  • I have been a veterinary technician for the last 18 years. Manual expression is usually needed when a dog cannot naturally express it on their own. Please go to your local vet if there is any difficulties with expressing the glands.

THANKS FOR SHARING THIS GREAT VID. You show things many other vids didn't & gave more useful tips & guidelines than others too. Tho not discussed, you showed proper hold for handling dog by helper which is needed for novices, especially with a skittish dog experiencing discomfort. Also guidelines re pressure required to do this, so if it's impacted, I'll know to stop & wait for wait to open & go back to warm compresses & "cone of shame" until then

This was helpful and that was a pretty easy-going dog (and daughter, tbh). How often should you have to do this and could I give my dog pumpkin to help to naturally express the glands so I don't have to violate him this way? I really don't want to have to resort to this.

      Hi Sandra,
Not all dogs need manual expressions. Adding fiber to your dogs diet can help the glands and bowl movements. There is another way to express the glands, but it doesn’t always work. External gland expression is done regularly by groomers. The dogs that aren’t able to express on their own need manual help. How often depends on the dog. Usually they will show signs of either licking, scooting, or start to smell.

Oops that was stop & wait for vet to open. Would be nice to know how much fiber recommended to help prevent future occurrences (12lb chi mix), whether this is a senior thing (didn't occur until 9. Just turned 10 this week & 3rd time now diet hasn't changed much). Also how often estimated to do for preventive maintenance? Thanks again for all the useful tips, especially the wipe in hand, seems easier than finding apron & face shield!☺️

Hi there! If you want to try canned pumpkin that might help. I would start out with 1/4 of a tablespoon morning and night, or once a day depending on how often he/she has bowel movements. There are natural supplements that you can try too. I believe it’s called Glandex. I luckily do not need to use supplements or manual expressions since my dog naturally does it on it’s own.

What happens if you don't do this?

Sorry for the delayed response. If your dog is able to excrete the glands on his/her own you don’t have to worry about it. Typically you’ll start seeing your dog scooting and or licking at their rear end a lot. You can try adding fiber and supplements focusing on the anal gland production. If you know the dog needs manual expressions and don’t do anything about it, then you are risking an anal gland infection which can eventually abscess. Abscesses rupture, and needs veterinary attention asap.

I forgot to also add if you smell a fishy type of odor, that can mean some anal glad fluid has seeped out. Which is good!
