This model came out when I was 17 and I was in awe. I told myself then that I would have a Z one day and a few years later I did. I miss that car, it was truly awesome.
as an owner of a twin turbo 2+0 i'm dumbfounded by the "blindspots" he mentions... I was surprised when I bought mine how little blind spots it has, those little rear windows eliminate all the blindspots for me
I agree. Motorweek had a huge bias towards American made cars in the early 90's episodes. They seem to come full circle somewhere in the late 90's. What more could you could expect from a PBS program from Nowhere, Marlyland?
You know no matter how many times I watch this show I get blown away by the creativity of the staff periof the staff. The way they write things and film things after 40 plus years never gets old it's always fresh and when you look back on it it's still good stuff
there is a black one of these at my gym. I always take a minute to admire it. easily the best generation of the z/zx, and I'm glad to watch any reviews of these that you upload. thanks =)
oh yes... top of the list of Japanese cars for me! It has never gone out of style and a one of these in perfect condition still looks like a new car on the road today.
I was around when this new 300zx was released. These cars had nothing wrong with them except they where EXTREMELY EXSPENSIVE !!! especially for a non turbo coming in at 30k back in the early 90 's This was a really good looking car when it was released and still would look good today but they just couldn't get the price point where it should have been. The twin turbo was legitimately fast and that was in stock form. The Supra had the same pricing issues and that's what in my opinion killed them off.It was never an issue of looks or even performance it was just to expensive.
+Philip Koen I've actually never had a problem with the gas struts on any of my cars. I prefer the struts in fact. I think it makes the car look more expensive
+illstplaya So you prefer struts that you only see while the bonnet is open above a rod that will last the life of the car because it makes the car look more expensive? That is exactly what manufacturers want, they trick people with lots of unnecessary and impractical gimmicks that "look good and expensive" but ad no real value or comfort to the car and will not last. This is one of the reasons why some vehicles have such bad resale values, a lot of this "expensive looking" things are not working properly a few years down the line and it makes the car look worn out. A few night ago I stopped at a fuel station and there was this guy with his Audi checking oil or whatever with the bonnet propped up by a broomstick, the collapsed struts did not make the car look expensive but the stick made it look quite tired. I prefer things to work properly above "to look more expensive" A rod will last the life of the car while the struts will definitely not last the life of the car. Different strokes for different folks.
The 300ZX Twin Turbo came out when I was 5 years old. For many years, it was the car I wanted, but when the USA got the Evo VIII and WRX STI, my interests changed. I learned a great deal about cars from the May 1998 issue of Sport Compact Car, the title was "How to get 450 Horsepower From A 300ZX." I learned what a mass air sensor was, and it gave me an understanding about how computerized engines worked.
That car is so damn sexy to this day! I own a 370z but the 300 looks so good. I just did a sealant test on one of these in mint condition and they are so sexy in person!!! I love them:)
I absolutely love this generation of Z. Beautiful design inside and out. However, it's quite a time that we're in now when a Civic Touring with its turbo inline 4 is a second quicker to 60mph than this (non twin turbo) 300Z.
Could he reference the CORVETTE more in these reviews, lol? It's like he was born, lived, and died in corvettes, for 15 lifetimes. The seats are supportive... LIKE A CORVETTE The acceleration is thrilling... LIKE A CORVETTE my wife is frigid... LIKE A CORVETTE Next week we will compare a corvette with a corvette to see which corvette is the better corvette for you to corvette while corvetting!!!!!!
earnedmystripes I understand your point but it just comes down to being ignorant but it's true a lot of patriotic Americans didn't buy foreign cars because of the war.
If you look, one in this generation, (LEFT hand drive and either turbo or n/a)decent examples can be had for ten grand or less. Future classic for sure.
Even in 1989, the Z32 transmission was getting high praise. Though they kind of shot themselves in the foot with the whole "T-tops don't leak" comment. Lol.
This guy soundz as though he works for Chevy or some other American car company. He sucks as a reviewer for this beautiful and masterfully built sports car that is timeless and so fun to drive 27 years later. So fun that i have two Z32 tt's. :)
The z32 looks even better in the metal. It just doesn't seem to age. Many cars we liked in the 90s look hopelessly outdated today , except for this land mark design.
I’ve been binge watching loads of these old review clips. Great fun. I note they turn a consistent blind eye to crummy performance and build quality of many tacky old American cars, yet they chose to single out the less-than-revolutionary bonnet strut on the 300ZX. Tut tut! Shame on Nissan!
30,000? HA I got my NA for 500 because the owner just needed it gone asap and I got lucky. The car is super mint too. Best $500 I've ever spent in my life. Z's that are $3000+ are more beat up then mine.
$30,000 in 1990 is equivalent to over 60,000 today. Today in 2019 you can buy a loaded Honda Civic Turbo for 27,000 and get a faster car with much better fuel economy and much cheaper insurance. The Z might have been a great car back then, but its nice to see you get a lot more for your money nowadays.
Glad I held on to my 1994 300zx TT all these years. Wonder what it would be worth today?? 1 owner, all original right down to the wiper blades and tires!! Best part is that it's only got 19000 original Kms !! Any feed back or thoughts on what it would be worth is appreciated:)
I've seen faster acceleration times than this for the N/A. I know it's a good half second quicker to 60 and through the 1/4 mile. Obviously the TT was the one to get if you wanted real speed.
+hartsickdisciple There are so many variables, temperature, elevation, track condition, driver ability etc.. So, 9 times out of 10, you won't see a "best case scenario" acceleration time.... Still, 7.8 is nearly a full second off the best time I know of, so they must've had some pretty poor conditions at the track that day! Haha!
bliglum Bad driving for sure. 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are largely dependent on 60-foot (launch) times. Weather and other factors won't add up to more than a couple of tenths at most.
hartsickdisciple You're trying to say that if the same driver launched a car on a gravelly track, and a 95° day, at 6000 feet of elevation. It would only be 0.2 seconds slower than on a sticky track, with cool weather, at sea level? Not sure I agree with you there.
bliglum No respectable publication would do a performance test in the conditions that you mentioned. If they did, they would mention it in the test. Let's be reasonable here.
hartsickdisciple I dunno man, I just watched their 94' Mustang vs Camaro comparo where they had to throw the caveat that it was an especially hot day, there have also been times where they had to mention that their track was especially dusty. But they do what they can
Why would they, the C4 was obviously the """"better car"""" despite being 7 years older... GM was paying them. Motorweek was rigged in the late 80's early 90's.. That's the true price of PBS ('Public Broadcasting Service')
Not that weird if you develop a car for the Japan market then have to import to North America. In 1991 the z32 received an airbag. I think that's pretty common sense? NX was a 'kinda' different sentra chassis, give me a break.

What I find remarkable -- is that people currently crap on the Sentra SR Turbo.... When is offers roughly the same performance as this 300ZX (An SR Turbo with the manual runs the 1/4 mile in about 15.5).

Wow. $30K and more than a second slower to 60 than an SHO Taurus from the same year and no faster than tne BMW 325i. No wonder they listed the engine performance as a minus.
This model came out when I was 17 and I was in awe. I told myself then that I would have a Z one day and a few years later I did. I miss that car, it was truly awesome.
good thing you sold it when the "value" was so low. great sale!
I'm always thoroughly impressed with the driver who performs the slalom test. What a pro.
Still looks great to this day.
as an owner of a twin turbo 2+0 i'm dumbfounded by the "blindspots" he mentions...
I had a 91 Supra turbo and I always envied that car. Classic design.
I wanted all of those imports- 300z, Supra, 3000GT, RX7
I actually like the noise that the engine makes!!!
I still like this model rather then the 370z 350 for some reason
Me too.
The styling is better, that's why. Elegant rather than lumpish.
@@blisterbrain So elegant in fact, that Lamborghini borrowed the headlights for the Diablo.
You know no matter how many times I watch this show I get blown away by the creativity of the staff periof the staff. The way they write things and film things after 40 plus years never gets old it's always fresh and when you look back on it it's still good stuff
If the condition wasn't too bad, I'll still be happy to own a 90s 300ZX Twin turbo. One of my more memorable cars in my childhood from Gran Turismo.
It's a wonderful car, I own a 92' 2+2, every time I get in and drive it I smile like an idiot.
keep dreming
I love the interior. It looks really modern for it's time.
there is a black one of these at my gym. I always take a minute to admire it.
easily the best generation of the z/zx, and I'm glad to watch any reviews of these that you upload. thanks =)
I wanted one of these so bad back in High School. Nothing else looked like it.
oh yes... top of the list of Japanese cars for me! It has never gone out of style and a one of these in perfect condition still looks like a new car on the road today.
$30,000 in 1990 adjusted for inflation is $57151.72 in 2018.
the styling, still looks good today, if you can find a non molested one
best looking z car
Does a hell of a long 11 for not having much “low end power”.
Great car! Wish I could find one in good condition that’s mostly stock!
if you really wanted one that bad you'd find a way to buy one, trailer park man.
Pristine ones are still out there. I just bought a 90 NA Z32 yesterday with 73,000 miles on it, always garage kept and meticulously maintained.
This car reminds me of my childhood when my brothers had a Z31 and a Z32.
Well that settles it. I was ready to write a check until I saw the hood prop rod..........
I BADLY wanted one then, & I BADLY want one now!!!!!!!!!
My brother has a 1986 300ZX with a manual transmission.

This is my favor z all the time. Own 2z all 2+2... One auto and manual was fabulous and fun!!! Soon will own 2 seater twins turbo...!!!!
How do the NA autos Drive kind of on the heavy side
Complaining about the hood prop rod on this car?? He is not going to enjoy the future then...
Underpantsniper other than the prop rod and the seat belts, there's pretty much nothing wrong with this car! =)
+Underpantsniper
From all the cars I've worked on, I rather go with a cheap prop rod than those expensive gas shocks that only last a couple years.
+Garry Koalman Exactly, cannot agree more with you,. Nothing wrong with a rod, it will last forever while the gas struts ALWAYS collapse.
+Philip Koen I've actually never had a problem with the gas struts on any of my cars. I prefer the struts in fact. I think it makes the car look more expensive

True about the Z T-tops not leaking...mine never did either on my ‘84 Turbo...except in a pressure carwash I would get a small leak.

Wow, $30,000 for a 1990 300z. When adjusted for inflation, that's like $55,000 or so. A modern 370z starts at $30,000.
cadsux yeah and then they were like $50,000 new in 1996, probably like $80,000 in today’s currency
