    Well, this video solves the mystery about these fixtures: these were sold under several brands and names and the later ones were plastic, and some included the refractor and others didn't. I'm not sure if the HPS ballast/Lo-Volt combo coincided with the change to the plastic housing, but it might have. I have the identical fixture to yours, metal housing, with the same ballast, but it is branded Electripak and it had a Philips Lo-Volt lamp in it when I bought it, which burned very dim on the H42 ballast. So, chances are the original lamp had been replaced with the "newer" Electripak Lo-Volt lamp, which was the wrong lamp for this version. The Lo-Volt lamp I have works fine on a 100w 55v HPS ballast and I used a Philips HPL-N European 125w lamp in the Electripak fixture since it was fairly difficult to source true 125w lamps in the US even decades ago.

    Lamp was made at the Bath, NY lampworks which closed in early 2014.

    H42... Sylvania made H42 street light fixtures in 1979. The 125W mercury bulb is rarer then hens teeth.

    We had one like this on our house when I was a kid. My dad was an electrician, and installed it. I miss that slightly green light. Great find!

    There are some high bay lights at a camping gear shop and some of them are cycling and tha ballasts make a really loud buzz when they start i dont know if they are metal halide

    Could you fit a hps bulb in it if you so desire

      @Parrot175  3 роки тому +1

      The bulb would fit if you wanted to but then naturally you'd have to change out the ballast, unless it's a retrofit lamp.

      No, the lamp operating voltages are different.

      In fact, you could use a European 110w high pressure sodium lamp such as the Philips SON-H 110w and also you could use a European Sylvania 69/108w Eco Arc high pressure sodium lamp in this fixture too. In addition, you could use a 125w M150 pulse start metal halide lamp in this fixture if you add a European superimposed ignitor to the ballast since those lamps are electrically identical to 125w mercury vapor lamps and there are also 125w metal halide lamps made by Venture that use an internal ignitor, which enables a quick, easy retrofit by simply changing the lamp!

    It's uncommon the ballast have only one-sided iron core rather than both sides

      Basically a choke ballast

      American Electric did this a lot in the 1970s and 1980s for ballasts in residential grade fixtures. These ballasts are also unvarnished and thus often very loud.
