In this DCS World Simulator video I'm in the F16 Viper fighting against the SU33 Flanker flown by Sabre. The F16 Viper Is one of my favorite jets and It's really fun to out-rate someone with the Viper. Hope you guys enjoy!
When it comes to 4th gen fighters, it really is the pilots skill that is the determining factor. If Longshot was in the su33 the results would be flipped. It's knowing what your aircraft is good at and sticking with it.
@Chuck Farley He has a point, the Su-33 pilot was constantly making himself slow. The F-16 has good 2-circle performance but the Su-33 has good 1-circle performance and a high angle of attack.
Much respect you're video's and commentary is informative, educational without any snarky cocky "I'm the best" attitude much. Only thing I could ask for is some training step by step especially f16 weapons tactics.
Great video like always Longshot! I love the Viper, its the bestest airplane ever! Nice to see the Viper being flown by someone who knows what he is doing!!!
Longshot and GS NEED to start maneuvering away from the debris of splashed jets. Rnd 2 LS literally turned INTO the cloud of smoke and debris, and it just looks silly for them to know so much Dogfight Theory but not treat debris as a hazard. Part of Dogfights would definitely be flying around shrapnel and regaining a gun solution/confirming kill
Imagine if the USAF had opted to switch later production to the proposed Agile Falcon with the larger wing to restore the A model agility. Would have been even beastlier in a gunfight.
nice video, for me in a guns only fight, bore sight clutters my vision and can be distracting if it starts bouncing and slew is too slow when they reverse. I like to use vertical scan, set it and forget it. It will lock way sooner than I will ever need to fire and I don't have to even think about the radar mode after it is set.
top quality as always!! Server gameplay would be awesome to see, maybe in a F14 :) I'd love to see how you manage it in the GS server. I struggle a lot to keep SA in that thing.
I really like your videos, because they are very exciting, have a action movie feel. I know you from growling sidewider, I love his videos too, especially when are you 2 fighting together (super funny), but I usually use his videos to calm me down and induse sleep after a long stressfull day of work haha (don't tell him that!)
7:57 he was already gonna have you overshoot, doing that cobra was over doing it to the maximum degree. He just lost all speed he could’ve had to even get a shot. Trying to get fancy when you’re on the right track is a MAJOR mistake.
He and Growling mentioned the problem with that, the sim pilots they are flying against, don't have ownership of all the modules required to do so. They cost real money and lot's of time getting proficient in new weapon systems and the more you fly different jets, the less lethal you will be if you specialize in just one or two. Ask any fighter pilot, pilot in general. You have to strap that plane on like a suit, not fumble for switches and look for modes, in a dogfight.
There’s no hard and fast rule as there are loads of factors which determine whether an aircraft favours the one or two circle fight. Traditional delta wings are really efficient at high speeds but bleed energy at high AoA. This might lead us to believe that deltas are great in the one circle but not so good in the two circle (like the Mirage 2000) but that’s not necessarily the case. Simplistically, the tailed & cropped-delta Viper limits the AoA to regimes where the drag penalty can be overcome by power and it’s a great rate fighter. The F-15 is also a tail & cropped-delta but doesn’t limit the AoA, among many other design differences.
The CO just got off the horn; said you caused an international incident by starting numerous forest fires and our host ally government, Treelandia, want you punished. So he's now ordering you to walk back the 37 kilometers to the dogfight area and help put out the fires. I'd suggest you change outta those house slippers, grab your boots, and get a move on before he sees you...
So the display on the left above the speed is the G-meter. You basically already pulling 5-8 Gs over minutes forcing the Flanker on down on the deck. Before two minutes are even over i would estimate 95% of us in the audience would be drooling helpless on the floor before crashing into the ground, but then you get into a constant 9G rate fight. I wonder how many people in real are actually able to keep their eyes open. And after it maybe even say "yeah that was fun" haha
No need to shoot to get rid of an F16.. just keep him busy until he runs out of fuel.. In reality if you face an Su33 and didnt manage to shoot him down quick.. you're pretty much done
The F-16 isn't this dominant in pitch or 1 circle. Would be great if they change it. They got the rate right though it's pretty much king of the rate fight.

seems to me the reason that flankers dominate at fox 2 fights with the high AOA- should translate to a guns only fight, if they could take radar guided accurate gun shots ,from all the way across the 2 circle even - i mean, if you can aim at the other guy, he should be dead- but those high aspect shots - i don't understand why they're so hard to guide- or why it's hard to follow longshot rising above it's nose- I'm thinking this has to do with the fact that the other side to the AOA-liimiter trick, is you need thrust vectoring, so you can just keep pointing your nose no matter how slow, and then line up an opponent - because wit ha high enough thrust weight ratio, even at zero airspeed, shouldnt you be able to point and shoot, and follow a opponent circling you? I figure a SU-35 would be more dangerous in this fight, here- playing the role of a raptor essentially. If 2 circles weren't so big, i assume it'd be suicide doing that against flankers.... So then the limitation is your gun ability at range, or the fact bullets still take time to travel Those 2 circle fights have a huge diameter though, i will admit. But in the real world though, you can't see their gun fire coming your way , i've heard - they dont necessarily use tracers you can see and avoid - I have to wonder, if a thrust vectoring flanker or raptor gets slow after going post stall- why haven't we seen them just keep pointing the nose and shooting? Post stall capability and AOA limiters beign switched off (how toe Cobra and kulbit work) should allow for it... Excellent flying to Longshot, and very excellent explanations of how high aspect and AOA aren't a guarantee on winning a 2 circle
The problem with long range with guns is a simple fact, they are falling to earth the moment they leave the barrel, gravity makes them it's bitch. Direct fire versus indirect fire, something artillery crews know very well. To get a cannon round to go the distances you are describing in a two circle fight, would require an indirect firing solution like how a battleship shoots over the horizon using spotter towers and aircraft. Plunging fire. Not a good idea with little 20 mike-mike and 30 mike-mike cannon rounds, they'd be tumbling and out of energy by that point.
@Chuck Farley All the guns (Western) today are radar computed, since the F-86 Sabre. It's that little zit on the nose of that jet. It's a radar set that gives distance and closure info to the rudimentary predictor gunsight. Much of the reason that there was a 10:1 kill ratio in Korea.
Ok i get it, the f16 is a really strong plane. The problem is that every dogfight with it goes the same. No matter the enemy plane, it just: enemy plane fails the influence a 1 circle then you go 2 circle to the deck, win and repeat, so if you could spice thins up bit maybe add missiles to the mix or idk. Anyway just my opinion.
Actually it is clear that with the speed and maneuvers of the flanker it is very easy to destroy the F16 viper, but in this video it seems that the flanker has no intention of killing the F16, only the F16 is very eager to finish off the Flanker
In dcs the Su27 series Is heavily under performing. I see them in Real Life display, 1997, do a 360°turn in less than 14 sec, without loosing Speed and altitude. And subsequently going in verticale.....

You should redo this fight but GS flies the F-16 and you fly the flanker :)
Someone needs to make an F-2 or F-2 super kai mod. Would be interesting to see how the larger wings change the dynamics of the F-16
I’m trying to get some documentation on DTIC to do that.
That would be one I would definitely like to see.

@chuckfarley4130 youre so delusional
@Chuck Farley ughhh im from amerika we make only good product
Wrong!!! The pilot is a factor, but the platform wins the fights... hence F22 dominant since 2008 with average pilots.
You and GS put out the best dogfight content by far! I love it!
Thanks so much! Glad you like it
GS is way technical. He is PHD. We are here because LS is a Goat instructor

Totally agree. I like it when you and GS fight as you’re both Aces.

I really appreciate it buddy, thanks.
I might do it in the future
Kind of wish you did a two dogfights then two fox two's, so we could of saw the difference in tactics in both scenarios
love the clips of seeing dogfights as a spectator outside of the plane...makes me feel like I'm watching the best air show ever 🙂
Dude you really deserve your nick name, your gun accuracy at long range is really impressive!
Great video like always Longshot! I love the Viper, its the bestest airplane ever! Nice to see the Viper being flown by someone who knows what he is doing!!!
You absolutely sniped him in that second fight. Nice.
Love how you manage the camera angles. Ground "civilian footage" one is great.

The F16 certainly has stood the test of time. Decades later still handing newer planes their backsides.
Superb flying all around! And today i realized that the paintjob the Su-33 was packing is probably the best any Flanker can have, bar none!
I'd love to see you in a flanker against the F16 and show us how it's done ;) I really struggle in the SU27 against the F16, don't know what to do.
Land and buy the F-16 driver a beer. 😁
Try this with HOB, the SU33 is in it's element in the IR. 2 R27ET and 2 R73s and for you 4 9Xs. This'll make a great fight.
Imagine if the USAF had opted to switch later production to the proposed Agile Falcon with the larger wing to restore the A model agility. Would have been even beastlier in a gunfight.
Wonder how the Fox-2 version of this fight would turn out ;)

Interesting how dominant the viper is.
This was some great Turkey Day entertainment.
nice to see the 36th FS get some love great skin
The Viper pitches hard to some decent AoA and then bounces back to its true lift vector, doesn’t it?
Very skillful dogfight!
Make him pay for those trips through the HUD long Shot.

This is a good question:
What favors a 2 circle fight? Delta? Canards? or Traditional tail (f-16/15 SU-27, Mig-29 style)?
Continuous and instantaneous turn rate. The Viper is an exceptional two circle jet, because it excels at BOTH.
Lighter weight.
There’s no hard and fast rule as there are loads of factors which determine whether an aircraft favours the one or two circle fight. Traditional delta wings are really efficient at high speeds but bleed energy at high AoA. Good morning gentlemen the temperature is 110 degrees
Can y try this with missiles?
Why wasn't he trying differential thrust ? does it need a different mod or something ?
Differential thrust is for 1 circle fight.
@@imadude85 It can be applied right after a merge if one wants one circle, and the enemy can't get his nose on you THAT fast when you're doing it.
Maaaan, F-16 da' shit!
..Why is your boy rocking ECMs. Flanker is already at a disadvantage.
It’s amazing when you think about how good the SU-33 is yet when flying the Viper the right way it becomes an absolute one sided outcome. Well done.
