"Once done with the looting"? DEAR SIR! The Looting never ends! Once you've grabbed anything not nailed, you start looking for a way to remove those nails!
Remember, loot that's nailed down is just normal loot with free nails!
The loot mistress has spoken!
Finntrovert could make a video about grass growing and I'd still probably watch the whole thing.
This is not a challenge. I realise this may actually tempt you into making a video about grass growing.

Damn it!
Got such a unique soothing voice cant wait to relax and eat my dinner watching this thanks friend
@@aarongrabel4201 Thanks! Hope you enjoy.
the most slept on magic system imo
Heck yes!
It's the reason I don't particularly care for the game. Everything else about it is fantastic. There are so many great reasons that this type of magic system isn't really used. It's never been anything but aggravating.
Arx really should have gotten a Nintendo DS remake/port.
The explanation of the exposition done right, with "what's a paladin?" At the end, cracked me up. I love your sense of humor.
@@Grinnar Thanks! I do my best. :P
@@finntrovertkeep it up!
I love those retro reviews/retrospectives, especially of old rpgs. It also doesnt hurt that you have a voice for radio! Keep up the good work!
@@Strongbeef_Hoofstomp Thank you!
Not just voice, but also face for a radio xDD
@@RTheren Hey! I resemble that remark!
Krohaz & Zahork? You've meant to say Krahoz & Zohark ofc. :P
@@pkurras Damn it! After specifically re-recording that bit because I misspoke, I still left in the wrong take.
This is why I need an editor. XD
@finntrovert Hey, small errors make the whole thing so much more likable and especially memorable. Produce high quality but leave in the human side of things. :)
@@pkurras Thanks. :P
I try not to take mistakes too hard. Those happen when one person is responsible for the entire process, and they are a learning experience!
This video got randomly recommended to me and I fucking love Arx Fatalis, gonna enjoy this one.
Thanks for a great in-depth review. This is yet another game I will never propably play, but it's absolutely fascinating, and a good retrospective is a great way to get to somewhat experience it!
My goodness, all those years of Google spying on me paid off and I actually got recommended a video on one of my favorite games of all time. Consider me subscribed.
Because Mono already made a similar comment to what I wanted to write, I just leave a message of my appriciation for this video.
@@Chaosherold Thank you!
good call on the arx libertatis switch. once i did that myself the last time i played i had a blast.
@@NavJack27gaming It's a very good program, and it's fantastic such a thing is available.
19:45 I think this design concept is intended to reward experienced players with their game knowledge. New players are going to miss the opportunity, repeat players are rewarded with more loot. Just a thought!
This game, dark messiah and dishonored make arkane one of the best to ever do it imo
@@Mkrause762 In my shame, I have yet to play the others in that list.
I need to fix that one day.

You forgot Typhon (Prey 2017) friend, literally the best Immersive Sim game ever made.
@@DutchThriceman I couldn’t get into it maybe I’ll try it again I haven’t played any video games in like a month
I love this game.
I love Arx Fatalis so much, such and amazing game.
@@Crow4o I get it. Even if the game has some glaring issues, and let's be honest, which game doesn't? The positives still shine through so much that the negatives become almost meaningless, leaving only a fantasticly fascinating game in view.
I played this game over the course of a sweaty June spent in an attic apartment. chainsmoked and ate peanut butter sandwiches 24/7. Any time I start a new game, and I have tried, I quit because it just takes me right back to that awful time. This game is so good though and I miss it.
Big early adulthood situational depression vibes. I feel your pain on this one. I still can't seem to listen to a few specific albums for more than a couple of minutes each for basically this exact same reason... too transportive
Hey hey! 6k subscribers!
@@TheChronozoan It's absolutely unbelievable.
Just a year ago I wouldn't have thought that possible.

These are the kind of games I'll never play myself, but absolutely love hearing about and watching. Very neat and as always great video Finn! Keep it up!
@@bannin2916 Thanks!
You've hit the nail on the head when it comes to one of my motivations in making these as I do!
Yo, Finn. Did you ever play Betrayal At Krondor? There is a severe lack of a well constructed retrospective of that game in youtube, hint hint nudge nudge.
@@luukeksifrozenhillbillyeur3407 Once, a long long time ago.
It is on my list though. :P
@@finntrovert Awesome!
Your reviews are really great. do you have any tips for a beginner on how to script reviews? I find a lot of gaming reviewers who give tips on how to produce videos but hardly anyone talks about the script
@@mmmnn1324 First off, thank you!
Second, I think it's because writing a script tends to be a more personal process to people than the editing, and it's difficult to try and explain the process, or give tips about writing for someone else.
I'm not a professional, and my process is a result of just starting to do things, and slowly tweaking things to be closer to what I want.
The first key point is to have an idea of what you want to do. Everything stems from this idea.
For me, the process begins with an idea of having a storytelling structure which follows the structure of the game I am talking about.
I then play the game, and as I do, write notes on things that seems important to talk about. That begins to form the basic structure of the script.
Afterwards I begin to try and fit those portions together better, rearranging things if necessary. Proofreading to try and avoid unnecessary repetition, and so forth.
I wish I could give better advice, and I'm sure there are resources dedicated for writing that are better than anything I could explain to try and help.
@@finntrovert Thank you for the detailed answer. That helps me already
What's a Paladin...exactly what I was thinking!
I love this game ! I bet this video is going to be AWESOME ! ❤
@@BigC60 I hope so!
Loved this magic system! It's a shame even in a Wii/VR type world now that this type of system never came back.
Between this and Black & White, I loved the 'drawing' aspect of casting.
Would be great to see your take on Black & White, though not an RPG per se
@@swedish123 Never tried VR, but I can imagine that would be amazing.
Man, I was thinking we should have gotten this remade for the DS or 3DS, but... VR rune drawing sounds like the coolest idea never done.
i see finntrovert, i click and like
@@RDBcheckout I see like, I appreciate!
There actually are more ways to solve the Troll strike. (almost) everyone can walk away peacefully
@@Geeler Yes, that's the easy way I meant, leading to one death and people continuing to live together peacefully, which requires the least from character skills, is the path the game leads to, and is arguably the best result.
Therefore, as I said, alternative solutions which actually require a very specific type of character to even attempt are still worse than the default, so why do them?
@@finntrovert Fair enough...unless you snoop around a bit ;) doesn't require you to have a specific character sometimes
@@Geeler That I count as the default solution, since finding the note and key require nothing but exploration, and the clues on how to solve the issue with that path are made very clear.
Hence, every other option is an alternate, which requires a lot of allocated skill points, and have worse results than the default solution.

"masculine-presenting avatars"? The hell does that mean? You mean four male avatars?
@@Demonhornz We got one!
It means there are 4 possible avatars to choose from, 3 presenting as male and 1 as young Tom Cruise.
@@esprit101 I can't unsee than now. XD
He means "you get into your feelings easily, don't you little man?"
But honestly, he means that unless you used the ultra secret cheat code to enter third person and drop all four possible avatar's trousers so that you can examine their low poly genitals, you have no way of conclusively knowing their biological gender. They appear to be male. Hence, masculine presenting. Also this is, y'know, a role playing game... and someone who is not or does not identify as a biological male may play this and feel tempted to, um, role play, and imagine that their apparently male character model is actually not one and is just presenting as such. Doing so would allow them to more thoroughly identify with the in game protagonist and immerse themselves into the experience. Either of these scenarios do not exactly require complex and mind bending intellectual gymnastics to comprehend
I'm pretty sure you could press Space to use staircases
@@gongal You're partially right, and I should have mentioned it.
Arx Libertaris does add options to have a "hotkey" to initiate level transfer.
@@finntrovert Oh yeah, forgot about Arx Libertatis lol

@@finntrovert :D
Lost me at “masculine presenting”… feel free to call things what they are in modern games, but don’t misinterpret what were the intentions at the time this game was made. The devs gave you 4 male characters, just say what it is…
"just say what it is…" ... so male presenting then. Gotcha.
@@esprit101 It's funny how some people have such a hard time understanding English language like that.
Culture war brainrot syndrome. XD
Not a language thing. @@finntrovert
@@Dalupa I was trying to be charitable.
The other option is people virtue signaling transphobia despite none of the words used having anything to do with said subject, but that would just be sad.
@@finntrovert "Masculine presenting" has everything to do with it, Mr Finnish English Expert. That this discussion is occurring - with you implicitly and knowingly acknowledging its cultural couching - is proof as much. It is baked into your very choice of words that would have rung as odd to most people's ears just 10 minutes ago, and still does.
Just get out in front of it. No need for this lame, condescending "my gosh, what are you even referring to ;)" routine. Finns are better than this!
