    To identify your fabric’s content, snip off a piece and burn one corner. If it’s smooth it’s cotton, if it melts into crispy bits, it’s got synthetic. 😊❤️

    I'm OBSESSED with that quilt block. Aside from one "fancy" project, I've only ever done basic square patchwork in my quilts, so I'm duly impressed. Here's to quilting in 2024! Well, here's to all the crafts in 2024!

    to find out if the fabric is polyester or not u need to burn a small piece of it. polyester melts and forms these smooth shiny clumps and it smells awful, like burned plastic (which it is). cotton on the other hand (and viscose and linen and other plant based fabrics) burns similar to paper and leaves behind very light and fragile ash; it smells like burned paper too. bonus info: wool when burned behaves like a mix between polyester and cotton as in it melts a bit but it also crumbles and it reeks of burned hair. the other big difference is that cotton doesn't get static and it absorbs water better

    I'm sitting in front of a fire, drinking a glass of red wine, and watching a fabric haul getting inspirations.
    This is the cozy evening I've been needing! Super excited to see how your quilt comes along. I love hearing about people in the Southern Hemisphere talk about getting ready for autumn as those of us in the N. Hemisphere are anticipating spring. Someday it would be so fun to travel and experience fall in a time when it's spring in my home.

    For the lace curtain, you could try to do a burn test. You can look t up. It is not an exact science, but it would give you an idea what the contents are. Fabric dye for cotton won't work on polyester (a bit on nylon/polyamid), but I'm guessing the other way around will work. So if it is a blend, go for the polyester dye.

  • @tashinalee6146
    @tashinalee6146 4 місяці тому

    If you're in doubt, just use the dye more for synthetic. It should dye cotton too

    I appreciate you mentioned you'd hack one of your own patterns for your corduroy pinafore but the idea you spoke about made me think straight away of the Soften Studios Ora Pinafore in case you had thought about buying a pattern for that, or even just looking at some inspo for outfits with a pinafore with that silhouette. I'm super into corduory at the moment, I've bought quite a few pieces for my sash with a beautiful autumn/winter smock dress in mind, and most likely a tiered midi skirt and possibly a shorter, more fitted pinafore as well. I'm usually such a big summer person but I've been finding myself excited for autumn this year and excited to start sewing clothes for the cooler months. Looking forward to seeing more about your new skirt pattern when it's ready too!

    Most modern table cloths are a polyester which probably resist staining more than cotton. Many times you can tell by the feel. Polyester does not pick up dye. I tried to dye some lace and it turned out to be polyester and would not hold the dye. If that turns out to be the issue , I would use it as the colors that it is or it is such a gorgeous cloth, you could use it over another fabric on a bed as a spread. I have done this and it is quite attractive.

    I get so inspired by your sewing plans! Love all the details you share. Can't wait to see how it all turns out! I LOVE the corduroys you picked! One thing I wonder about--I find corduroy tends to stick to tights when I walk and rides up if it is a skirt. But that skirt pattern you are creating may help that problem since its quite flared. Anxious to see that pattern made up!

    Hi Janellet The best dyes that dye fibre combinations are Rit or Dylon. Spotlight have Dylon dyes and the big supermarkets have Rit. One word of warning is to set the dye properly in the fabric. You can have a special setting chemical or use salt, vinegar or soda ash. Kraft colour in Victoria is a good company to look up, as they supply all kinds of dyes to artist - crafts people - they have technical info as well. The people who run it have been doing so for a long time. I am a textile artist so I am familiar with processes having made some boo boos in the past.

    @Sarana. 4 місяці тому

    As a Finnish person I feel necessary to point out that Projekti Tyyny classifies itself as a ‘Nordic’ brand, but if anything it is Finnish, not Swedish and us Finns are tired of Swedes always getting the credit for everything good that we do 😭 The name itself stands for ´Project Pillow´and with all my love you absolutely butchered the pronunciation, but I understand as Finnish is quite different from other languages😅. I think the first step which will help you is recognising the two separate words projekti and tyyny. The J in projekti is soft, similar to how the letter Y is pronounced in English, otherwise it’s close enough. The letter Y in tyyny is harder to explain, but it is similar to the “ew” sound in English like in the word new, but because it’s a double vowel it makes a long sound. I don’t know if this makes any sense but you might try saying “proyekti tewewnew” and get somewhat more correct. Regardless I love their products and you’ve chosen some lovely fabrics for your quilt! Overall all your Autumn projects seem lovely, though again to a Finnish person they look very much like summer sewing plans 😂
