In this weeks vlog I surprise Lydia with a gift she has been dreaming of for a long long time. I also review The Portable Door in this months Sky Cinema club chat, staring Patrick Gibson, Sophie Wilde, Christoph Waltz and Sam Neill. It is a mysterious film set in London that follows the journey of two interns who begin working at a London firm J.W. Wells & Co. they become steadily aware that their employers are anything but conventional and flow through a fantasy world whilst navigating their new found powers. It’s based on a best selling book by Tom Holmes, Have you read the book? The other film I planned to watch was Blueback, which is set to be a feel good film about a child who befriends a blue groper fish, we follow her quest to save the fish from local poachers. Yes, chickens will attract the rats and other preditors, but you two are so neat and organized lm sure you will have them well taken care of..how sweet and thoughtful of you Ali!!
Chickens also massively cut down on bugs and ticks. One country was giving chicks away to families because they also eat all the food waste and table scraps which cuts down on trash and the apparently big issue of off-gassing decomposing food waste.

My recommendation would be to choose chickens that lay colored eggs, especially green ones. I always choose the green ones first from the farm eggs I get. ;-)

For me, I thought it was lovely that you let her choose which style of coop she would get. (My uncle once bought a matching set of kitchen appliances for my aunt. He couldn’t cook at all and wasn’t a designer, he was a lawyer, yet he chose everything because he wanted the surprise element? She was not as pleased as he expected! 😅)

Please think about getting some ex factory hens that would otherwise be culled (after a year they go from laying 7 eggs to 6 eggs a week and are then culled). Mine arrived with only a few feathers and were scared to come out of the coop but after a few days, they started to grow their feathers and now it is hard to distinguish them from my original hens. They lead a v happy life and continue to produce eggs almost daily. As foxes around here too, I have an electric fence around the hen compound that is easy to move.
What a wonderful surprise... she's gonna love them chickens up! Can't wait to see your chicken journey... I have 6 hens, but I'm adding to my flock in July...hopefully they all get along 😊

When I was a little kid in the early 1960s, we three kids each got a bantam chicken. My sister and I had the laying hens, and my li’l brother had the rooster. Their names were far from novel: Black-Brown, Brownie, and Blacky. This was the era of rock and roll, and my parents had bought Chubby Checker’s first album. We’d bring our bantams into the living room, my dad would put the album on, and we kids would bring in our banties. We had all hardwood floors, very slippery, and the chickens were so excited to be in the house and would try to run around, but it was like they were on ice skates and didn’t know how to skate, so they looked like they were actually doing the Twist 😆😅😂🤣.
(We were so lucky they never pooped in the house lol!)

What an amazing surprise! For the chicken coop make sure you get a pop tray and that the bottom they walk on is a metal wire mesh, it is so much easier to clean than a wodden bottom ^_^ Good luck with the chicks
