The care bear sticker on the fridge at the beginning of the film is foreshadowing. The care bears shoot love out of their chest and Donnie darko and his family have worm holes coming out of their solar plexus later on in the film.

What so insane about Kingdom Hearts plotline...Its about darkness, and a child using a 4 foot key to seal away that darkness, and those trying to fill him with darkness or light, and sometimes get at his darkness. Where a 3 foot mouse commands a 6 foot dog and 4 foot duck to accompany him in a ship made of gummi to various disney worlds to take back the souls of people being stolen by a man inside his childhoods friends darkness. A quick explanation:
Donnie Darko is about the tangent universe theory. basically, there's the main universe and at one point (when the jet engine falls on Donnie's room) a tangent universe is formed. A tangent universe is a complete carbon copy of the main universe but it is very unstable and will collapse in a short amount of time (28:06:42:12) by causing a black hole big enough to swallow the tangent universe AND the main universe, hence ending the world.
If you watch the director's cut it is explained that every one who survives the tangent universe (everyone except Frank and gretchen) is called the manipulated living, they need to make sure that Donnie can return back in time through the portal to when the dimensional split occured and he has to die to prevent the dimensional split. This is why the characters didn't act like humans, because they had a set role they were unconsciously fulfilling.

    • @EvenTheDogAgrees
      @EvenTheDogAgrees 5 років тому +8

It's been many years since I saw this, but from what I remember him not dying when he was supposed to was creating a rip in the fabric of the universe, which would eventually destroy everything. Grandma Death or whatever they called her wrote a book about it, because it's a semi-regular occurance, apparently. And from that point on, the universe will do everything it can to steer him in the right direction, by "puppeteering" the people around him in order to manipulate him to do The Right Thing (TM).
Wasn't there like a director's cut that had a lot more material and explained it rather clearly (and basically ruined the mistique by taking away all the guesswork and interpretation)?
Anyway, I also like the Jacob's Ladder interpretation Madfox presented. Which reminds me I should definitely rewatch both Donnie Darko and Jacob's Ladder.

It depends from teacher to teacher. Most teachers are there just for the academic lesson. But my chorus teacher genuinely cared about us and like twice a month she would have a "centering day" where she would have us do meditation for like 25 minutes and then asked us to share how we felt afterwards if we wanted. It was the most calming parts of the school year and it was really surprising to see other teenagers open up about they were struggling that day or that week. 7:58 The controlling fear thing isn't far fetched at all for the time period. A lot of schools were doing programs based on junk psychology at the time while bashing "negative influences" as pornography. My grade school principal (who was something of a Reagan-ite) started a program called 'Positive Actions' and I just couldn't stand it. Some of the younger kids liked it but I was in the sixth grade, I didn't want to deal with that shit.

@@NudeSophist The movie is supposed to take place in 1988 not post 9/11 hence why the OP mentioned Reagan lol. If anything Doug would have been around 6 or 7 years old in 88 and too young to remember when schools (middle and high school) were teaching the sort of thing depecticed in the film. My older brother was starting 5th or 6th grade in 88 remembers that era and all the weird psychology stuff. By the time I started 6th grade in the mid 90s we didn't have it anymore thankfully. And movies right after 9/11 were trying to be more...uplifting? I guess I would say because a lot of audiences were trying to escape the gloom and depression that lingered after 9/11 but if I'm not mistaken this movie was filmed before 9/11 and released right around it. It took a few years for it to find success. I remember by 2007/2008 it was at its height in popularity. It kind of flew under the radar in 2001

@Kyle Micheals -- Don't worry, you're fine. That "Satanic Panic" shit crops up about once a decade, has been a regular thing since at least the 50's. Then it was Elvis and pot (if you want a good laugh at how overblown it was, look up the cult classic "Reefer Madness"), later it would be acid rock, communism, and D&D.
By the late 90's/ early 2000's it would be Harry Potter brainwashing kids into paganism and witchcraft and Marylin Manson's music causing school shootings. And then came the REALLY insane stuff, like the preacher who claimed the Telletubbies were sending out subliminal messages to turn toddlers into gay, crossdressing, Satanists. And then there's everything that happened when the general public was introduced to what a Furry was...

Your thoughts are still clumsy and unrefined but it's still an accomplishment to put more thought into the world around you.
That's pretty much this movie's theme in a nutshell. This movie is clumsy and awkward, but it's trying to explore deeper meanings and thoughts. And the audience that likes it seem to be in that stage of growth.

Its kind of the main drivers. Is he truly insane and out of his mind? Or is the world actually going to end if he doesn't obey the giant bunny from hell?
And as Doug would put it, the answer is simply yes.

One of my psych papers had an assignment where we were to diagnose a character from a film we hadn't seen, so I chose this. He does portray a schizophrenic character very well, though my job was kinda too easy given he's already taking medication and therapy for it. The question is, is everything else just in his mind? Pretty sure what was being watched here though was the director's cut, because the clearest evidence that there's more going on than just his delusions is Frank taking off his mask in the cinema. Everything else is kinda ambiguous; those water bubbles that show where someone will go never show anything beyond what could easily be viewed as an educated guess.
But yeah, if you watch the original theatrical version I hear it's a pretty good representation of someone going through schizophrenia. Perhaps that's part of the reason a lot of it is confusing awkward as it's trying to portray how people with schizophrenia view the world.

@@killingmewillnotbringbacky9177 In the classroom scene Donnie is given a hypothetical situation in which he finds a wallet on the ground and keeps the money, and then must determine whether that choice was made out of fear or love. When his english teacher is talking about The Destructors she says it's about children who find a stash of money and burn it.
Donnie later find Patrick Swayze's wallet on the ground, and uses it to find out where he lives and burns his house down.

We also see a very short conversation between his physics and English teachers, where they just mention his name and laugh without any context - signifying that they possibly are somewhat aware of being manipulated living.

I liked the movie because of Donnie. I used to go to therapy, always cynical, took medication, used to talk back to my teachers infront of the entire class, and I was good at English class while everyone else sucked at it like they did in the movie. Donnie reminded me a lot of myself and thats what made me like the movie.

Just like you I could relate to Donnie, but I find most of the movie pretentious because of the high school portions and didn’t really delve much further about his depression and cynicism. The part of ”god’s channel” also made me skip the scene, I’m all for debating physics but including an omnipotent being into the conversation and I lose interest.

The best part of this movie is the surrealism that comes across as nostalgia. It's the combination cinematography, color tones, music, and just the weird-ass dialogue--which is surreal because I was like 5 during the time setting of the movie. "Hey, you guys, guess what?! My Mom said the school is closed today because it’s flooded. " "Holy shit! That's the best news I've ever heard!"
Also, you stopped right before the best line in the movie.
"You'll put Ariel in the garbage disposal."
    "Goddamn right, I will."
That line is the most beautiful thing I've witnessed Gyllenhaal say. It's like he snuck in 40 extra pounds of baggage along with that line. I just love every millisecond. I can't explain it more clearly than that.

I grew up a goth (tragic I know) but somehow I never saw this movie, I think some part of me assumed it was overrated, but watching this review and seeing a lot of these scenes makes me glad I never saw it. Donnie is very similar to how most of us goths were in my town and seeing this would've either made me feel justified in staying goth longer, or made me feel disgusted with myself and seek out much more help than I needed at the time.... I eventually grew into needing that much help but I didn't need it at the time.
