- Atari and developer Digital Eclipse are excited to announce a significant expansion to their acclaimed 2022 release Atari 50: the Anniversary Collection. The new version, entitled Atari 50: the Anniversary Celebration Expanded Edition, adds two new timelines and 39 games to the playable Atari retrospective. The game will release October 25 on PC, Switch, Xbox One and Series X, and PlayStation 4 & 5, and the Atari VCS this holiday, including a physical release on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5.

I'll be getting the dlc when it arrives. This is genuinely the best retro game compilation I've played.
I feel like it was a missed opportunity of not including the arcade version of Night Driver, given its historical significance with the company and where the idea came from. I just hope it is one of the new 39 games (especially the arcade version).
I wish they would add playable digital versions of the old late 1970s pinball machines to Atari 50, like Superman, Space Riders, Middle Earth, Airborne Avengers, The Atarians and Hercules.
Can't wait for this. I have it on The VCS and PS5.

Atari 50 is a great buy as is, I’m happy to pay for more cool shit in there. I’ll probably grab that steel book as well as pick up the dlc on my VCS.
I don’t mind throwing money at a good product, and this is one of the best retro compilations released by anyone.

I really hope SEGA puts out something like this in a physical release. They have such a big library of arcade & console games to choose from that aren't part of the Genesis console & many have never been re-released. As for "Atari 50", yes I have it & since the new expanded version is also getting a physical release, looks like I'll be buying it again. :)

I think it was a better choice to release it as a DLC rather than selling a new separate game.
They're doing both, so those who got in early can upgrade and those who never picked it up can get the new bundle.
This one replaces the old and people with the original can upgrade. Would love Stern arcade in there and they get Activision/Imagic in there.
I disagree a bit, but get what you are saying. If it is only dlc, it will be download only and with the Switch being the console I got it on, I would much rather have it on a cart without the internet check every time I open the game.

yep! pulled the trigger on steam $25 ... actually also picked up avain knights, new montazoomas revenge )new/retro( , doom 2016, bandi pacman pack 1 and high on life ... I also noticed amazone has a sale ... Game station pro #2 for $49 and a communistdore 64 mini for $44 ...
In another youtube video I stated the Atari 50 was the gift that keeps on giving, so happy this is an accurate statement. My only criticism of the Atari 50 is the Atari ST coverage as it's just a paragraph of text and no game representation, I really hope they do another update to correct this.
I hope so too. When I heard that in the Llamasoft Collection they used Jag ports of the ST games, my heart cried... Could DE not handle ST emulation?
I’m still trying to figure out what the Atari 50 is. I was under the impression it was just a bloated collection of ten cartridges that cost $1000.
I sincerely hope that the lack of Atari St games is more about some kind of Licensing matter, and therefore hopefully they get their ducks in a row such that they can release a single Atari St package as DLC
The timeline reminds me of some fighter plane CDs (DVDs?) I had for my Cyrix 5x86 desktop in the 90s. Loved the multimedia learning!

I really wish they would expand the 3rd section in VCTR SCTR into a stand alone game. It's like Beamrider but WAY better. Unfortunately, the opening Asteroids section always costs me at least 1 of my 3 lives.

Hell yeah I'm buying it! I already bought Atari Flashback Classics Vol. 3 for $20 to play more 5200 & M Network games on my Xbox along with Atari 50 Collection.
Definitely sounds worthwhile and I'm surely interested, but if it's paid DLC even for current owners, I'll wait for more context before deciding to purchase.

I hope those pictures of Berzerk in the Atari art cards and marquee signs are an indication that the playable game itself will make an appearance in the Expanded Edition of Atari 50.

I own the regular edition for the switch. I think I am gonna double down and get the Steel Book edition on this one. It's seems worth it as this will be the definitive edition for this collection. Man between this and the Marvel Vs Capcom collection coming out this is a great year for retro collections. Now if Sega could give us a Crazy Taxi collection that would be the perfect trio for me. 😅

This is how you take care of your customers. I hope it wins over the folks who are resisting, that say "This isn't really Atari". Because, well, with respect, it is Atari. A company is whomever owns the rights to it. And as long as they're giving customers what they want, then that's what matters.
And we all know how much of a shortage we have of companies who don't cater to their customers! Lookin at you, AAA developers!

I’m undecided on whether to double dip on getting the new steel book edition even though I got the first steel book edition since it has all of the dlc in the cartridge and cool physical stuff or just get the new content as dlc for a lower price.
This new DLC might finally make me buy this. I've been on the fence for months now.

Playing it on Switch is fantastic. Try playing the games with a NES or SNES Controller. Especially the 7800 games with the NES controller! Excellent!
I feel like if I'm paying for it anyway, I'd have to get the new physical with all the updates/expansions, for Switch. 🙂
I plan to purchase the DLC. i might buy a copy of the physical edition for my brother. my brother and his wife both have their own switch.
Probably will get both the set and DLC when each are available.
They really did go above and beyond with the presentation of all those games and their supplemental materials. Hopefully they set some kind of standard for how to do that.

I love that they are covering both ends. If ya own it get the DLC. Ill be happy to pay as long as its not crazy $. If you dont, , Atari will be gobbling up possible new customers of the brand. esp on Switch where u can get a whole new "younger" demographic. Someone's using their brain over there which can't be said for other companies like Disney, paramount, a few gaming co's who seem to be clueless.

What would you consider reasonable? I'm thinking in the $9-or-less range is where the DLC will fall.
if they ad "online play" then it'll be great. the previous Atari collections had online play.
I'm glad the 50th collection is getting new content, but I wish Digital Eclipse would fix some of the emulation issues in the collection's arcade titles

@@GenXGrownUpThe vector wiggle on Vector games and sound errors on other games (Easily noticable on Centipede, seems to affect only some Pixel-based games).
Granted, from what I can tell the vector wiggle is a stylistic choice; on real arcade hardware vectors aren't going to be drawn in the exact same place every time due to physics, but that was offset by how bright the vectors were, not to mention the vectors would be a offset by an amount that was a fraction of the distance between 2 pixels, even on a 1080p LCD display. On an LCD display where whole pixels have to be changed to present the effect, it makes the machine look like it's on its last leg, and I found it almost nauseating. While it may not be a bug, I think it still counts as an issue since it makes fast paced games (like Tempest) difficult to play.
Though for the sound issue, a lot of the pitches were off on a variety of arcade games. The easiest example I can point to is Centipede, where the pitch of firing is an octave higher than original hardware, yet everything else sounds correct. This might be an issue specific to my computer since I play the collection on Steam, and I know emulation can vary from system to system.
I did compare the emulation of these games to how they played on Atari Vault / Classics Collection, where they played comprably to Arcade Hardware on both PC and Switch.
I haven't let Digital Eclipse know directly (I'm not sure how to), but I did make mention of these things on my Steam Review.
@GenXGrownUp The issues I have are Vector Wiggle and Sound Issues. I believe the Vectors moving slightly constantly is a stylistic choice meant to replicate a vector gun imperfectly drawing a frame (due to physics), but its implementation where the vectors are offset left and right by a pixel or 2 constantly (which is more than what a vector gun would be offset by) makes some games (notably Tempest) feel nauseous to play, and it makes me feel like I'm playing a cabinet on its last legs. The sound issue is more tangible; in some games (notably only raster display games), some (and only some) sound effects are pitched incorrectly. An easy example is Centipede, where the firing sound is pitched an octave up from everything else. Granted, this might be because I'm playing on PC, and I know emulation can be funky between different PC architectures, but it's still an issue regardless. My baseline for comparison is the Atari Vault / Atari Classic Collection on PC and Switch, where those games are fairly accurate to their arcade counterparts. I haven't let Digital Eclipse know about the issues directly (I don't know how to report issues / don't have a direct contact to them), but I did mention these issues (plus some other opinions about the collection, but those aren't emulation issues) on my Steam review.

This expanded edition does not have an Xbox release. Just PS5 and Switch, but there is a steel book edition for the Switch only.
Also I read that for those of us that bought the original Atari 50 will get all of this stuff in a DLC later this year. I’m guessing this will be a paid DLC because of how much content there is.
I will be picking up the DLC for the Switch original version providing its not silly money. Under a tenner would be the sweetspot for me.

No? What was the problem? I purchased through Steam and it's run flawlessly on Win11 for me. Hope you get it hammered out.
@@GenXGrownUp Nope. The game would load, but when it tried to do the timeline graphic, it hung, and wouldn't go any further. Tried reinstalling three times, and then tried on another machine, and it did the same thing. Bother are Windows 11. That was quite a while ago, a year, I think. I might try once more, but not holding out much hope.

I'll be interested in what 39 games they are adding to the collection. I originally bought this for nostalgia reasons but was pretty disappointed in the games we got. There are a LOT of games missing that we should have had on day one. I don't think 39 games is going to give us everything we should have had by now.
What sorts of games were you hoping for? If it's stuff from other publishers like Activision, then there was no reason to expect they'd be here since Atari doesn't own the rights to distribute those games. (Yet?)
@@GenXGrownUp All they have to do is call up Activision and ask for a one-time use of those games to add it to Atari 50. If they say "no" just buy the games from them (Atari is buying up everything anyway, right?) They also need to buy back Battlezone, then we could get the Arcade and the 2600 versions on there. Every time some Atari compilation comes out, we get 2600 Desert Falcon. Have you ever played 7800 Desert Falcon? If not, you owe it to yourself to play it because the game is TONS better on the 7800, but we never get it. I believe Atari owns Karateka now, so how about 7800 Karateka? Atari owns Berzerk now, how about Arcade Berzerk, Arcade Frenzy, and the 2600 Berzerk update with the added voices. Pinball Fantasies needs to be in the Jaguar library. I could sit here all night and name off games that we need to get on Atari 50 because they are not on there yet. I think I also answered this question in a previous comment about what I wanted to see on Atari 50 when the update that added Maze Craze came out because it was such a weak, lazy update that was a yawn fest. Atari can do so much better.
Wondering if they'll sneak Pitfall or H.E.R.O. into the new bundle, not sure I should hold my breath though. Sounds like my GOG account will have new dlc in it in the near future lol.
Those are both Activision titles, and unless something changes between now and then, they don't have the rights to redistribute their games.
Microsoft should include them in their game pass core.

Bro, will this have Berserk(arcade version)? If so instant buy. That game is a nightmare after level 4. Even as a kid I could play it for an hour on one quarter. I don’t know why, I’m no great gamer, but I instantly understood its mechanics. The 2600 version doesn’t could because even though it’s a good graphical port, it’s a joke regarding difficulty
