Since the answer is 31, I immediately looked at the nearest square, 36, so 6² -5 would work. But then to make the second equation work, I immediately saw -6 would work while maintaining the first equation. I think the whole thing took me 5 seconds. It would have been harder if the most obvious first try hadn't worked.
