Standing out is so important. Out of work because of the pandemic for two years and I have a passion for content creation. I don’t have a ton of experience but I still applied for jobs. I had an interview at a corporate head office for handling all fifty of their stores social media content… and I got the job. Over two hundred applicants and I beat out those that had far more experience. I know I’m outgoing and was honest my whole interview. They even said I wasn’t where they want, but my personality stood out and they will help support me to get me to the right place. Rely on what you’re good at!
Thank you so much Chris, I am a mother of 2 girls from the Philippines. 16 years ago I resigned from my first and last corporate job to take care of my 2 daughters. Now, that they are grown up, I am ready to start my career again as a freelancer. I just finished my social media management short course. I am not fluent in English, overage, my corporate job was 16 years ago. But I am not taking it as a hindrance not to start again. I just want to thank you for keeping me motivated everyday.
I really like the idea of changing the approach for social media from 'talking about us' to 'having a conversation' with the audience. Years ago, I first thought the solution was to share other people's content that I had found interesting, but then realized that's what everyone is doing anyways. And so, at that time I fell into the trap of social media being a copy of my portfolio, not having anything personal to say and share. I think the hardest part of this for me is first having something important, unique or just useful to say and put out there. I would imagine that's what a lot of us struggle with.
Thanks, Chris, I'm a young illustrator and I thought that my social media is just for a portfolio, but after I watched this video, I finally realize all of it is just useless if people don't attracted anymore with my work. I'll try to change my strategy so I can do better. Thank you so much Chris!!!
Fortunate to be alive in an era where information this valuable is available for free! Amazing and valuable content like always. Thank you, Chris and The Futur team.
Why do I ever get distracted and stop watching your videos? THEY HELP ME SO MUCH!!! Each one, without fail, consistently delivers value from start to finish. There's never any filler, exaggerated claims, or manipulative pitches to "buy my product, or you'll end up broke and devoid of purpose." 🤣🤣 Whenever you make an offer, Chris, it's always valid, ethical, and packed with value that you've repeatedly demonstrated in the hundreds of videos available, and of course, in the dozens I've personally viewed. Each single video holds more value than most courses out there claiming to teach the same material. You share high-level insights and real business principles that go beyond just the creative realm, extending to service and agency models as well - precisely the area I'm trying to grow. Your mindset, your thought process, your integrity - they're a refreshing change of pace. Even when you speak the truth bluntly, discussing harsh realities, you do it with respect, leaving my self-esteem intact. You allow me to feel humbled without feeling worthless and hopeless. This particular video has stirred up my confidence, encouraging me to openly share my ideas. Thanks, man! I find myself needing to transcribe your videos to fully absorb your insights. Your points flow seamlessly from your lips, each bearing a level of depth that requires time for us beginners to digest...and I absolutely love it! Thank you! May God continue to pour out his strength and blessings to you and your family, **enabling** you to keep igniting the paths with LIGHT and COURAGE of those you guide!
"Stand out 1/8 of an inch." That will stick with me. Sometimes we tell ourselves the story that to be good or stand out we have to be extraordinary or head and shoulders above the crowd. The thought of that can feel insurmountable - how can I, especially a beginner/new to the field or market be head and shoulders above the countless rest? Inactivity or paralysis may be soon to follow. If we just think of it as an 1/8 of inch we think - you know what? I CAN do that. Those two words, "I can" repeat over and over, becoming the narrative we believe. Thank you for sharing.
Sometimes I have to go out of my industry to remember how to negotiate my niche clientele. Thank you Chris, I found your work a couple months back, love your message of kindness and the being honest about your 'why.'
This is the best video i have watched in the past two years. Social Media can be so exhausting when you don't have the right mission. Trying to make everything about you is exhausting. Thank you for this!
Good point on 'buying a project'. I actually partnered up with a potential client and put my own money in as an investment where I was free to design as an investment partner instead of as an architect.
I appreciate how encouraging you are, Chris. We met at Creative South about three years ago and you encouraged me to start my own business. I recently got laid off and my wife encouraged me to finally make the leap. I prayerfully decided that it’s time. It’s scary. Because of that, I have never appreciated encouragement more in my life, and your videos have definitely given me that.
I went to college for a bachelors in communication and design back in 2015. I graduated and eventually stopped doing anything in the field for years. Now I’m back in on it and your videos play while I do studies and projects. You have been very real and upfront with the truth in all your videos. Sharing knowledge and critique. Pointing out flaws we all have coming into design or struggling to be in it. I super appreciate you and thanks for inspiration.
It's never easy to stand out and not want results when you have so many problems in your life to contend with. However, I look at it this way, the more you sharpen your axe, the easier it will be to chop whatever tree down in the industry you want to add value to. And it takes time to build value and develop the skills sometimes. This is awesome advice and always appreciate the content from this channel. Thanks Chris.
Key Takeaways 1. Social media is about conversations with people. Give them a reason to care and to share your content. 2. Find your voice and rhythm. Learn to write a few sentences, use great images, incorporate your unique lens to build an audience that shows up for you. 3. Start today! All this knowledge acquired is meaningless unless you apply it. 4. If you have a level of polish and have ideas with a point of view, people will reach out to you. 5. Stand out by one-eighth of an inch - Pick your niche and give value consistently on the platform that you think best suits you. 6. Do not negotiate against yourself before the client has an opportunity. Let them do their job so they can feel good about it as well. 7. Trade Up Principle: Sell something to buy something similar but more expensive. Allow yourself to do marketing projects or feel-good projects for a good cause.
Pause. I was watching another video from you guys and UA-cam autoplayed this one. By the time I moved my mouse towards the X to close the tab, I heard the first sentence and got hooked in. "Your social media is not your portfolio." - Huh. Tell me more. It took 3 seconds to get me to watch the 13 minutes. That's impressive stuff, guys. Congrats !
Thanks Chris. Honestly, my confidence increased with your content. It took a year...there's no quick fix, I learned to be patient again after I rebelled against it. So grateful for the Melinda videos, she's great
This is one of those rare videos I watched again and this time, it hit me. The 1/8" inch principle. I thought I had to be someone "not me" but in fact, just being "me" is enough.. but nobody knows cause I don't share the deep inner wisdom, ideas, quirks. For me, its mental health as an Entrepreneur, Founder, Creative, Multipotentialite. This is definitely something I'm into and in fact, I love to serve in this area of interest. Thanks Chris!
This(!!) literally hits the 'extreme value' end of the free content spectrum. !!WOW!! What a benchmark. What an example. What humanity. This is like a master class I'd pay for & feel stoked w/ what I got from it. And this is classic Do. Mind blown. Heart opened. And doors opened to 'what can I possibly deliver in my niche / space?' Soooo many thanks Chris and team. Stay well!!!
I was critically thinking about something & Chris Do made the point that I've been trying to clearly define to someone else AND OF COURSE to myself. I wanted to help someone for free simply because I wanted to help them. Our philanthropic foundations DO NOT align. Yet no discovery, no one solicited me. Here I wast putting my energy into someone (a brick & mortar business) who probably does not have their priorities aligned with bringing value to the market (they even said as much). Still, I was setting the groundwork towards a pivot which consisted of convincing someone why I should mentor them (obsessively work my ass off for free) until they win just because I wanted to change their perspective & intentions of "just wanting to make money" to instead bring value to the market. Then BOOM: @chrisdo says it all within the span of a few minutes in this vid. Wish I could write more about it but confidentiality is a gem. I've journaled about this business about 9 separate times about my experience there & while I give them 5 stars for their intentions they only get 1 star for their actual performance. They have over 85% of all their bases covered. It's that little 15% that hurts us. I need to learn MORE on how to explain myself. I need to buy more @thefutur courses. For REAL!✌🏼👽✌🏼
This is such an enjoyable video. Love the quality of the sound, how calm the vibe is yet so rich with information and advice. Feel like I just had a great conversation with someone who is happy to share what they know with me 🙌🏾
The key takeaway for me from this video is that I need to give value, where they can learn and share. :) As of now, it's mostly like a portfolio showcase in IG. Also loved the way you shared the insight about certain projects to be a "Marketing Expense". Interesting analogy!
I am in my 40s and I wished I had learnt about Chris Do earlier. But I am very motivated by what he is sharing and I am so going to share about him to every teenager I know. :)
Didn't realize how much I needed to hear about the desperation bit. Just recently graduated and I was feeling that pressure to negotiate down just to get my foot through the door! Thanks for the valuable content as always.
Hmmmmm....talk about perfect timing. This has been my major headache in 2021. Because I just social media as a platform for my portfolio and had doubts as to using it share valuable information. This is so helpful! I’m going to make that change. Thanks so much Chris 🙏🏽
What is really interesting is how that principle can be applied to any kind of business. Serve others first then you'll be amazed at how fast you can grow.
I'm so glad I came across this video. May the good work you do and share come back to you a billion times over. Much appreciated - from South Africa 🙌❤️🇿🇦
Great post on marketing yourself in a way that sets you apart from the competition. Focus on the long game and not the result game was a special takeaway from Chris. With so many people chasing number, there is the question about the quality or value of the content. I would focus my attention on the few individuals that are interested in using my content to grow their business rather than trying to be famous. Another takeaway is understanding the value of your work and knowing what the intent of that value gets. And to be honest with your intent.
I absolutely love your positions on this topic Chris. Thank you for the insights, I definitely feel once I changed my perspective on social media to how Can I help the audience, instead of being about me, it radically improved my relationship with social media. Thanks again
Interestingly, in the past, all my work came through word of mouth, but since I have made a few shifts in biz model, I need a different approach. This video is very timely. Thanks matey.
This is exactly what I needed. I think I am stuck because I am not creating value for other people - I have the intention, but I think I will have to find the method. Thanks so much for this :)
I came across your Ikigai video when you were explaining and writing on a whiteboard a few years ago. Today I found your channel again. I believe this is no coincidence. I love what you're sharing here. Thank you.
It's important to have self-confidence. I read somewhere that to be successful in a field, you have to find ways to reach people. The richest people in the world are the ones who find ways to reach the most people, the fastest. Some copywriters and marketers are able to make amazing salaries every month. The truth is, I hesitated to change jobs.😅 But would I have been able to do the same? Certainly not. So I started working on myself and finally forgot about the age factor. I started to learn English to reach more people, because basically I speak French. I am more confident and work daily on my impostor syndrome. Today, things are much better, my clients don't want to break up our relationship. Not because I don't make mistakes, but because I enjoy bringing them value and learning more to be better. I am a Designer, I am problem solver. Thank for the value you share.

Just Finished the Lazy Man's Way To Riches - By the late Joe Karbo, and one of the killer ideas is, you only need to figure out what you're better than most at, then share that knowledge. E.g If you're intermediate in Piano, you can teach Beginners, and as they progress, you continue learning so you're able to continue teaching them. Don't forget to interact on, these 3 levels, those already in positions where you want to be, those on your level and helping to bring those below your level of expertise. Many just stay on their level. If you're a designer creative type (though really, everyone is, anyway), and you have issues with Negotiation, first off check out Chris Voss' Masterclass, then read his book, Never Split the Difference and then Read Start With NO by Jim Camp. One of the subjects he drives home as Chris is talking about here 10:22 is DON'T BE NEEDY, In any area of your life really, not just in negotiations or consultations with clients!
"Reason to care and reason to share", lot of people don't have this in mind because their whole attention is focused on their personal ego and it seems that our own ego working against us more often.
I’m glad I clicked on this video. This gave me motivation and encouragement to get back on social media. I used to post a lot and grew an audience but then I became complacent and didn’t post much. I also let Social media pressure get in the way of posting content and feeling like I felt behind. Thanks for the video!
I’m about to graduate this May. Been watching this show since 2017 when I started college. Felt like you were talking directly to me on this one, Chris. Thank you again for another banger!
I discovered this channel a few weeks ago and I must say, I fell in love with it. The content is valuable, concise and easy to understand. Looking forward to more videos.
I always find great how your videos just seem to appear just when one does need it. I was just speaking about how I need to begin working on socialising more than working because of the value of networking and great relationships not just with clients but with people who share my interests. Keep up with the good content, Long live Thefutur!
I think Chris Do is the only person I've seen who can give me 10 different advices in just over a minute of video. Man, he really is a legend!
I was worried it was too much too fast.

“Stay out of the results business for a while, and see who shows up for you” that hit home for me.
Hello James...could you explain what a results business is? Is it when you offer a service?
@@theauntie Hi! He just meant don't worry about the results yet. Just put in the work first, for whoever happens to show up for you.

0:08 use ig as a way to have a convo not a portfolio
reason to care
reason to share
1:18- first step
and how you lose- when you give up and you dont take in any feedback atall- coz its a conversation so listen - or eles ppl will leave coz you not LISTENING
3:08 - have conversation with ppl and yur givng in a way of generosity [ don;t intellectually masturbate - action action action ]
4:30 - go narrow in a niche- play the long game and stay out of the results biz for a while- see who shows up [and keep giving them what they need-HAVE IDEAS AND A POINT OF VIEW
6:10 STAND OUT even one 8th of an inch
7:14 - leving thoughtful comments and askign chris if he can be on his ig live and got a yes
when to do free work - not when your despirate ppl can smell the air of despirationon you from a mile away
dont lie to yourself
- dotn do free work coz you dont want to have a conflict in the now
do it if its either for a noble cause - like for the planet or your trading up or for tex dedutables or make it clear - youll do it at this rate but you will introduce me to your wealthy ppl only if you like my work
Thanks for Sharing. My take away was negotiating with a non-profit. What a great idea. Thanks again.
The backing track is everything.
You motivate me to rise me from my grave and start working on myself.
1/8 of a difference. Gold. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thanks for the video!
you can do it!
This video has changed my mindset completely. ✅
Thanks for sharing.
Pearls of wisdom & nuggets of knowledge, like always. Thank you Chris!

I always find great how your videos just seem to appear just when one does need it.
I was just speaking about how I need to begin working on socialising more than working because of the value of networking and great relationships not just with clients but with people who share my interests.
