vet tech here… you don’t put your dog on antibiotics every time you express their glands. if there’s an infection you’ll definitely know about it.
Thanks for your input but I personally do it, and never had a issue when you express a dogs anal glands 3/4 times a year antiboitcis shouldn’t do any harm to the animal and why take the risk, when you don’t know if the dogs anal glands are infected from expressing them ? You can’t see them so why risk it
@@cinemabullyznj3394 feeding antibiotics when there is absolutely no infection to treat will cause resistance to said antibiotics meaning that if the dog gets actual infection antibiotics wont be as effective or wont work at all. Antibiotics are not candy.
I agree. Especially putting dogs on antibiotics 4x per year. That is absolutely wild. If there's no infection, there is no need for antibiotics.
@@cinemabullyznj3394overuse of antibiotics is why we have so many diseases/infections now that don’t respond to antibiotics. Unnecessarily giving them is super unhealthy in general.
I agree too. Why the hell would you use antibiotics without an infection? Do you not realize you cause serious gut dysbiosis and future health issues? Anal glands are only infected if there's blood and in a lot of cases its actually a food allergy causing it.

No need for Cefalexin, but if you suspect your dog has an anal gland abscess do not do this and take them to the Vet.
Ok if you say so works for me and if you wanna get more technical clavamox is what vets usually prescribe which you can give your dog Augmentin and it’s the same thing 👍🏼
I've done this and it squirted on my lips. I could smell it for an hour afterwards. Even after I showered. My dog didn't like it too much. She kept trying to smell it where it landed outside. I've gotten a lot better and more efficient at doing this procedure. Even my dog is sort of used to it. Sort of.

I have had dogs my entire life and I have never once done this. They’ve all lived longer than normal lives and one even lived to 23 before he just never woke up one day.

I didn’t know about it either owning dogs growing up my whole life however some dogs can’t pop them on their own or it will get so bad it starts leaking and smells horrible!! My friends dog he has to take and get this done like once a month or something otherwise his dogs butt will literally drip that nasty shit and it smells horrendous.

Do you think is safe to give the dog some pills to make it sleep or relax before doing the express glands? My dog doesn't like it at all, and sometimes it tries to bite me as a signal of discomfort. So what should I do?
You can try
Your dog won't bite you. Be the top dog. We don't enjoy everything that's good for us but persevere and you'll both come out the other side all the better for it. The problem with pills to calm them down is it can make a bigger problem down the line .

40 years of owning dogs and I only had this issue with my first. If your dog consumes enough fiber this doesn't happen.

I have a love for big dogs; Rottweilers and Mastiffs, but I was guilted to take this chihuahua that my friend rescued. Nobody warned me, that he would be the meanest dog in my pack, and require regular anal gland expressing. Never again. Chihuahua is a bad word in my house.

I think not teaching tiny dogs some manners is cruel. Let the poor dog know it isn't his job to be alpha of the pack. He can stand down and not yap himself into fury. I've met a couple that were the sweetest little things. They knew they weren't the boss of it all and were relaxed playful. It's that snapping frenzy that folks think is so cute or funny or something that is an anxious dog displaying stressed behavior. You wouldn't allow a larger dog to act like that, to get stressed like that and think it was cute. It's not cute. It's sick.

Vet here. You absolutely should NOT put a dog on antibiotics without infection. There is harm as you are putting your dog at risk of developing intestinal dysbiosis or creating a multi drug resistant bacteria. Not to mention you are practicing medicine without a license. How do you know what dose or duration of antibiotic if there is no infection?? How do you know cephalexin is the appropriate antibiotic for this imaginary infection
Well anal gland that are getting expelled can cause a infection and the fact they are not getting relieved also builds up infection, but congrats you know absolutely nothing when it comes to dogs or relieving anal glands, and a VET most of the vets I know don’t know shit just like saying spaying your dogs is good for your dog right? And neutering your male dogs is good for them right? Money hungry scumbags that use your pets as leverage for money to fill your pockets not for the love of the animals, where are you a vet at so I can find out more about you and your practice ?

Youre welcome. I have a GSD that gets bad bacterial infections on his skin. Sometimes the bacteria is resistant to various antibiotics. It gets expensive when we have to get the fancy antibiotics. I fully get why you throw antibiotics at it-you've obviously been through it! We love our dogs❤☺️

But I’ve owned over several dogs in my lifetime and only had 1 with this issue. Persistence is key and you can get it done. Get someone to help you hold him/her and try your best. Do what you think is best for them.

I hadn’t even heard of anal gland expression until recently, and now I have a tiny Maltese (~2 years old) whose anus is so small that I’m afraid of squeezing too hard and damaging something. Is this kind of expression necessary, and if so, any tips?
i usually do this to my dogs when I’m bathing them. It’s gross but has to be done. then I wash their bum and hands with soap 🧼 and rinse 🚿
