The people who made the trailer for The Empty Man deserved to be fired big time. Such a massive fail. They literally made the movie seem like a silly slasher...which it completely was not. Also big props for giving Stuckmann his fair dues. That's how we found out about the movie too. Respect to both of you. And director David Prior

    Do you like cosmic horror?
Do you like strange things that you can't understand?
Do you like slow-paced, beautiful cinematography?
Well then, don't miss this! it's criminally underrated.

I actually saw this in theaters. It was me and probably like 3 other people in there. I found it to be a good time. It shocked me that a lot of horror peeps didn't give it any attention. It was so under the radar. Glad your bringing some light to this movie bro. I honestly think they could make this out of a TV series.

This movie tried too many things at once .. and then people lose intrest.
It's a very natural thing, we arent stupid you know. We inadvertently catch on to allot of slightly irritant vibes.
And then we have our subconscious mind to tell us to be different than anyone else so we rebel against norms and standards.
Atleast that's one thing this film did, but quite sadly, at the cost of being anywhere near coherent.

"I grew up in San Francisco." Great review, Lee! Hard not to admire how far reaching it felt. Just wish there would've been more Stephen Root. There was another little-seen great with James Badge Dale from a few years back called MICKEY AND THE BEAR that I was fortunate enough to catch when it was quietly released around here. Would consider it a bleak coming-of-age story and well worth your time. He's incredible in it.

I'm a Lovecraft fan, and after finally seeing this movie last night - I absolutely loved it! The more you know, the crazier it gets! I was in awe, entranced even, by the photography, flawless visuals and the soundtrack/sound design - just amazing! I agree with tightening the plot a little bit, but the feeling of going down the rabbit hole is kinda part of what a good cosmic horror movie/story is. It makes you pause, reflect and wonder. Thumbs up!

@DrumDums I just got around to finishing this the first time and it’s one of those that I think I’ll have to watch through a few more times to really tell if I enjoyed it or not.
Just from first impressions, I think I enjoyed it but, my minds so numb from trying to figure out what was going on in the latter half of the film especially when they were throwing all of the cult’s jargon and specific terminology at me I was just overwhelmed.
I guess it’s one I liked enough on first viewing but, I believe it will grow on me and I could even grow to love it the more I dig deep into it and learn what it was really trying to say as a film which, I feel it has a very specific message but, what that message is I have no idea and I’ll have to uncover over time through multiple watches.

Just watched this on HBOmax (prior to watching this review) -- was interested enough that I’ve been surfing other folks takes for the last hour. The film’s pretty great- and I do mean great- not flawless, but super ambitious visually, thematically and full of lovecraftian horror. I was grateful that I knew nothing about it going in-- btw the film needs it’s long run time- it pulls the rug out from under you in terms of your expectations multiple times. Evocative of a great many films including Rosemary’s Baby. Zero jump scares in the entire thing btw.

Loved the tone of this flick. Was a little long, but it didn't get boring. The kills were a little disappointing, only one on screen kill near the beginning, with unsatisfactory blood, but this ending reminded me of the ending of Hereditary. Aside from the length, my only real gripe is how they didn't design the Empty Man based on the skeleton they find. That would have been freakin' creepy! It had like 10 fingers on each hand, but I realize it wasn't really about the "monster" as much as the protagonist's journey. Really dug this flick! ✂️

The Empty Man wasn't the monster. The monster was called the Between One or the Other. The Empty Man is just a human vessel to channel the Between One. Our main protagonist is the Empty Man. The term is a rank in the cult. The rank of prophet.

This movie borrowed ideas from many other horror films, maybe too many, and none of these ideas was explored properly. I am generally down with films that get to the concept of losing track of reality (e.g. Jacob's Ladder, Videodrome, Perfect Blue) but this one was a confusing mess that had no idea what it was trying to be or maybe it was just too ambitious; not sure which elements would qualify it as a cult film. Having said that it had a few cool and creepy moments but overall it was a mess. 5/10

Although there are many similarities to other movies I've seen (that I won't mention yet), "The Empty Man" manages to be it's own thing with a very solid directorial style & cinematography! There's a lot of creepy stuff going on, but man that one scene with the video to outside with the fire (purposely vague) is the stuff of nightmares... AND I LOVED IT!!!
I can't wait to revisit this!

I saw your review and finally watched it last night. I really enjoyed it, will have to watch it again for the full experience. There was so much visually to look at. A good movie all around... thanks for the review, i probably would have gone right past it otherwise.

Agreed Mark. There's a lot to take in with this movie. Can't wait to own it, if it ever comes to blu-ray.

@DrumDums if you didn’t see my statement that I finally got around to watching this earlier today I have to say it was a really good time the more I thought about it after watching it, I’ll be honest when I first finished it I wasn’t quite sure what to think.
I don’t watch a ton of very lovecraftian and very strange horror movies like that and all the jargon thrown around about this otherworldly entity of The Empty Man and how it needs a new “Tulpa” which is basically a new shell to inhabit every so many years, I’ll be honest I was so confused after finishing it that I had to look up a article from Collider to sort out what the hell I just watched.
I knew in the back of my mind as a surface level creature feature I enjoyed it but, some of the deeper themes of dealing with grief and loss, were really lost on me until I read an explainer article after watching it and it really cleared my head and sort of allowed me to make sense of all of the plot threads going on at once, then I realized I actually loved the film once, I sort of pieced together what the hell I just witnessed.
I will admit, the empty man skeletal creature that inhabits these “tulpas” or human shells kind of reminded me of the grim reaper once, it was finally chasing down James LaSombre aka James Badge Dale’s ex detective character.

I wonder if Billy Joel saw Fight Club. Even if he thought it was a little overlong, I bet he loved it just the way it is.

That was a GREAT MOVIE! It honestly feels kinda like a Roman Polanski film meets David Fincher film. It honestly feels like a movie that came out in like, the early 90’s.
Man, this film needs WAY more fans. I would love for people to see it and experience the AMAZING film that it is.

Just watched this. Big, big fan of it. I'd say its the best film I've seen this year tbh. It's dark and eerie. It is very enjoyable to watch the mystery unfold as the character discovers things. It really is a very well put together story. I wasn't that bothered by the final 5-10 mins or so but it didn't disappoint me.
Solid 8/10 for me. And I usually despise horrors, but this film did it a lot of the basic stuff right and I was pretty glued to the screen. This movie single-handedly gave me confidence that an actual Lovecraft movie could be done well one day and nail the tone.

One thing I didn't get, at the end it is revealed when he is sneaking arount the cult headquarters and startles the group sitting in a circle blowing into bottles, it's revealed there are two of him and it seems like two timelines diverged? I didn't get that part.

Empty Man needs to be seen by every horror fan, its the best I've seen in years. Ignore the trailer which is totally misrepresentative. Its one of the very few Horror Films that has a concept that;s so large it just comes across as Epic. Empty Man was Epic.

The Empty Man has just rocked up on Disney Plush, in full fat UHD. Really cool stuff. Definitely feels like the spiritual successor to It Follows. As much as Under the Silverlake is badass, this is a pure random private detective horror Odyssey....
Like a tasty burger: very well done...

Why is no one talking about this? Simple answer: Bye Bye Man. If you have a ridiculous name for a horror movie. There is a good chance people will not see it.

Agreed. But for me that doesn't mean it's a bad name after seeing the movie. It fits. But I don't think they knew how to market it without separating it from those other movies with similar names. Hope you're doing well brother.

I can see why some people like this film. It's highly ambitious however unfortunately for me it doesn't quite follow through with it's ambitiousness. The film feels extremely scattered with somewhat several different films crammed into one.
The film has a few cheap moments that I felt degraded the movie. For instance the nude sauna scene. The motives of the "killings" doesn't really get explained, besides just to add a bit of gore to film.
I understand the "theme" of the movie but it never really gets explore. It explains it in a half baked idea within the very last moments of the film and we are just suppose to be like "okay that makes sense".
Which brings me to the "twist" it wasn't very good, saw it a mile away when they introduced the "man in the hospital".
Ambitious film but it's flaws kinda ruin the film.

I really enjoyed The Em' 'ty Man - i have a region 4 dvd ... Sure it is a slow burner - but for those who enjoy a good mystery cosmic horror - it has some fantastic elements that really keep you hooked in. The opening prologue is brilliant and if you enjoy cosmic creepy thrillers for their freaking brilliance - this is sure to please...

I feel like a good mystery has to have a solution, not another mystery to end it. This film was exclusively mysterious and incoherent. If only the beginning was the premise of the movie.

@@sdog1234 Even Carpenter's The Thing ends with a mystery - i like films that leave you thinking. Cosmic horror can be incoherant for sure - check out the russian film Superdeep for some of that ... overall tho i enjoy these types of films if they are done well.

@DrumDums I’m about to check out this movie because, every now and then I’m in the mood for a horror movie that isn’t your typical stock supernatural horror film which, yeah I remember seeing the trailer for this and wanting to see it because, I’m a huge fan of Supernatural horror films and it seemed like this could be an interesting one.
However, I’m glad I didn’t get a chance to see this in theaters mostly because, I think I would have been disappointed because, the marketing sold me a completely different type of movie compared to what I was really getting based on what you said in your spoiler free review and it might be one I’ll have to watch a few times before reviewing it on Letterboxd to let it truly soak in.

A film that could compare to Lovecraft himself, I had the pleasure of seeing it in the cinema and to say, no e seen not even 1 single film that freed my blood for so long, I have been spinning the film for months now in my mind, I already knew the concept of tulpa, but at this level it is not only the terror of the film , if not, the horror of feeling that your very existence is like a tulpa, that it is real and that it is not, simply magnificent, there are no words to describe How plotted I am for this movie!
