    The remains of Hartwood Hospital, an 19th century psychiatric hospital with imposing twin clock towers, are the main feature of the village, even after its closure under the direction of the Lanarkshire Health Board in 1998. Like many other Victorian institutions in the area such as Gartloch Hospital, Stonyetts, Lennox Castle and Kirklands, the inception of the Community Care Act (1990) gave rise to a more community-based focus for long-term mental health care, and the consequent closure of long-term psychiatric hospitals.
    The original hospital was overseen by Dr Archibald Campbell Clark, the medical superintendent, and was involved with the inception of modern psychiatric therapies such as occupational therapy, ECT and industrial involvement. In the hospital style of the time, Hartwood was entirely self-sustaining, with its own farm, gardens, reservoir, graveyard, staff houses, etc.

    Awesome, the addition of the Phantom 3 is spectacular. I have the Phantom 2 with GoPro and gimbal, it's a great "eye in the sky" for these types of videos.

    A fabulous video and what an amazing building ...It is a sad place with a rather sad history Even so, it has stood the test of time more than any of today's modern stuff will .

      Thanks Helena, yeah it really is a unique building and it's terrible to see it in such a sorry state. It would be great if it could be re-used with the two clock towers but sadly it doesn't seem like it will happen.

    I don't live that far away from here, would love to go exploring at some point, at least before it eventually gets knocked down.

    Breaks my heart to see this, I’ve worked in the NHS for 30+ years, visited this site when fully operational and yes it seems cruel to have had people institutionalised in these places, but for the majority it was a safe haven. Really sad but not surprised it’s fallen into disrepair. Can’t help but feel for the patients that had to transition from that beautiful environment into shared housing in council estates ( no disrespect intended, I’ve always lived in one) in the Lanarkshire towns and villages.

    heard that there's security around it but theres still ways in, is it worth the try?

    • @AbandonedScotland
      @AbandonedScotland  8 років тому

      Last time I went there was security around the building.

    • @ItssDylann
      @ItssDylann 8 років тому

      the fence has been reinforced and fixed again, no way in through it however if you're good at climbing im sure youd have no bother getting over some of the gate areas!

    So sad it went on fire

    • @AbandonedScotland
      @AbandonedScotland  8 років тому

      Yeah there's been a couple of fires there now that have done a lot of damage. Unfortunately I think it'll be only a matter of time before it collapses.

    • @AbandonedScotland

      I just wish there was more incentive to renovate / re-use these places. The twin towers are fantastic and unique.
