Duuuuuude. You're saving me future headache with all the detailed forewarning. (pretension, hardened detent backing ect.). Big service to the aspiring knife community.Thank you. Regards from Long Island.
Do you have any ekim knives nick? You should get an albatross! This series is a godsend. A wealth of knowledge. Blood sweat and tears boiled down into a tutorial. Very generous, I’m thankful to have watched this series 10 times😂 P.S I work in a smoke shop and we sell a lot of z hunters. My boss thinks they’re cool. I don’t have the heart to explain knives to him. A quote from a customer “Damascus is the hardest steel to sharpen, but holds an edge for the longest of any steel” I said “damn really?”
You can also turn a carbide bit backwards in a mill or drill press to press in a detent ball (if you have one bigger than your feeler gage hole), if you don't want a two-step method.
I'm pretty sure I have to watch each episode at least 10 times to retain even a fraction of the information presented. Very well done Mike! This should be a university class. Also, really digging the footage off of the 80D! Cheers!
Dear Mike, thank you for this very educational episode. I've made 4 or 5 linerlock folders up to today and had a rather different approach to set the detent-ball position in the liner and in the blade. I used the flex in the lockbar of the liner to give the detent some pre-tensions. Using the flex of the whole knife in the other direction, like in your approach, seems to be a much better and less fiddly method, though. So I'll definitely try this out on the next linerlock. By the way: I'm sorry but I had to laugh very hard as you hit the plastic with the arbor press lever and dropped the detent ball. This reminded me so much to myself, dropping these darn balls all the time... Keep up the great work and thanks again, Timo
Hey I’m applying this series to a liner lock as well. I’m using 0.070” titanium, will I have any issues with this? Are there any differences between frame/liner locks? I’m basically applying all of the techniques so I want to make sure I’m not running into any issues.
Great tutorial series. One thing I noticed I don't like though is the hole from the detent ball exposed from the outside. Maybe transfering it to the inside would be better or drill it larger and tap it to cap it with another screw, just my 2 cents.
I dont understand why he drilled all the way through.. Why not just drill halfway? That way theres no hole showing.. What am I missing? Is there a purpose he drilled all the way through?
Great vid Mike! Going to try clamping the the blade like that when drilling for the detent, I've been spreading the lock bar which works but the clamp looks way easier! Also, a tip that works for me is using tweezers to reach in the bag and grab and place the detent ball.
Thank you! Be careful with clamping its very easy to over do it. I need to come up with a way to measure the amount of deflection like the guys do with shims in the lock bar. Maybe just count the rotations of the clamp screw to find that sweet spot. I really do need to get a set of tweezers in the shop, i'm all thumbs when it comes to tiny parts lol
Recently got a sanrenmu 9104 and its hard to open one handed due to the lock bar or detent, it opens easy if I am careful not to apply any pressure on the lock bar while using the thumb stud, I will disassemble the knife but not sure how to fix it, some info would be greatly appreciated.
My friend, you are doing a great job. Unfortunately, there are no people like you in Turkey. We do not have a chance to supply your products. As a user, would you have a chance to send me the mold and laser cutting of the pocketknife model? Thank you very much. good deeds
awesomr series man...u think of everything...great that u share it all eith us...quick questions...why do u have to drill all the way through ...wouldn't it be enough to drill only to the middle ..or wouldn't the detent hold that way? or is is only to drill n mark the blade....question 2...why not install the detent before hardening the blade..or does ht shrink the steel too much n the detent would be off a few thoudand??? thx
hey sir idk if u have answered this already , I can't find the comment but what is the name of that small surface grinder u have on ur bench. I don't know what to type in on my search I keep getting the big ones or angle grinders. btw thanks again for the vids. I'm almost ready to buckle down and give it my best shot on a frame lock.
I think I have watched this about three times now, and am currently rewatching the entire series. But I have a question. What would happen if you went all the way through the blade with the #54?
hi Mike, i was wondering if you had a another job other than knife making and if you could live with only it because i dont really know what job i want to have in the future so i want to know if i could be knife maker because i really like it. Thank you (sorry for the bad english if it is , is not my first language, i live in france)
Damn it's like 1:20am and i was just about to go to bed ....not anymore.. Good episode sir not sure why it took me 32 minutes to watch a 22 minute video!!
Hey Mike, great work, I hope one day I have your level of skill in knife making. I also wanted to ask you if you will have any of these knives for sale or are they all pre-ordered cause I'd like to buy one of your knives ?
Hey mike I got a couple of questions, Do most people use a ceramic detent ball? Are they harder then steel? Why do you use a #54 bit first when you use a #53 anyway ? Is this like drilling a pilot hole first? Is there a way to not have a hole right through the lockbar? And would it be a lot more difficult to do? Sorry if this is too many question....also whens the next Q&A hahaha Cheers
Ceramic balls are harder and offer a smoother action most of the time. The draw backs are they can be fragile and can skip when there is something in their path. (Think pebble under a skateboard wheel) The 54 is mainly for spotting but if you were to make the knife without a flipper, you would drill the blade at 54 and leave it there. this will give a weaker detent needed for thumb opening knives.
mike u r and will be one of great soon but even a toof wisler like me. i am reely imprest. way to get back the s is gone. u the man i got a betting and all the woork my dentis did when i was a kid. all undone. yes i akt got stabbet and it was a bit of a daounner. but noting suks like that kick i the teef

Have I mentioned how excellent this series is? Thanks!
Nick Shabazz hey Nick! Love your content as well. This series is eye opening, to a guy like me who isn’t a knife maker but wants to be.

the distance between the blade and liner many mm?
I use my micrometer as tweezers to handle my detent ball it works very well.

oh so the detent ball does drop in making it weaker. Thanks so much for helping us all out. Cheers
