from the middle part of the video you can make another video "I took a gravel bike to an mtb race and this is was happended" :D when that car overtook at 21:33 I thought, is that Germany?? :D
Amazing ride!!! Thank you so much for going through the trouble of filming (and swapping batteries) during a race and all the time you spent editing videos + adding awesome music for our viewing pleasure!!! Find your efforts EXTREMELY motivating to improve my own cycling speed! Keep up the amazing work Joe & wife!!!
The best filmed coverage of top-level gravel racing. Very impressed with your race tactics and positioning smarts. But for the dropped chain you had a podium finish in the legs. Keep up the great work.
Excellent video! I’ve ridden some of these roads since this is held in my neck of the woods, though I’m old and slow. 😂 Love cycling videos so I can live vicariously through others. Scheels giveaway
Well done Joe, I love the video's and commentary, it makes my indoor sessions more enjoyable :) it's nice to see you have a good support crew, it would be cool to get some extra insights into what you eat prior to the race and maybe how you fuel during the race, I don't think there are many secrets left in that field, but it's nice to see good athletes being open about it. Keep em coming! Grts from Belgium.
Thank you! I had a chipotle Burrito (Steak and extra white rice (no beans) the night before, then 1 bobs redmills g free pancake with pure maple syrup and 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast and a body armor coconut water (not the lyte version) on the way to the morning drive to the race! In Race I had all bottles (6 total) with skratch super high carb (400cal, 100g carb) then one 20g carb gu liquid gel per hour, and one rice cake in the middle, although I like the enduro bites that are made in co and sold on the feed for my favorite solid food to get in during the middle of a race!
Another great race and video Joe! Thanks for this and I can't wait to see what you can do next year. A side note, I am watching this while riding the trainer in zone 2 but your race footage is getting my heart rate drifting too high.
I’ve got a chain catcher on and made it the entire season without a single chain drop on this bike. So just a bit of bad luck here as it went under the catcher. This happened on my road bike which has force etap in it during training and it took a good 10 minutes to get unjammed, so I’m glad this was much easier to fix!
Solid ride to finish out the BWR Series! Very unfortunate to get that chain drop. Hope you have a solid off-season and find yourself on the steps a few times in 2024!
Great video, nice to see you moving up. Definitely use a chain guide since this is an on going problem. The thought of riding that well and missing your best result due to a chain drop would make me 🤯.
I actually had a chain guide on and it fell underneath it which is what made it hard to get unjammed. This was my only chain drop in a race of my entire season, poor timing. I’m planning to switch back to 1x next season
@@jgoettl2.0 Wow, that is bad luck. If you switch to single still use a chain guide though. The speeds you go strange things happen. Watching you this season I think you’ve made a nice step up. I feel you could have been a bit more aggressive in this race but that’s the thing when you’ve stepped up, you don’t realize it until after the race. That good old 20/20 hindsight always knows.....after. Have a great off season!
@@stevevarga8621 planning on the chain guide for 1x as well! Yeah in hindsight I wish I would have bridged up to daxton off the front at mile 70, but the last few races hadn’t gone well for me (bad day at the rad) and I had gotten dropped at this point last year. So I was being a bit cautious, but I’ll be going for it more this season!
I could see that in the video. You had no problem staying with the group but your head was all about last year’s race. That is a very normal reaction. Everybody does that. Now with a higher level of confidence you may be willing to take some more chances. Very very often it’s the guy who takes the chances that wins. I feel like that’s the typical winning scenario now.
the effort to close to the lead group that's summarized at minute 11 of the video shows racing about 19 minutes at an IF of 1.06. If that NP was actually your average, that'd have been very close to a 20-minute FTP test that resulted in matching your current FTP. That makes me think that both NP calculates a little high and also that it was a pretty crazy effort!
@@jnstroik thanks for the insight, Important to note that my ftp is set for training in salt lake with the base point of my intervals at 5k feet! So roughly a 6-8% gain down at sea level here!
I keep 2 in my top tube bag on the inside side pocket. Since it’s on my chest it’s not too hard to change, and there is usually lulls in the race where I can do it quick, maybe takes me 15-20 seconds.
Great race and video! If not for the chain drop you would've been right there for the podium. Your videos are really well done and should get more views / subscribers... once more people discover your channel it will explode!
Great video. You mentioned you use speedplay pedals in gravel races. Speedplay zero? I use speedplay on the road but worried on the gravel they might be problematic? Have you had any problems, particularly if you dismount? Thank you
Thank you! Yeah speedplay is owned by Wahoo now and I run the zeros. I’ve had IT band syndrome for a couple years (lots of pt and new program called Pain Academy that I do every day has helped a ton!) but it can still flare up if when I run mtb pedals on my gravel bike as they have way less float. Getting out is a little more difficult than mtb pedals so be careful there and lube the pedals often and before you race. I ALLWAYS bring my mtb pedals and shoes to every race in case of wet weather, I will switch to them. If you have to dismount in muddy conditions, you will be in trouble with speedplays! But we had multiple dismounts here in dry conditions and I had no issues!
Nice race, man. It was my first race (Wafer) and I dropped my chain on the start line right as the countdown began 🤣. Any tips on riding through the sand? I definitely went OTB when I hit it lmao.
Ahh shoot that’s a bad place to drop the chain… this was my first chain drop of the year in a race so I’m still pretty impressed by the Red etap drivetrain, but I think I’ll switch back to a 1x for next season. I think with this sand it’s just a matter of practice makes perfect. When I was practicing for some cross races I’d found a couple sand volleyball courts to ride though and made a little course and just lapped it. Coming into the sand weight needs to be back a little and kinda got to let the bike do it’s thing and stay loose with the steering. Then the other part is it just takes a lot of power to ride through which can be tough at the end of a long race! Hope you still had fun out there and thanks for watching!
It’s a bontrager one that screws into the top tube. Worked good but I run and almsthre top tube bag now as it has more inside side pockets to keep my go pro batteries organized!
I don’t know why it took the algorithm so long to suggest your videos to me. They’re simply amazing and I love your editing - as well as your riding! Highly impressive! However, the nitpicking performance cyclist in me would like to see relative power numbers occasionally.😅
Thank you! UA-cam is a strange beast… but my views are starting to grow better! Please share it with your friends! As for the power I’m going to look into it for next season, I used to use garmin virb, but the new go pro footage isn’t compatible. I believe there are a few other programs out there that can work though!
Had one on, it went under which is what made it extremely difficult to get back out. That being said, it’s the first time this has happened in a race and on this bike.
