  • Aquatics expert Tom Sarac provides an in-depth overview of a beautiful South American characin - the Rummy-nose Tetra!
    Check out the Fluval Colombia expedition: • NEW FISH DISCOVERED! F...
    Originating from Venezuela and Brazil, H. rhodostomus is hardy, striking, and suitable for biotope and planted aquariums! Like most other small tetras, it does best when kept in groups of its own kind, and is compatible with other peaceful South American fish. It prefers to be kept in warm, soft, acidic water, and is an unfussy feeder, although a varied diet that includes live foods will promote the best condition and coloration in the fish. The Rummy-nose Tetra is high on our list of species everyone should keep at least once!

    I have been so much in love with this fish lately. Can I keep them in 20 gallon cubical tank?

      Hi! 👋 As Tom mentions in the video, Rummy-nose Tetras are best kept in tanks that are at least 30" - 36" in length.

    Great video and info. I’ll be adding a dozen to my community tank soon. They should do fine with Cardinal tetras? etc

    In my experience there is little bit of confusion about Rummy-nose Tetras in hobby - some of them may be in fact the Hemmigramus rhodostomus, but very often under this name the Hemigrammus bleheri may be sold, or even a hybrids between two of them. And there is also 'false Rummy-nose', Petitella georgiae which is easiest to distinguish due to lack of second dark blotch at the bottom of the caudal peduncle - but still, if you type this name in search engine you'll get images of all three species described as Petitella georgiae... Anyway, looking at the fish in video above - I can see some specimens with red coloration reach behind the gills covers, which suggest that in fact they may be the H. bleheri, or hybrids... I have a shoal of true H.bleheri in my Amazon tank with few species of corys, some L-numbers and beautifull, big Silver Dollar group and they are lovely fish - in fact I am planning to set a biotope tank and try to breed them soon.

      Hi Max, you're absolutely correct - there is indeed some confusion in the hobby, and species of Rummy-nose Tetras are often misidentified. For the purposes of this video, which seeks simply to introduce the species and give general care tips, we decided to not get too bogged down in the taxonomical specifics!

      @@fluval Yeah, I have no problem with this - IMHO any species of 'Rummy-Nose-like Tetra' will do great job in any tank: in large biotope-like aquarium one or two dozens of them will form separate group among other tetras, in species-only tank even bigger group will looks fantastic with that synchronized movement and beautiful, contrast coloration if only water parameters will suits them. A great fish indeed...

    The rummy nose tetras are very attractive. I’m starting a 10 gallon tank where a betta will be the star. Could I have a small school (maybe 6-8) rummy nose tetras in the tank with him?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  Місяць тому +1

      Hi there! Unfortunately not - rummy-nose tetras need much larger aquariums, and aren't good tankmates for bettas!

    Aren't you showing H. bleheri at 0.10? And at least some of the video sequences.
