WHAT IT’S LIKE LIVING ON DEATH ROW

  • In this video, we are talking about what it’s like to live on death row. The average stay on death row before execution is approximately 19 years. Inmates don’t know their execution date until 30 days before they are to be executed. They live in isolation, dark dirty, living conditions, and the constant anxiety of not knowing when they will be put to death.
I have never been sentenced to the death penalty, but I did stay in the same housing unit that was used for death row for decades at OSP, while it was being used for overflow for solitary confinement.

In Japan, death row inmates dont know when their execution date is, so every morning could be their last.

I work at a female unit that houses our death row. It can be depressing working in there. So I can’t imagine being the person living on death row.

How long a day does max do? Here in Australia maximum inmates get 1-4 hours a day out of cell.

@@aussiedanjones I know in Florida death row, they get either morning dayroom or afternoon dayroom, and once a week, they get a full day of dayroom. Each half day is either 4-5 hours. That's Monday through Friday. Saturday and Sunday they are on lockdown.

Just came across this, and I just wanted to say that I hope you're doing well! I was hooked on heroin for over a decade, and now I'm coming up on my four years clean. I just wanted to say that because, if someone like me can get clean, you got this! It is extremely difficult for the first while, I won't lie to you, but it is so, so worth it. I can't even tell you how much life has improved for me. Even going through an accident that left me disabled at the end of last year, I'm still much happier this way than I ever was when I was getting high. I hope you're doing well, and I hope that you can read this and get that little extra bit of hope and strength to get through it. If you ever need someone to talk to, I am a sponsor for NA, so please feel free to hit me up!

Hi, I’m a 58 year young lady and yes I have a beautiful granddaughter and 2 grown up sons in their 30’s.
I just wanted to say that I have been sat here at home, listening to you, and I didn’t even know that my jaw was hanging open because I was so interested in what you had to say. I live in the UK and find your channel so interesting and I learn a lot from you. You pull people into your stories , sometimes they are very funny, sometimes extremely interesting, and other times pretty scary. Thank you for sharing your story and your recovery from drugs. Twenty years being an addict is awful when you realise the years you have thrown away. But you are clean now and I’m so happy for you and Jax. I know your future is bright and full of possibilities. I’m sending you both love, health, wealth and happiness. Forward Spartan- never go back.

The way you say daily recovery, it helps reinforce to me that I’m always going to be in recovery. Everyone tells me that the voice that tells you to use never goes away, and you can’t give in for even a second or else you’ll fall all the way back down. It hurts real bad sometimes, but it helps to remember that I’m not recovered, I’m recovering. I’m in a process and that mean for all that things can get worse, they can get better too.

Hey JD, I was driving along listening to this and I had to pullover and comment.
What you were describing regarding the mental and physical damage that people on death row experience, instantly made me think of my best friends Mother.
This is exactly what i have had to witness from one of the most sweetest, kindest, funniest and loving Mum's I've ever known.
Except her reasons for experiencing this kind of damage to both her mental and physical health was different.
My best friend was brutally, heinously, tortured and murdered.
To this day, about 13yrs later her Mum has NEVER recovered. Not just the loss, but not even being able to recognise her own daughter at the morgue. It was only from a piece of jewellery she had on, that she could ID her.
I won't go into all the injuries she suffered, but here are a few......60 stab wounds to her head, her jaw was disconnected from her spine, ruptured spleen, lungs, beaten with a metal rod, A/C pulled off of a wall to be used to smash on her 110lbs, 5ft1in petite body, an iron heated up to press into her body, a fire to burn evidence.
As I said that was just a small list of what my dear, sweet friend suffered over a 1.5hr to 2hr attack.
Not to mention having to go to trial and see this stranger, who my sister was insulted by, as he smugly sat in the dock, with NO REMORSE.
Then he pled guilty. Which ppl automatically think is "sparing the victims family". Well for us it wasn't, we had prepared for months to face this murderer in court, and defend our beautiful girl.
In Australia, pleading guilty(the prosecution had a rock solid case, they didn't need or want a guilty plea. They had conclusive evidence, that would have easily secured us a guilty verdict.), automatically lessens your sentence. He didn't do it from a place of remorse, but to garner 4 years of his sentence.
At the end of trial, he was sentenced to 23yrs, minus 4yrs, knocking it down to 19yrs. So in 6yrs(or less for good behaviour), he will be free.
My friends parents will still be alive, her brother and all of her friends will have to live through another gut punch.
So I'm 💯 not into torturing ppl on death row for the sake of it, but WE must never forget the victims and the familys that continue to suffer way after a death, life, time in prison sentence.
Here's a link to a report about my friend.

OMG Sis. That’s fucking horrific. I’m so sorry for your loss, and her family. To clarify, I don’t think people who treat others inhumanly deserve humane treatment. I just don’t see the point in keeping the trash around. End it. End it before we’ve invested hundreds of thousands into keeping them alive.

@@JdDelay5150 Thanks, bro. I appreciate that. I totally understand where you're coming from.
THB, if they brought back capital punishment in Oz, I wouldn't be mad.
Though my 2 biggest things I would want fixed is.
      1. All crimes towards kids, women, disabled, elderly and innocent bystanders should be dealt a harsher sentence.. Also, as a society, we must accept that paedophilia isn't curable. Their has to be a zero tolerance towards these crimes. One minor having to experience the catastrophic damage of CSA is one child too many. It's guaranteed to affect a child in every aspect of their life moving forward. So, one strike and a paedophile should lose their ability to ever be a part of society again. Whether that means building segregated, isolated structures or the DP, IDK?? Though we all know a chomo doesn't statistically do it one time, get caught, does time, and never reoffends. It's time to stand up and protect our kids.
      2. Most crimes involving drugs and/or mental health should be looked at individually. Decriminalising some elements of drugs could be a good way to intervene and create a point of contact for possible rehabilitation, education, and support. Imprisoning addicts/mentally ill will NEVER get to the crust on the issues.
More funding needs to go into stopping the war on drugs and healing those gripped by these issues.
I'm nowhere near having the solutions, but I wish the government had their priorities right, not their bank accounts🤷‍♀️

I'm so sorry for what your friend suffered, and the injustice of the sentencing. Do they not have the death penalty there? Why was this person given such a light sentence, when torture was involved? I'm so sorry to hear this outcome, and what her poor mother must endure, knowing her killer will one day be a free man. My heart goes out to you and her family. This truly breaks my heart.

    • @Cynthiabecker24
      @Cynthiabecker24 6 місяців тому +3

@Weld24_CosmicKat Thank you. No, we don't have the death penalty in Australia. I honestly never understood how his sentence was so lenient.
Our legal system(like many others globally) needs a massive overhaul.
My friends parents sued the Victorian(a state in Australia ) corrections, as her murderer was on bail when this occurred. We found out he had breached his bail 3 times(the last breach being a home invasion, where he tied up and elderly couple and beat and robbed them). So technically, he should have been in custody. Had corrections done their job. My friend would not have been murdered by him.
The law(Elsa's Law) was changed, making the procedure when bail is breached, a smoother procedure.
The state was found liable, and the family received money. They started an orphanage in Africa for children who are raped and left pregnant, traumatised, discarded, medically injured, or unwanted by their families)
They continue to lobby the government for harsher sentencing, along with myself and many family and friends. It's a very tough thing to achieve, but to do nothing feels worse.
I pray that in my lifetime, I will see sentencing reflective of the crime.
Much love for commenting, I really appreciate it.💙🙏

@@JdDelay5150 its a good idea. problem is the justice system is *Heavily* flawed...like flawed to its core. there is something like 10% 15% of people on D.R who are innocent or suspected of being innocent. and they dont get that chance for a long time to prove that because those cases are never really closed. or if they are...ten plus years later new evidence pops up which reopens the case. in fact there have been a few cases where the criminal is put to death and a few years later new evidence is found and the person is cleared...too little too late. but thats the justice system. its not to fix people, its not to give out justice, its not to right the wrongs. thats gods job and his alone. human justice is meant to do protect the rich and control the poor.

I work for a DOC contractor in La. We work on the inmates kiosks, phones, wifi, and Android tablets.
We service every unit, dorm, cell block, etc.
Im in Deathrow at least twice a month, sometimes more.
Its an awkward situation and I usually wait for them to start a conversation. Ill greet them but never ask them how theyre doing. The conversation is usually about the tablet or the kiosk. I do my best to help them with their issues. Theyre usually happy to see us. Not always though.
Theyre let out once a day and usually get to shoot basketball if the weather is nice. Most are usually in good spirit. Idk how.
Im happy when I run into someone getting out. Truly happy for them.
Most that go to Angola die in Angola.
Theres some good people in there. And some of them absolutely belong there.
I visited the death chamber when I first started. It felt just like you imagine it would feel.
Tbh, Angola is the most chilled facility compared to the others here. It doesn't have all of the young trouble makers like the smaller facilities I work.
7000 inmates are held there. It wasnt always like it is now. A former warden turned the place around about a decade ago.
Its easy to get comfortable around them but, which isnt good. I have tool boxes with me at all times. I leave all judgement at home when I go to work. You have to.
I met the Bayou Strangler. Even worked in his tablet. He's not on Death Row, btw.
Look him up. He's a short chubby troll. You would look at jim and wonder how he did what he did.

I would solve the problem of waiting years on death row by abolishing death row completely. The death penalty is and always has been very unfairly applied. Occasionally innocent people fall victim to it, even today.
First degree aggravated murder should carry a sentence of death in prison by _natural causes._

The needle is one of the worse way to execute a person. Mainly because no doctor or anyone who knows how to do it won't. Which mean unproffessionels do it and there has been case of this taking 8 hours before the prisoner died, because of incompentence. One guy was stabbed through the ballsack. Another one is that the ingestion has 3 compones 1 that paralyses you, 1 that put you to sleep (but rarely works) and the 3 stoppes your heart (but because the executioner can't help themself from stabben throung the blood vessel it just burns their muscles instead.
If you can choose your execution go with the firing sqaured as that is the most likely to not fail

In March of 2023 I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. I had to come to terms with dying. To be ok with what I had done with my life at that time. I had about a month to do all this. I was going in for surgery to remove my primary tumor and test my lymph nodes to check if and how much the cancer had spread. Stanford restaged me at 2B. My cancer reoccurred 3 times. Every time I “got through it” I was mad. That sounds strange I know but think about it. I had prepared myself to die. I didn’t consider what would I do if I lived on. With the reoccurrences I will never be considered “cured.” My cancer technically has metastasized to other parts of my abdominal cavity. I get it. I understand the feeling of staring down the barrel of death knowing I will die but the question is when. I have been ok for 7 years but still going in every 6 month for scans to check for cancer. I feel comfortable while going through treatment. I’ve been stumbling through life after treatment trying to figure out how to readjust. I’m doing better with this. I still am ready. I’m not afraid to die. It’s not depression or suicidal tendencies but instead it’s acceptance. I had to face my own mortality.

11:15 That's because death row inmates are going through their appeals, which on average take about 20 years. Once all appeals have been exhausted, an executive figure-whether it's the Governor, the Secretary of Corrections, or a judicial authority like the Trial Court, Criminal Appellate Court, or even the State's Supreme Court-issues a writ known as an execution warrant or 'black warrant.' This warrant authorizes the execution for a specified date and time. You can check the DPIC to see pending death warrants or upcoming executions.

I knew someone who was a CO at a big boy facility, he mainly worked deathrow/PC/solitary and he said solitary was the scariest sketchiest areas because you could never know what to expect once someone had finally snapped. It's super inhumane and extremely unsafe situation for COs that had little-to-no deescalation and mental health training.

Hey JD. I was wondering what are your thought on "dry snitching". Like if your boss asks your team who did something that's against policy and only you and one other person work on that task and you say it wasn't you. People say that's " dry switching" as that indirectly say it was the other person. But in that case what is the proper way to handle that? Take the blame for something you didn't do? What if the boss says if nobody takes ownership they will punish the whole team?
P.s. in these scenarios the boss is directly asking each person who did it as a direct question not a question to the team as a whole. So it's weird to not respond to a direct question from your boss.

Ive been trying though, to limit my UA-cam time, i can get engrossed in watching to the point of neglecting all else, now that i don't have any really structured time. Have you ever done an episode on the fare they feed you in prison. I am curious to know what the nature of the foodstuffs they feed you is. I heard most comes from donations, or sometimes what is grown at lower security facilities. I believe at Orange County, Ca, where i was housed at the women's jail, a lot of food came from the honor farm. At least that's what i was told by other inmates there.
