I don't understand the hate for deferrals--other than it just being jealousy. The money has to be placed into an escrow account for the player within 1 1/2 years of the season in which it was earned. The team ultimately pays it up front, and it sits in an account earning interest until the agreed up payment date. Neither the team or player can touch it, and the teams pay less (present day value), while the player earns more (present day value + interest). Every. Team. Should. Be. Doing. This. The CBA (page 89) states there's no limit to deferrals, and the argument that it acts like a credit account for the team, where they can put off payment is just...wrong. The escrow accounts would transfer with ownership if the team is sold, so the argument that it puts a burden on future owners is also just...wrong. Maybe it's time to hold the teams pocketing the revenue sharing money accountable, instead of bitching about the teams willing to put their revenues back into the team.
Yeah, a bizarre % of fans seem to think deferrals are some "kick the can down the road" thing where the team is just magically hoping they find money in 10 years to start paying players. No, it's still money the team has to have now, just slightly less. The interest will make up the rest, and in fact teams can even take any profit over the mandated amount for the player. It's also something the player themselves has to agree to - LA isn't forcing anyone into these contracts. The deferrals get blown out of proportion due to Ohtani's historic contract terms but everyone else's contracts are pretty par for the course.
@spdodger I disagree with deferring contacts..!!! There should be a salary cap, none of this bs luxury tax nonsense either...!!
