  • We have shown in the past what we have been doing to get up the mast but we wanted to show you the gear that we are using and how to use it! We didn't know this was an option until talking a a rigger. #RockClimbing #Mast #Budget #Sailboat

For the ascender (Jumar) you could use an Alpine butterfly knot, safer easy to do and can take force from both directions. You just choose where to make it on the rope ... easy, safe

Climber use figure eight as a proper knot

  • @sadas672

Foot loop should go to top ascender
You tie jamar with figure eight
I highly recommend to buy Petzl GriGri or Grilon instead of lower rope grab device you use, or any device which are ascender and descender at the same time, it is very convenient, trust me 😊
Utilizing a second backup rope is a good thing too a specially if you are not experienced much

Hey man, nice video! I do a bit of work on ropes and might have some ideas for a quicker/safer ascent and descent. A couple things I would recommend- for going down, a “descender” device would be ideal to change over too so the toothed hand ascender doesn’t pick at the sheath of the rope when you move it down and avoids opening it. Also, a descender can be used to ascend if it is redirected above you with a device like that hand ascender with a pulley hooked in,feed your rope through that and then you can pull down on that and have mechanical advantage to pull yourself up, and then reset it higher as you go. Then for going down all you need to do is gently pull the descender handle and glide back down the rope. After removing the hand ascender. You can get the older version of a device called the Petzl Rig for just over $100 on Amazon. Would highly recomendable for that type of work. Just some thoughts. For rope access and rescue work people are always working on two lines (ropes), and then an attachment point to each rope. And a ascender is only considered a “half” of an attachment, (as it is connected into the harness) But in your case with the one rope, using a chest ascender hooked in, or a backup prusik hitch on the line that you slide up as you climb would complete one full attachment. Just some ideas and info. Looks like a ton of fun on the boat !

Great video. Easy to follow and see the setup. Curious if you’re able to get high enough above the mast head to work there.

Thanks glad you enjoyed it and yes it is set up to be able to reach the top of the mast and work on anything we need we just chose not to go all the way up because it was very windy that day!

What knot did you make the loop in the ascending rope with to attach the climber? a bowline?

Scary going aloft. I hate heights but I’m not strong enough to hoist John so need to find alternative options

Two comments. First your foot loop is too long.
Second you should have a second jumar ascender on a second line as a safety line attached to your harness, which will also keep you from swinging. You could also use a michoacan or prussik knot on the safety line instead of buying another ascender.

Yeah your right lol foot loop doesn't get any shorter kind of wierd, will probably order a double foot loop in the future. A secondary safety line is a good idea but personally find it hard to manage for me so just go off the one but it's a good thing to add for others

Well done. I have a similar set up. For safety put a lot of effort to cleating off the halyard twice on to cleats. On the behest of others I now go to the trouble of having a safety line but using a prusik hitch knot:

  • @cjacosta1

DANGER!!!! THIS IS WRONG!! You need to make some changes for your safety.
Your ascender is the only thing holding you up. You need to use a locking caribeaner on your ascender going to your harness. You can hook your harness to the top hole of the ascender (see below) It looked like you had a locker for your foot loop, which doesn't need one as its not life support. Won't hurt to have a locking one there.
You ABSOLUTELY need a caribeaner in the top hole of the asceneder once it's on the line. That is what keeps it locked on the line as you ascend. you could very easily flip the ascender off the line while ascending and even more likely while descending without this. If you choose to keep using the bottom hole of the ascender, you MUST add a caribeaner in the top hole.
