- First opened in 1902, the Wellington Cable Car runs between Lambton Quay, in Central Wellington, and Kelburn, a suburb located in the hills above the city.
The Cable Car climbs 120 meters over a distance of just 612 meters, rising at an average gradient of 1 in 5, passing through 2 tunnels and over 3 bridges.
Despite being known as the "Cable Car", it is technically a Funicular Railway, as the two cars are permanently connected with a Steel Cable, rather then releasing and gripping to a constantly moving Cable as a real Cable Car does. The Term Cable Car comes from the original cars which ran from 1902 to 1978.
