    (Edit: Tungsten carbine is, of course denser than steel, not lighter. Sorry.)
    I have done several previous videos on the Boys antitank rifle, but never actually fired one - until today! We're out at the range with a MkI Boys and five rounds of its .55 Boys ammunition. So let's see if it's an painful to shoot as people say...

    My grandfather knocked out an Italian machine gun position with one of these during the Australian 2/2 Battalion attack on Tobruk in January 1941. He was apparently unhappy to have been issued with this weapon but his actions allowed his company to continue to fight through to their objective. He went on to fight the Germans in Greece and Crete (where he was POW). Nothing but respect to you grandad. X

    A man who was teaching me gunsmithing let me shoot his Boyes rifle. It was many years ago and the ammo was rare then. He had about 50 or so rounds for it and let me shoot 2 of them. I was 13 and weighed about 90 lbs. Me and the rifle were pushed back on the ground. I too didn't think the kick was bad. It was more like a heavy push than a sharp kick. We fired a total of three rounds that day and demolished an old chimney in the woods. The chimney was from a cabin that had burnt back in the 50s. My first round really cracked the chimney all over and a little fell. We moved to an angle about 65 degrees around. My teacher fired a round and the majority of the chimney fell. He let me fire again and about all that was left was a mess of old bricks. Great video and Memories!

      As one who has designed and fabricated some of my own projectiles that caught my attention. FYI - Tungsten is even slightly more dense than typical depleted uranium. (19.3 v 19.1 g/cc) Tungsten typically has greater hardness than steels so that might have been the additional benefit that they were looking for to go along with the higher velocity of the lighter projectile.

    Thanks for sharing Ian. Sir Roden Cutler, VC, former Governor of NSW and Honorary Colonel of my former Regiment, the Sydney University Regiment, earned his Victoria Cross as a young 2nd AIF officer firing the Boys against French Vichy tanks in Syria in 1941. He lost his leg in the same action. I had the honour of meeting him in my youth and he was still possessed of nerves of steel which one would need to fire such a weapon. His citation read as follows: “War Office, 28 November 1941.
    The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the VICTORIA CROSS to the under-mentioned:-
    Lieutenant Arthur Roden Cutler (NX.12378), Australian Military Forces.
    For most conspicuous and sustained gallantry during the Syrian Campaign and for outstanding bravery during the bitter fighting at Merdjayoun when this artillery officer became a byword amongst the forward troops with whom he worked.
    At Merdjayoun on the 19 June 1941 our infantry attack was checked after suffering heavy casualties from an enemy counter attack with tanks. Enemy machine gun fire swept the ground but Lieutenant Cutler with another artillery officer and a small party pushed on ahead of the infantry and established an outpost in a house. The telephone line was cut and he went out and mended this line under machine gun fire and returned to the house, from which enemy posts and a battery were successfully engaged.
    The enemy then attacked this outpost with infantry and tanks, killing the Bren gunner and mortally wounding the other officer. Lieutenant Cutler and another manned the anti-tank rifle and Bren gun and fought back driving the enemy infantry away. The tanks continued the attack, but under constant fire from the anti-tank rifle and Bren gun eventually withdrew. Lieutenant Cutler then personally supervised the evacuation of the wounded members of his party. Undaunted he pressed for a further advance. He had been ordered to establish an outpost from which he could register the only road by which the enemy transport could enter the town. With a small party of volunteers he pressed on until finally with one other he succeeded in establishing an outpost right in the town, which was occupied by the Foreign Legion, despite enemy machine gun fire which prevented our infantry from advancing.
    At this time Lieutenant Cutler knew the enemy were massing on his left for a counter attack and that he was in danger of being cut off. Nevertheless he carried out his task of registering the battery on the road and engaging enemy posts. The enemy counter attacked with infantry and tanks and he was cut off. He was forced to go to ground, but after dark succeeded in making his way through the enemy lines. His work in registering the only road by which enemy transport could enter the town was of vital importance and a big factor in the enemy's subsequent retreat.
    On the night of 23-24 June he was in charge of a 25-pounder sent forward into our forward defended localities to silence an enemy anti-tank gun and post which had held up our attack. This he did and next morning the recapture of Merdjayoun was completed.
    Later at Damour on 6 July when our forward infantry were pinned to the ground by heavy hostile machine gun fire Lieutenant Cutler, regardless of all danger, went to bring a line to his outpost when he was seriously wounded. Twenty-six hours elapsed before it was possible to rescue this officer, whose wound by this time had become septic necessitating the amputation of his leg.
    Throughout the Campaign this officer's courage was unparalleled and his work was a big factor in the recapture of Merdjayoun.”

    • @ThZuao
      @ThZuao 3 роки тому +5

      Not really tougher, but harder. That's not toughness as tungsten carbide is quite brittle. The outer shell serves also to cushion the blow and channel the penetrator into the armor in case it hits at an angle.
      Similar technology to contemporary Armor Piercing Composite-Rigid or High Velocity Armor Piercing tank rounds.

    • @kireta21
      @kireta21 3 роки тому +1

      Aye. Basic principle is that smaller penetrator will have smaller contact surface with armor, so will have to displace less steel to get through. But at same time, you want penetrator to be possibly heavy, so it can carry more kinetic energy. Steel surrounding penetrator (sabot) makes it fit bore of a normal sized gun. Obviously overall lighter round will gain more velocity while leaving the gun, so you want sabot to be possibly light. Later the design was improved by making sabot fall off penetrator right after leaving barrel, reducing air resistance that slows down penetrator.

    A while back I had a friend who was a 'Machine Shop' High School Teacher and he had his own Metal Lathe in his garage. He had gotten a surplus Browning M-2 Heavy Machine Gun Barrel and, through the MAGIC he taught the kids at Pulaski County High School, mated that 25-Lb BEAST to the receiver of an 1898 Mauser he'd gotten at a Yard Sale whose barrel had seen better days, so to speak. The Mauser's receiver ended up being bored out then tapped and the M-2 Barrel was spun down and threaded to where they mated beautifully; he went ahead and made a removable Muzzle Brake similar to what comes on a Barrett Light-50...
    I took my Springfield Armory SAR-48 (a Semi-automatic version of the FN-FAL chambered in .308 Winchester) to his rifle range one afternoon and he was there shooting the "Mauser from Hell" by unthreading the M-2 Barrel, dropping into the chamber an M-2 Cartridge, rethreading the Barrel into the Receiver, hefting the beast onto a Benchrest, working the Bolt-action to cock this Monstrosity then ever so gently pull the trigger... BAROOM!!!
    After he'd fired around 10 Rounds or so I asked, "Can I give it a try?" And he grinned then removed the Muzzle Brake so he could swab the bore. He then had me do the entire step-by-step routine of loading this creation of his and setting it up with a good, sharp aim at the Steel Plate Target cut out to look like a Rhinoceros at 50 Yards... BAROOM!!!
    Holy Mother of God - I was kicked back over 5 Feet off the stool as if I'd been hit in the shoulder with a Sledgehammer! He had NOT put the Muzzle Brake back on and, according to him, he just wanted to see how effective it truly was and unbeknownst to me I had volunteered for the experiment...
    To quote from a tale of being on Safari:
    "The Hunter fires both Barrels of his .460 Weatherby Magnum rifle at the charging Rhinoceros. The 4,000-pound Rhinoceros goes down and the 160-pound Hunter goes down. Whoever gets up first is the winner. If neither gets up, then the Hunter's belongings are distributed amongst the Tribal members of the Safari according to the Laws of the Serengeti."

    Thanks Ian for giving us a look at one of these. Remember reading somewhere the .55 cartridge had been considered for use in a machine gun. Someone may remember the details. Read a book recently on the battle of Milne Bay mentioning The Boys. The Aussie soldiers were sent out on a hit and run mission to meet the advancing Japanese. They were to be lightly armed, minimal rations to be carried, heavier weapons including their Boys AT rifles to be left behind. This made sense as this was to be a flanking manuvre involving climbing a jungle mountainside. Orders changed however. Instead they were to hold open parkland with next to no hard cover. Coming face to face in the dark with 2 type 95 HA-GO light tanks, they found their issued sticky bomb grenades to be totally useless. In the tropical climate they just did not stick. Having no option, they retreated to the jungle. Later, a small party left the base to set up a delaying ambush along the only road, the only option for tanks under the extremely muddy conditions. A soldier, inexperienced with the Boys, got away a couple of rounds at the lead type 95, to no noticeable effect. They left quickly as they were hotly pursued. One of the shots had in fact killed driver outright. A less skilled driver then took over, later hopelessly bogging the tank when he strayed from the narrow track. Both tanks were abandoned after the other suffered the same fate.
    A Browning .50 cal. note. The P-40 Kittyhawks the Australians operated from the island had the rifling completely eroded from the barrels due to lack of spares. Operating in the unimaginably filthy conditions even the ejection ports could be packed with mud. They resorted to taping them over. All the P-40s were flown out to an American base before nightfall as being overrun was likely. They returned to strafe the Japanese in the morning, as they did every morning. Thanks to our American friends who gifted them with new barrels so they could shoot straight again plus some much needed maintenance.
    Oh Ian, my father has never forgotten the hit a PIAT gives your shoulder when he fired one back in the 1950s.

Maybe not too surprising, though, given the weight of the gun itself.

So using i tungsten to increase the service life of the Boyes made sense in a way that it wouldn't for other nations.
