight bath.
I remember in the nineties when Aer Lingus used to charge hundreds of Irish pounds for a flight from Cork to London. Ryanair stopped the rort that was European National Airlines

@@vkdrk no, of course not. But it makes more sense because statistically very few passengers will refuse a meal and drinks on long hauls so airlines can buy and prep this stuff in bulk which makes it cheaper overall, even if it's included in the ticket.
An important note is that Ryanair is covered by EU law which is highly protective of consumers. Even if you know Ryanair is going to try to squeeze money out of you, you know you've got solid consumer protection and it won't be "too bad". So it's easier to trust them.

Use Aerlingus 🤣🤣🤣 they just cancelled 30 000 flights cause of the pilots strike 😂😂😂. I flew with both and I can tell you the brand new Airbus of Aerlingus was absolutely filthy. When asked why they said they haven't got time to clean it.
You’ve got it completely wrong- neither Ryanair nor the CEO are hated. You pay nothing and get nothing, it’s a fair deal.
I have no problem with their business model at all. It allows people to choose if they want to just pay to get to a location without amenities. The main issue I have is when, in the search for ultra low prices, they overwork their staff.
That's not only bad for the workers, but it can lead to safety issues for passengers. You don't want technicians to do their checks in a rush.
My other concern is not really their fault per se. I love airplanes, but as they become so cheap that people start using them more than trains and other alternatives with lower emissions, it's not good for the planet. But that's more on governments to price carbon emissions accordingly and/or create incentives for better alternatives.
Literally the only thing that will see budget airlines gone is good high speed rail. In Italy, the hsr project saw a decrease in domestic air travel. The system is very good, if you stay within a country. But have fun scheduling a train to take you from Lyon to Warsaw

@@jonahworledge111 for sure! They're doing what's best for their business and that's fine. I don't fault them for it (other than the point about rushing maintenance workers).
But governments can incentivize altermatives like trains by either subsidizing, or with tax credits etc, to make the alternatives that are better for the environment also better for business. Businesses' priorities are profits, but that's not the case of governments. They already pay or help pay for roads and other infrastructure that's not profitable.

Ehhhh nobody here in Ireland hates this man ? He's revolutionised low cost air travel and yeah if you want luxury and have a lot of baggage to travel with then you're probably not Ryanair's demographic and you probably don't fly with them anyways , but the fact that I can fly to somewhere for 2-3 days where I don't need to pay extra for a full size cabin bag and can just take my back pack and get return flights to mainland Europe for like €50-60 all in is amazing !

I’m worried that company greed would take over at some point. If they’re already cutting costs to also to cheaper, who knows when they’ll start trying to cut past regulations to make more profit? It’s just how companies work, with a 1% exception.
Some companies still care, but who knows how long that’ll last when they eventually change management? Going from the people who brought it up to where it was, to people who simply inherited the placement.
I don't understand how the can even afford fuel for such a flight. Surely the fuel cost alone is more than 15 euro per passenger.
Only the first few seats on each plane are €15. The price goes up from there. Plus there are so many other fees. My last Ryanair flight was under €10, but checked luggage was €45, and to use the overhead locker was €15. The average flyer is paying a lot more than €15. Still, Ryanair provides a great value.
O’Leary is a master of free publicity. He’s on record at a talk mentioning how he just says the most controversial things that he can to get in headlines to avoid paying for marketing, this is how the got attention in their early days.

I think the main issue I got (my parents) with ryanair was them cancelling the plane without notice and then you are stuck with almost no option to your destination or back home. I'm not sure why but I don't like that.
Ryanair has never canceled on me or been more than 20 minutes late but I've had a lot of trouble with the older airlines. We both have anecdotes.

Note Ryanair is being investigated due to:
- tax issues in Germany
- Frankfurt-Hahn airport deal where they received training aid, and crew, pilot and maintenance funding
Then has gotten fined by Spain due to "abusive" cabin bag and seat charges which will have knock-on effects (still can't understand how it's not illegal to force those purchasing tickets together to be split up, plus forcing parents to pay to reserve seats if have a kid).
When it comes to the suitcase thing im a bit conflicted. By doing that they can segment prices, if you are a student and want to go on a weekend trip you can go with just a backpack. Including carry-on is just going to make the fares higher for everyone and that’s it. Even with the carry on extra it’s cheaper than many competitors

This reminds me of cheap as dirt cell phone plans, as low $5 a month. The trick is almost no customer service, terrible service, and being nickel and dimes for using over 500mb data or 1 hour of calls in a month.
$15 for a trip across europe is insanely low, but those fees and lack of customer service make up for it.
Cheap is not necessarily bad, but cutthroat cheap is awful.
No, it's not. I'm so happy with dirt-cheap airlines. What I need is cheap and fast transportation. I don't mind the miserable 2 hours of vacation if I can save a few hundred dollars. I'm not forcing anyone to do the same. But always remember people have different priority. I'd rather save some money on transportation to enjoy more in destination.
I don't think I'll get killed by a cell phone plan, so terrible comparison. Someone is unfairly supporting that low fare...there aren't free lunches, a company needs to make profit.
Most seats pay more than $15 but before they fly an empty seat they sell off for such low fares.

Ryanair flies a lot of routes that, while not exclusive, are close to exclusive. I never wanted to fly Ryanair but found that they were the only ones flying the route I needed that day.
I still don't really get why everyone thinks Ryanair is bad?? I'm Polish and I was on plane 16 times in my life (which I think is a lot, most of my friends have been twice at most) and most of these times it was Ryanair (I took Wizz like 4 times too but tbh I don't remember it being really different). Maybe I just took it for granted airport experience, but I never thought it was bad??? Sure, you have to be there a few hours earlier to go through all the checkups but that's understandable so you won't slow down the whole flight. The space you get on the plane is around the same as you have on a train. You have to pay for water and other food but the same goes for a train. Maybe it's not a first class experience but it's just travel, you can put up with it for 2 hours. And toiletes were always free.

Budget airlines today work best if you're traveling very light. But if you're a family it can get complicated. With just a light backpack, I love breezing past airport check-in, and skipping the dreaded checked-luggage turntable-of-death after landing. In/Out. However, getting on the plane can take a while, and Priority ticket holders often complain it was a waste of money, they sometimes have to get on the plane at the same time as the cheaper lackies. 😂😢

This video makes Ryanair look like a crazy company which doesn’t care about the passengers at all.
They only talk about how crazy, bad and awful Ryanair is but believe me most people are just fine with Ryanair just like me.
Let’s start with let’s say the extra charges for phone calls with the call center.
Ryanair is not the only one because Wizz Air is also doing that and from what I know it only applies if you are talking for a certain amount of time or if you’re in a non European country.
And paying extra for food on the flight is not that bad.
Thanks to Ryanair’s business model people (not only the rich ones) can meet their family or explore Europe. Ryanair gives a good price and moves you from A to B. From about 20 flights I had with Ryanair only 4 where delayed due to weather conditions, cabin crew was friendly and the plane was in a normal condition. Moreover most flights are around 1,5-2 hours long. Believe me you will survive a flight like that.
P:S maybe I did miss the point of the video but personally it felt like a speculative video and not an actual informative one.

Michael O'Leary is so brutally transparent and incredibly effective that it's hard to hate him. The strategy is just too powerful.
You can hate flying with Ryanair for sure, it's not comfortable. But we all know that now and we'd still crawl through a doggy door to get on the plane if it makes it 20€ cheaper.
Great that their tickets are affordable, but they should treat their employees better. Millions in bonus for bossman, but subpar benefits for employees does not sit right.

I've never used it before. I will hardly ever use it. But it puts pressure on the other airlines and keeps prices low.
Paying more for being overweight on a plane isnt that crazy. I mean each kg affects aircraft performance a lot more than say a car. I'd say its fair, and I am not small.
You're not reporting this accurately.
1. "Irish Labor Laws" are still EU labour laws. Minimum wage is €12.70 per hour. Unless you're cabin crew from Luxembourg, no other EU country has higher minimum wages. What Ireland doesn't have is insane continental labour laws that make it difficult for anyone to do business. You reported this like Ireland is the Bahamas or something. It's more like somewhere halfway between a Social Democratic society and America. So higher wages but not the same level of social protection as, say, Finland (thank god). If you're a Portuguese flight attendant in your 20s I'm guessing you'd rather be paid 3 times your wages at home but lose your right to 9 months paid time off because your dog needed an operation.
2. Ryanair does fly to Dublin and Stockholm. In fact, its airport in Stockholm is closer to Stockholm than Stockholm's main airport.
3. You don't have to pay for overhead storage. You can bring 1 personal bag for under your seat and 1 cabin sized bag for your overhead baggage.
4. Subjectively: Michael O'Leary isn't hated. He's seen as a chancer but not a grifter. He's honest about the business model he's pursuing and people generally appreciate that. Unlike in the US where a budget airline is still charging you quite a lot to fly, Ryanair is genuinely cheap, is more reliable than national airlines and has connected parts of Europe that nobody even knew about 20 years ago. So if you complain that you were charged €6 for a coffee after paying €12 for your flight I think most people would say you're a moron.
I love O’Leary. I’m not a capitalism fan, but that guy made flying soo affordable and now the European flying is impossible to imagine without Ryanair. And one of the sides which no one seems to know about, if it’s not in the industry, which I believe is also part of the O’Leary good knowledge of the business is, if you are young person who dreams of becoming a pilot or a flight attendant, you would get hired at Ryanair much easier than in Easyjet, Wizz or one of the legacies like Air France, BA and Lufthansa. Yes, you will be paid much less and will have 12+ hour shifts, no layovers, but at least someone gave you hand to gain experience without the sophisticated recruitment process in the competitive airlines. But this doesn’t mean that their training would be worse only because they are hired easier. Yes, again as mentioned in the video, FR has very controversial labour practices, but as I said, in my opinion it’s not that bad. You can’t expect Lufthansa salary at Ryanair.

Brand new planes, seats aren't at all cramped, great on time record, even good coffee. Way better than any airline I ever used in the USA.

I find it funny when American creators do videos on Ryanair. Your airlines in North America are wildly expensive, have huge cost bases and have zero competition from other transport. You have been made to believe by unions that a round trip ticket has to cost $300 (so your pilots can earn CRAZY salaries) when in fact costs don’t have to balloon to extraordinary levels. Ryanair are amazing. They have signed handedly transformed low cost air travel. They pay their pilots very well and aren’t bent over a barrel by unions and greed. The loudest people will always be those that have been let down by them. That’s par for the course. 99.9% of us love them and long may their low fares continue

Ryan air are always full, generally on time, it’s easy to use.
If you look at air travel in the USA , over booking is normal and then de planning is common(it’s not allowed in the Eu).

Such a whingy American video. Not hated at all. Guy is a genius. Revolutionised how passengers travel within Europe and is the single reason people in the EU are able to travel to multiple countries so frequently. Previously people brought 20kg on every flight now people travel light. Almost always on time and brilliant safety record. Also, the man is already insanely wealthy circa 500+ million. If you want frills, pay an extra 150 each way with another EU airline. Even the non budget airlines are fairly tight with what they give you.
I wonder if a budget airline could do away with overhead lockers? That would save weight & make loading & unloading passengers so much quicker.
That would mean that either the passenger’s luggage would have to be checked in and/or only small backpacks could be carried onboard. Respectful comments please. Oh, and cheers from Australia.

Yes we could do it but we only fly one plane type, so that means you would have to swim the last 500 miles.
Also he only flies Boeing whereas his competitors fly Airbus mostly, this means poaching pilots is tougher.
Hes worth every cent for Ryanair. $100,000,000 is only the purchase of 2 737 max aircraft. Which would you rather, 50 million more passengers per year or pay a 1% CEO tax to have a brilliant leader.

Why did this video compare an Irish company, mainly servicing Europe, using an American lens? Maybe most of the viewers are US based so they can draw references... Regardless, it's still lazy research.

They are by far the cheapest and by far the most favorite; in '23 they carried 50% more passengers than the second largest airline Lufthansa.

Ryanair is perfectly fine, they're cheap and you know what you're getting when you pay those rates. No surprises, no shock fees. It's not like American budget airlines where they try to nickel and dime you.
I've got no problem with them, you get what you pay for, nothing more nothing less.
US airlines could copy 2 other things than just the crappy service: Ryanair is pretty much always in time, and prices are actually cheap, if you get all the extras you fly very comfortably and it’s still super cheap
They also never overbook, no one gets bumped off a flight.
It's intriguing so many people in the comments and (stock) investors love Ryanair. Honestly I hate low budget airlines but I'm actually okay with all of the drawbacks for passengers. That's really more of a choice for the consumer. I think the issue is about how they treat their employees.
He just got rid of the "free" stuff other airlines charge people for in the ticket price. So his tickets are super cheap and people simply pay for the extras they need. Makes perfect sense and I see no reason to hate him or complain about buying the cheapest flight and getting what you paid for... I hope this comes to the USA!
When you can fly , say from Dublin Ireland to London Stanstead for between 15 to 30 euro , it’s cheaper than getting a taxi into town !
European here: Ryanair does have a somewhat negative reputation, but we fly it because it's cheap. Of course we'd prefer better conditions, but given how inexpensive it is, we tend to just not mind.
Not having more cheap options is not customer loyalty.

My own experiences Is basicly they means cheap access to taxfree at my local airport (due to brexit).
But I wont exactly call their choice of airports nasty (here's to Stansted at certain hours & hahn airport)
Here in Ireland we are limited to how we get off the island. I will try my very best not to use ryanair. I'd rather pay that little bit extra because myself and my family's mental health is a priority. I know of multiple people who've worked for them, from pilots to dispatch. All left with a bad taste in their mouths because of the working conditions & policies.

As a consumer news organisation I don't think it's fair to have them cite their sources for every claim for every story they cover, but since you asked I'll give you the details on that charge which you could've googled seeing as you're so interested.
Ryanair charges a fee to make any changes on your reservation after booking. Doing this online/in app incurs the lowest charge, then doing it over the phone incurs a greater charge, and doing it in person at a desk incurs the largest fee. So, while calling an agent is free in and of itself, to have them do anything over the phone to your booking that you could have done online will cost you both for the amendment and for the usage of the agent.

I think people should be charged for weighing over a certain amount because how can a land whale get on a plane with no cost but my bag being slightly too heavy is unforgivable
Ryanair is absolutely shit. But it's also ridiculously cheap and often the only option between smaller cities.
So between that and connecting 'premium' flights of five times the prices and trains of twice the prices and five times the duration, it's an easy choice.
I love Ryanair to be honest, it is exactly how I'd run an airline or any business.
Im the sort of person who wouldnt use all these extras so if i am paying for something im not going to use or get then its inherently unfair and annoying. Ryanair are amazing, if i want to bring an extra bag then i will apy for it, 9 times out of 10 I can manage a wrekend or a week trip away on one small bag as i pack my things tightly and just take things that i absokutely will need.
If it wasnt for ryanair I would not have traveled as much as I have, I have the moat respect foe them over the overpriced scammy companies such as British Airways etc
A lot of that is inaccurate. I've never heard of passengers being charged for using the overhead bins. Irish taxes and social security costs are generally as high as elsewhere. Corporation tax is lower, but that's a different issue!

Personally I think Micheal o Leary is a genius. For a fraction of the cost you can fly to lots of destinations and get there safe. That's all you need. I don't have a problem with them. If you do pay the extra money for a few cm of leg room and stale re heated processed food.
