I re-finished SC + BW a few weeks ago and this is the mission I remember as being the hardest. I think it's harder than Omega, plus it's more interesting and requires more thinking. Amazing job as always Stu!
i tried to beat the original starcraft and bw campaigns last summer and could never do it so i just gave up. came back to it today and finally beat to slay the beast. thanks bro much love
Kerrigan- "Now that the Matriarch Raszagal is in my custody, I possess the means to attack the Overmind with impunity." Duran- "But my Queen, I thought only the Dark Templar's energies could harm the Overmind and its cerebrates." Kerrigan- "Dude, I literally just said I have a Dark Templar..... but yeah I am going to get some others to do this."
This mission was hard indeed. Need to take out the bases on the right from your base and top left of your map as quickly as possible or you get eventualy overwhelmed, the fact that economy is shit throughout all the game doesn't make things any easier it also becomes difficult to counter theur guardians valkiries, devourers and eventual battle cruisers as well.
True, this was actually harder than the last mission as a 7 year old. I wasnt able to read English back then, cant forget the moment when I found out that I had to slay the overmind with the dark templar.
Used to do this on almost every Zerg mission as a kid/teen. Now that I'm in my 30s, I've lost the patience to use this strategy. His Speedrun looks about as doable as the next level's Nydus Canal strategy. I just don't ever use Defilers much. I think I'll send over 2 if I do this strategy - looked like he almost lost it before it dark swarmed the Overmind.
I had to start reading around to figure out if it was just me finding this one incredibly difficult. The challenge isn't so much the bases on the island you start on but the insane volume of Overlord drops the computer can coordinate ridiculously easily. Even Scourge aren't that bright, so you tend to have to micro them so they don't waste themselves. I think Devourers are critical in slowing down the Valkyries - get a full squad and I think you can one shot Valks, and light up Wraiths. I would try and clear your immediate area, then take the white top centre base, then you can go all the way to the far right bottom corner, take out lurkers and establish a base there so you Nydus over whatever ground troops you have. Use high ground to protect Guardians from Goliaths etc. It's a really tough one...
Ah so what you did on this speedrun was soften it up with Ultras but as long as a dark templar gets a blade hit on it Zeratul will jump in? Very clever use of the Defiler. I wonder if plague would work too?
The zerg/ terran mixed attack waves were really cool and well designed. To Chain the Beast/ To Slay the Beast were two really well designed and though out missions.
Played this bullshit fuckin level for probably 5 hours. This final try has been going for an hour and I was stuck on a save where they came at me with all siege tanks and guardians and there was nothing I could do. I hail mary'd this walkthrough beat the level and fucking kerrigan wont come out of the overlord 10/10 Best game ever
I HATED this mission. EMPs plus Ensnare and Plague, on top of Medics blinding every unit you have, with Battlecruisers escorted by Devourers and D-Matrixed Guardians? Gahd dayum.
Yeah I do hate this shit too. Instead of doing something interesting, Brood War makes you go through the missions where u simply outnumbered and suffer from the lack of literally everything. U can't zergling-rush enemy bases or sent ultralisks - there r siege tanks and lurkers. U can't rush it with mutalisks (ma fav) coz there r tons of Goliaths and Hydralisks. How is that possible? Lol because enemy got tons of bases, tons of resources and hordes of units and u simply don't. Brood War is a piece of shit, worst game DLC Humanity ever saw. IMO the only good thing there is Alexei Stukov. What is that crap with storyline? Protoss help Kerrigan? W h a t? U dumb asses lost Ayur ur Khala-piece-of-shit says zerg is ur enemy no. 1 Aaaand? Those shithead co-operate with Kerrigan. Meh I do, do do hate this DLC.
Took me like 2 hours to finish this mission, 98 casualties and over a 1000 kills (stat counter can't pass more than 999), wiped the entire map, but i wish knew this shortcut
thank you Stu thanks to your strat I finally finished this shitty mission which took me a lot of time to finish it: thank you to you for the help of your strat.
This mission it’s really a pain in the ass. I have many days trying, but i think finally got it. There are only two bases left to destroy. After 1.30 hours playing xd
I tried to wipe the map and mined everything out on this map. Saved with a flock of like 50 mutas and 12 guardians. saved after wiping the island base, and mustve tried to bust straight to the overmind from center top with that air force like 10 times before i thought to check the lower right corner of the map... Just figured they were entrenched on the whole right side. Talk about 'doh...'
Only those cape wearing dark Protoss can kill the overmind and its cerebrates. Also Zerg and cape wearing templars against a Zerg swarm and momma sized UED battlecruisers? That’s not going to be easy.
That's not how I would imagine the mission canonically playing out. I see this mission as the showdown between the UED and Kerrigan. A full no holds barred conventionnal battle. The UED has to be broken after this battle (they lose most of their fleet there) which is why I imagine Kerrigan destroying all of their bases in this battle, not just focusing the Overmind.
Yeah this is probably the cheesiest strategy I used, but any more conventional strategy (probably hydras + guardians) would have taken a lot longer. I like to think that Kerrigan just wanted to take out the overmind ASAP and then cleaned up the rest at her leisure.
@@StuGames I see we have different interpretations of how this battle played out, but fair enough :D This is a speedrun anyway, so I dont blame you for being fast!
That's an interesting idea, but conversely once the Overmind is Yamcha'd Kerrigan either inherits all of the Zerg under U.E.D control or they simply turn feral and run amok amongst their former U.E.D allies. Turning Zerg messiah into beef jerky asap might be the way to go.
@@sachavykos3206 You do have a point. It's true Kerrigan would be devious enough to think like you. I guess the map just has a critical flaw that allows such a strategy. The south should've been more fortified for it to be less cheesesable.
Again, very hazardous since attacking waves are pretty random and so are the defensive layers. For some reason, the Ultralisks go wild, disobey and get killed very fast (full-boosted) by many tanks and ships.
This series is nice I was curious when orange comes with valkyries devourers and guardians is guardians and devourers good comp? I’m trying it out and sometimes is harder then predicted
@@StuGames thanks I like to try it in different ways sometimes the big load of guardians and valkyries is like a swarm I’m still figuring out what to do when a wave is bigger then expected
I tried rushing top left (tanks kill me) , i tried Guardians hit n run resource war of attrition against the East Zerg camp but they create too much units. i tried ONLY Zergling rush early vs East Zerg (worked but then they brought in Lurkers from other island and they slaughtered my Zerglings. and now i'm looking at UA-cam (guess imma just copy pasta this strat).
omg i thought this was the last zerg mission... very dissapointing... however i tried your strategy with a safe right before the attack a few times and it worked, you are just very good moving along your troops binding keys, i just try not to take much damage and this creature with the spell to keep it alive..... but i made it, im getting used to your strategies i dont bother any other way, its too complicated
I also thought this was the final mission XD, since 2018 I tried to beat it but have been giving up. Made an easier version of the map where they start with 2000 minerals instead of 75000 each and it turned out to be very easy, At some point between 2000 and 75000 minerals for the CPU the mission should be fair!
Impossible for me. Here are hotkeys used to select units of a specific type, which apparently is not supported officially. And on a Laptop with bad touch sensitivity and without real mouse buttons, the reactions are too slow. And even if I manage to get to the overmind, the fog somehow does not work, and all my last ultralisks and templars die. I find this mission too difficult, imbalanced compared to all previous missions. Here I see a good justification to cheat to get to the next mission, and at least enjoy the last bit of story. Tried also other savegames to wipe the other colonies, but at the end I get overwhelmed. I want to finish this game finally.
Are you playing the mac version of the game? Because selecting all units (up to 12) of the same type on the screen can be achieved by double click on the unit or Ctrl+Click You can also save the units in a control group (Ctrl+number when you have units selected, or Shift+number to add selected unit to that group) and recall them by pressing that number (up to 10 groups from 0~9). Also, when a control group of units are selected, you can press Ctrl+Click on the wireframe to select all units of that unit type within the control group, or Ctrl+Shift+Click to deselect that unit type. If you cannot do the shortcut you can try to destroy land bases with DT and hydras. Because the DTs have max upgrades at the start of this mission they are extremely powerful and can tank quite a bit (you can have up to 8, make sure you don't lose the protoss buildings in your base). Once you have 4 bases you can max out and destroy everything with relative ease. Build more hatcheries if you can't seem to spend your resource fast enough.
Yes, that makes sense, but I prefer to beat them fair and square. Ok, mostly square, but not this cheese. Omega is a hell though. I hate the Protoss there.
I just finished the omega mission. 1 batch each of guardian, devourer and muta. Took down protoss first for dropping a reaver on my base. The nuking Terran was the annoying one for me
Interesting approach, this becomes quickly in a battle of attrition, and you end without resources fast, i best it with resources cheats, nothing im proud of but i got annoyed.
Just beat this level, so proud of myself because this level was seriously insane.
Fr. UED units were literally spawning
Lol I'm playing through this rn and lost 4 hrs xD
This and OMEGA missions are one of the hardest play I ever encounter in Starcraft. It totally test my brain to the limit.

I know right? You have a limited amount of time to build defenses for the arial attacks after you destroy both 2 bases.

i went the same, as a result i got all the valkyries + Queen's Ensnare got me fukd lol
The only thing this mission was missing was having the Zerg turning on the Terrans at the very end.
True, but since they already did that on Fury of the Swarm, it might have been overkill to show that again.

The Overmind has 2500 HP and a plague does 295 damage, so it would take 9 plagues!
@StuGames Did I just misread the whole thing, you do have to use your own dark templar and not rely on Zeratul?
This admittedly should have been the final mission of Brood War. Not only was it the most difficult, but also the most interesting and well-balanced.
The zerg/ terran mixed attack waves were really cool and well designed. To Chain the Beast/ To Slay the Beast were two really well designed and though out missions.
Yeah. Just have it end with Zeratul killing Raszagal and then have Dark Origin as an after credits mission.
Yeah even as a kid I always felt the final two missions of the Zerg campaign in Brood War felt superfluous.
@@PokemonHaloFan Omega simply isn't an engaging concept. Out of left field, we have to fight three standard enemies and that is it.
