Hi Hakon,Sandor Konya was engaged at the Same time Franco Corelli was engaged with the Met in NY. They both shared many Roles at the Same Time. Konya was known to have a tremendous Repertoire on Roles from Puccini ( Cavaradossi,Rodolfo,Calaf ,Dick Johnson,Pinkerton) Verdi ( Richardo ,Radames,Carlo,)Donizetti( Edgardo) but also the French ( Hoffman ,Jose) as well as German Repertoire Max in Freischutz or Bachus in Ariadne.Most famouse for his Lohengrin where he sung 370+ Performances in 3 Languages all over the World( Check U Tube Lohengrin Bayreuth 1959-Konya-Grummer-von Matacic) Konya was the best paid Tenor at the Met of his time. He would be 100 years old on Sept.23rd2023
Very beautiful singing! I heard Sandor Konya with that Met on tour about this time -1967, I believe - and don't remember him singing quite so well.... nor had I remembered him as being quite so convincingly Italianate in sound, style, and phrasing...an altogether wonderful performance, in my opinion.
The mistake imho Bing made , as much as he appreciated Konya, was to not look at his time back in the 50‘s in Europe Konya sang in Manon all over Germany with great success Of cause different than Tucker or Bergonzi … but in a Gigli Style The Met had Tucker Bergonzi later on Domingo who where wonderful in the part Konya could have enhanced that Ymho
