Hope you enjoy this week's video. Let me know your thoughts on Leona, and who you would like to see. We are working on many videos for the next few months and will be back on Saturday as Sunday is the two year Anniversary of her death we will be looking at her final days. Thanks so much for your support, it means everything.

My mother worked for Leona and Harry in the 70’s. She was their banquet manager and oversaw the daily lounge business. I went to private high school in Manhattan, we were not rich, but my mother wanted to keep me away from the public school where kids were dropping out and getting high all day. Every day after school I’d go to the Park Lane Hotel to stay with my mom at work before we’d go home together. Leona was wonderful to both of us. Leona would always come by, ask me how I was, how school was, what I would I like for dinner to eat, chat with my mother briefly, then go to wherever she’d go at work. This went on for a few years and Leona was ALWAYS super nice. I can’t speak to other reports about her, only to what I personally experienced.

@@MythicMindScape21 one more thing about her…, it was actually Donald Trump who got her branded as “the Queen of Mean” with his newspaper connections in the City. He was extremely jealous of her husband Harry Helmsley, who owned his Hotels and properties free and clear of any legal claims and he was a billionaire in very good standing and reputation. Trump wanted some of his properties but she wouldn’t sell. When Harry died, Trump began to increase his attacks against her, even got her in trouble with the IRS. He was seething that Leona inherited the empire and as a businesswoman, presided over it. That set him off because when Harry was alive he never did anything. She really loved Harry, they were very close, but she didn’t handle all her husband’s business, so when he died, it fell to her and she suddenly had to do it. I remember all this because my mother remained friendly with her.

The Helmsley Palace was the most classy hotel/event space I have ever experienced. The company I worked for held luncheon seminars there. The decor, the table settings, the banquet staff, the food, the fresh flower arrangements, everywhere, and even the restrooms were perfect.

Few people have the ambition guts determination and know-how to go as high up the ladder as she clawed her way to get These types of people are usually perfectionists and anything less she would have no part of. This woman left tens of millions to charity upon her death. She was so greatly misunderstood but she had heart and soul of a crusader. I remember Leona Hensley well. Back in my mid twenties, I lived and worked in NYC. My career was in Hotel Management and at one point worked at the Hensley Palace Hotel at 69th. and Madison, I believe it was. At any rate, I worked for her and was familiar with her way of operating her business. Not to mention, her personally and how she behaved to staff and the general public. First, I must admit that she was a very smart business woman in many ways. Leona had an excellent product and knew exactly how to advertise the brand. At one point, earlier in my time at the Hemsley Palace Hotel, I respected and admired her. However, as time passed, I got to know who she really was and that was “ the queen of mean “. She was rootless. Her story from rags to riches was so true. I remember a true story about Leona that was amongst the employees, particularly, her chauffeur and the doorman at both the HPH and the Park Lane Hotel ( where she lived in the penthouse for many years on Central Park South), had a special code as it were. Whenever the Chauffeur arrived at either property, if his hat was off, then, Leona WAS NOT in the car. And if the driver’s hat was on, she WAS IN THE CAR. Well… one day, it was an especially hot day in NYC, the driver pulled up in front of the HPH with his hat OFF and with Leona IN THE CAR and the doorman walked up to the car and said, “ WHERE’S THE BITC- ? “ and to the doorman’s surprise Leona lowered her back tinted window and said, “ THE BITC- IS HERE AND YOU’RE FIRED “. MANY MANY OCCASIONS SIMILAR TO THIS OCCURD. Leona would terminate staff at the drop of a hat sort of speak. She was a mean and hateful person. It’s a real shame because her husband Harry Hemsley was a GREAT GUY/ BUSINESS MAN.

I have to say that the Helmsley Palace was one of the nicest hotels that I have stayed; the staff was excellent.
Leona Helmsley was a horrible human being! (However ..... She was probably right about Trump and Trump about her)
Harry Helmsley was a good businessman But he was an old fool conquered by lust and flattery
(They say there is no fool like a rich old fool. It applies equally to men and women)
Leona had great PR agents. But eventually, even they couldn't keep ahead of her nastiness towards just about anyone she had to deal with on a regular basis; as well as her
outbursts (towards the staff) in front of the guests. It was rumored that Harry was thinking about leaving Leona because he was just too tired and too sick to deal with her
anymore. He wanted to enjoy his retirement and his few waning years. (Did you run across any of that in your research?)

Well well I sure do remember this woman, she was not nice at all except for "Trouble" her lucky dog. Many times I have noticed that women of humble beginnings sure learn their way around how to reach high no matter who they trample along the way. I did not remember about the death of her only son. What is written is she left 5 million in trust to each of her two eldest grand children plus 5 million in cash. None to her youngest two grandchildren, however the WILL was contested and finally in keeping quiet about the inheritance, 6 million was given to Craig and Meegan Panzirer. I think Leona had the opportunity of leaving a good legacy and remembrance; had she lived a decent caring life, work on charities and not concentrate and flaunt her opulence and wealth. In the end, all that glitz left nothing but a bad image of the woman. I saw Lawyer Alan Deshowitz on some photos not a popular man either, and there was her main rival, no comment there might not be good. Thank you for very interesting stories. How about a beautiful woman Dina Merrill? for your lovely long list. Take care. ❤ enjoy them all.

Another excellent watch,I'm from the UK, so didn't know to much about her life.someone once said to understand a person's world view,is to see the world as it was when they were 18. In her case a world in turmoil, and her hard start in life.but this does not excuse her later behaviour. But to some in society she is seen as a gold digging serial marrier, where as to some in society trumps similar behaviour marks him out as a successful alpha male.but are they are they any different?plus Trump had all the advantages in the start of his life.

Yes, there are contradictions, consider all of all the impoverished peers in your country that married rich american heiresses who were title hunting in the 19th century. Sometimes both got what they wanted, sometimes people were left with nothing. Leona and Harry were definitely happy together there is no doubt about that.

@MythicMindScape21 I think you are right on both counts there.even today if people get married it could be for money power ,status , just as they did in the 19th century.time moves on but the motives stay the same.
