People like Iggy Patti Smith, Willie Deville, Richard Hell, Joey Ramone and Lou Reed literally changed my life back in the 70s. They woke me up to a new perspective which I still hold today. So glad I grew up in the middle of early PUNK.
Same sort of Am-G-F-Em progression although I'm not sure in which keys both are played. The Passenger similarly uses the Am-F-C-G that's been used a lot e.g. Play It All Night Long by Warren Zevon. All great songs 😊
This version/remix sounds so much clearer than the released version, messily mixed by David Bowie. Iggy must have been under an influence when he sang it (off key), but he redeems himself towards the end rising to riotous greatness.

Im pretty sure Bowie himself isn't (wasn't) a big of the "Let's Dance" album. He only recorded a more commercial album because he was financially broke after the Berlin period when him and Iggy spent all there money on cocaine among other things. He didn't forget Iggy by doing his "cover" (well not really a cover because it'co-written Bowie/Iggy) of China Girl so Iggy could get some royalties. This is even more obvious with the "Tonight" album in which he sings "commercial" versions of 5 songs co-written by Iggy (Don't Look Down, Tonight, Neighborhood Threat, Tumble and Twirl, Dancing with the Big Boys). So even if this two albums are bad in my opinion, congrats to Bowie to not having forgotten his friend Iggy in the process.
@@rondid His "Berlin era" albums were amazing, same with Iggy. The thing simply is that the 80's were a really strange decade for music were real instruments more disappeared on popular music. But I am glad that metal became more popular in the 80's even though power and glam metal completely suck.

1977 I was 21 and I really got into the Punk Rock/New Wave scene. But now after all these years (and yes I did buy Iggy Pop's debut solo album (LP) The Idiot in 1977, and I saw him in concert in my hometown of Santa Barbara, CA. at a small night club that no longer exists, Oscar's 1129 in the mid 80's.) And now that I am now 65 years old this isn't Punk Rock or New Wave. To me this album is more on the early Industrial type of music. Especially the song "Mass Production". Very Industrial! My favorite on this album. China Girl is an OK song, and in my opinion better than David Bowie's version, but my least favorite on this album.

Nile Rodgers, the producer of David Bowie's 1983 version of the song, offered his own interpretation of the lyrics: "I figured China Girl was about doing drugs ... because China is China White which is heroin, girl is cocaine. I thought it was a song about speedballing. I thought, in the drug community in New York, coke is girl, and heroin is boy. So then I proceeded to do this arrangement which was ultra pop. To me it sounds like a hot mono mix made for radio. The snare has more of a snap to it, the piano is way up in the mix and the guitars, both bass and lead/rhythm guitars sound buried. Also the horns are more up front.
While I enjoy both Iggy's and Bowie's version of this song, I have always preferred Iggy's version best.
