That is such a good point about the overconsumption of style inspiration! Normally we don't think of it as a bad thing, but it can totally crowd out your own creative instincts! I have a thought about color theory/rules. I completely agree that rules should not stop you from wearing what you love. They should only be used if they make you happy and add something to your style experience. That said, I do think they are helpful because (just from my own experience) such rules help me find clothes that I love longterm. As someone who LOVES to experiment, sometimes I get swept up in the newness of something, and rules keep me on the right track. For example, I've purchased tops and dresses that I love because they are fun, but then slowly I start to notice how the color makes my skin look dull or my eyes less bright. I'll notice that I don't feel my best the 3rd or 4th time I wear them, and I wear the things less and less. Eventually, I have to sell or donate them. Then this contributes to my overconsumption. I hope that makes sense 😊Again, I do agree with your point that rules shouldn't hold you back!
Layers! I love the idea of layers and layering pieces but with my curvy body the layers all move in different directions at different speeds and I end up looking like the Michelin Man.
Something that helped me a lot, was the step before, when buying, is asking myself if I'm buying a piece of clothing, or try to buy a dream I wish I had or were. For example, if I buy a dress because it reminds me of frolicking through a field, I'm probably never going to wear it, because I wanted to frolic through a field, more so than wear that dress. Same goes for clothes that makes me want to cook (apron dresses come to mind), but I never wear it because it was about wanting to want to cook, more so than the dress itself (I just don't like to use the kitchen I have to use at the moment, and it's like I want to trick myself in wanting to cook by buying stuff instead). Another thing that comes to mind are clothes that makes me wish I was on holiday in Italy, or Spain, rather than actually wearing those clothes. So the question I ask myself is if I liked the clothes, or the advertisements of those clothes. If I like the clothes, or my daydreams of what it could imply. If I can't daydream of wearing it in my real life in anyway, it's a no, even if I love the idea around it. What I bought a few times, which I love, and I love the look of it, but just never wear, are crop tops. I just hate the feeling of my tummy being exposed that way. Crop tops just make me uncomfortable, through I find them very cute and even flattering on my body. And another, I really like dresses, but I almost never wear them BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE POCKETS. It's just so more practical to wear short jeans in the summer because those have pockets. I just never wear my dresses because they're so impractical this way. I'd love to learn to make pockets for my dresses one day, but that might take a while and until then I don't think I'll wear my dresses, but I keep them because I hope to make pockets for them one day.
excellent advice!!! Think about how you really live, look at the things you wear the most and try to analyze why, get things where you can see them because you will forget you even have them, and use the things you took the time, effort and money to buy or let someone else have the use of them.
I always have to make sure that the pretty dresses and tops that I buy are bra-friendly. I know I never wear clothes that require strapless bras (unless it's for an occasion) and as a D cup I can rarely go braless. This really limits my options during the summer but I have to be real with myself.
I have 2 long sleeve shirts from them, they are very nice, not to thick or thin. I have them in black and navy. The thing that i always bought and i have to be careful not to buy anymore, are eyeshadow palettes😅, i love the makeup looks and the colors, BUT i find it to time consuming to create an eye look, to much work😂 im more of a blush girly. But for clothing, i dont have anything that comes to mind. Years back, when i had a lot of crap, i used to buy a lot of heels and never wore them, but thats long ago.😅
Couldn’t agree more about not being too restrictive with style rules. One thing I never hear anyone talk about regarding colour seasons is colour contrast. They focus a lot on colours that are harmonious together, nothing wrong with that of course. But if you’re cool toned and wearing a lot of navy, tan accessories with create colour contrast and make the blue pop even more. Same with pale blue and a butter yellow handbag etc. I say this as someone who loves wearing her colours but yeah, it’s only any good if it makes you happy ☺️✌️
So true. Im a deep winter, and tan/camel is not in my colors But i love the color in accessories, i have 2 scarfs (1 leo),1 belt, 1 pair of loafers and 2 bags in that color oh and a beige trenchcoat and i love them. And navy and tan/camel/beige look so chic. We can wear colors from the seasons that are before and after, for winter those are true winter and dark autumn. But not all the colors will suit us, but wear the ones that you like.
Thank you for a thought provoking video. Sadly I have to warn others about Organic Basics. A year ago I paid $90 Australian dollars for 3 (yes three!) pairs of briefs. They lasted 6 months. I have bought briefs for $3 a pair which lasted for years. I tried to make an ethical choice but got burned.
This was actually super helpful! I find myself wearing the same five things on repeat and I've reorganized my closet and am seeing it with fresh eyes. Pinterest can be great for inspiration but there's no better inspiration than the clothes you already have. I'm off to "Pinterest but in real life" lol
OMG Katie .. the belts! I've never had anyone point this out before! I have exactly the same problem. A display of pretty (mostly Sezane) belts that I literally never wear! I will style one very occasionally, and think they look great in the mirror, but I always take them off at the last minute. They are never actually needed and slightly uncomfortable. Thank you for inspiring me to stop buying belts - well at least I'll try 😉
I'm a huge believer in color theory! It got a color analysis done a few years ago and it was THE best thing I've done for my closet. It was incredibly helpful and introduced me to my now favorite color (which I previously wouldn't have touched with a ten foot pole). It helped me experiment and hone in on a color palette that I feel amazing in. AND I agree that style can feel flat when everything is "correct" or "flattering," color analysis isn't for everyone, and it can absolutely be taken too seriously (it should be a fun, helpful tool, not restrictive).
That's great! I definitely think it can be helpful used the right way. It just feels like it's gone too far sometimes ya know? Like some people are almost so terrified of wearing something that's not 'their colour' that they get stuck in 'analysis paralysis' and forget to enjoy fashion, haha.
I had the realization about basics a few years ago. I also love buying more statement pieces or pieces that just look so beautiful and intricate, but I never used to think about what I would pair with them, and then they’d go unworn. I learned from my friends the value of having a few good basic pieces in my wardrobe. Also, it’s belts, scarves, and hair accessories for me. And bracelets and rings to some extent. I love the look of them on other people but I’ve learned I just don’t like wearing things on or near my hands 😅
Morning Katie I enjoyed your so useful video. Am totally with you on the belts!!! I also have wasted money on Sezane belts that are lying at the bottom of the wardrobe. But I do wear the Taylor with my jeans. But interesting idea that we can love to buy certain things but then not wear them. Think theres a whole new video there.. have a lovely day.
Loved this!! So true about the thing(s) we buy and pretend we will wear. For me it was shoes! I’d buy beautiful shoes and sometimes they were expensive!! If they weren’t comfortable I should’ve returned them immediately bc I was never going to wear them!! It didn’t matter how pretty they looked on a shelf 🙃. All these points rang so true and I don’t think I’ve heard it put so well! Thanks 💕
Not a clothing item, but eyeshadow palettes! I have no business owning more than 5, and have amassed quite the collection. Thankfully I’ve been able to achieve a mental shift and buy maybe 2 a yr now.
I actually started the month considering setting money aside for a colour analysis at Christmas, thinking it will be so eye opening and helpful, I'm going to be so inspired to find my perfect shades and so on. But the more research I did, the less I was convinced. We're naturally drawn to colours that suit us, according to the experts, so I think it could be interesting to reaffirm that. But in that case, why DO we need an expert to tell us what we already know? And on the flip side, I echo exactly what you said. What if you can't find your perfect shade of green in your perfect style of top ever? Or what if your most treasured jacket actually doesn't fall into your season? And what if I don't suit navy blue? Do I have to throw out 80% of my wardrobe in that case? And if I don't, doesn't that mean the entire thing was a pointless exercise? There are people who will really benefit and thrive from it, but if I really break it down, I think I'll feel overwhelmed with information and yet constricted with too many boundaries. I have come to the conclusion I'd rather put the money towards a Clyde trench, whether khaki green falls into my season or not.
Hi! Great tips. I like that your perspective on this topic and share your opinions. My love to buy hate to wear is black clothes and shoes. I think black is so chic but I find it hard to actually wear lol
Completely agree about the 'style rules' being not just restrictive but very confusing, especially something like the Kibbe system which is so prescriptive (if you can even work out your body 'type' in the first place). Re: colours, I had my colour analysis done and I found it incredibly helpful to know where to invest my money- ie, do I invest in a black woolen coat, or a camel one? If I'm dropping a fair amount on a cashmere jumper, do I choose the grey or the tan? Knowing my season helped me realise why I have garments in my wardrobe that I love to look at, but don't actually choose to wear all that often. But YES, agree 100% with another commenter, that pairing colours from different seasons actually looks great, such as warm brown and navy, or grey and khaki, burgandy and camel, etc. This is something overlooked by colour season enthusiasts.
all great points. I think i'm in a good place with my wardrobe but years ago I used to buy a lot of blazers and not really wear them. My upper body doesn't do well with a lot of structure so traditional blazers are not a good look but I like the idea of them. I've sold most of mine and now adays if I wear a blazer, it's the ones with wide lapel and draped bodice.
Love to see you. This content is very helpful to me. I am a shopaholic! I am guilty of so much of what you stated. I have a closet full of beautiful items that are not being worn. So sad😢 I plan on watching your video over and over. Hopefully, it will eventually help curb my spending and get these beautiful pieces I coveted out and enjoyed. Thanks so much. You really are making a difference for us.❤
I really liked this video! One thing that has helped me with my wardrobe recently is just packing away all of the clothes that don’t fit right now. That happens to be a majority of my wardrobe sadly and I’m not giving up on fitting into them again but when I removed them from my closet and left only what fits right now it just mentally and visually made it easier for me to choose things that actually work and I’ve felt better about getting dressed each day. On the color analysis: I’ve let my natural grey grow out over the past two years and I LOVE it but everyone seems to say that if you have grey hair you can’t wear neutral earth tones anymore and you have to wear bright colors and jewel tones. I refuse to go with that! I LOVE neutral colors, they are what I’m drawn to and what I’m most comfortable in so I’m going to keep wearing them whether someone else thinks they are the most flattering or not! My love to buy hate to wear item: scarves! I love the way they look on other people but on me they just look like I’m trying too hard 😅.
‘Smarter’ shoes!! I have in my head that I have a gap in my wardrobe with smart shoes, I buy some and end up selling coz I never wear and feel I am just a trainer girl. The cycle continues… I then go hmmm I really do need some loafers, and I’m on the hunt for loafers even though I sold some not that long ago!! I never learn. It’s a just I case piece. 🙈
Great job in bringing topics that are not already out there! Specially because I agree with everything you said, so it is refreshing to hear 😊 Your channel is getting better and better!
Color analysis helped me find what I love and feel good in. I never would have given my now favorite color a chance before. It's not for everyone but it's been an incredibly helpful tool for me over the past 3 years :)
Loved it all ! Thank you for putting it together. I'm an over consumer of new ideas in some many areas. Currently working toward decluttering for self.
Do you know how many pieces of clothing you own? I found this so interesting, because having too much also inhibits creativity I think. I was shocked when I lasted counted that I owned way more than I thought I did. I would be so curious to know how many pieces you own.
13:10 😂 I always want a great belt, then stop because I always wear the same 2 belts. Still looking for a black leather one though. For me, this item is blazers…
RE color seasons- I think people forget that you can totally wear something out of your season and adjust the rest of your outfit balance it. Color theory is totally relative! A purple will look cooler or warmer based on what other colors and textures it’s mixed with
Blazers and trench coats. Rarely wear them. Where I live spring and fall have almost disappeared and we have a long long summer [last month colder] and a long winter [last month warmer]
On the topic of colour seasoning, I think a lot of people go about it the wrong way. In my opinion these 'rules' should open up experimenting, trying new things that make you more comfortable in the clothes you wear, rather than restricting yourself. It shouldn't be about what not to wear, but more what elements of colours you can look for (like muted or bright colours). I also think it got way out of hand. It's not the end all be all some people make it out to be. You don't have to wear 'your best colours', just 'the colours you love/like to wear', and colour seasons can open up more colours to explore (also more colour palettes, which are fun to explore imo). Another thing I realized is that colours seasons are about creating a harmonious colour palette, but not everyone wants to create a harmonious effect with their outfits. Some people want a more muted look, and some the opposite and want to make an bold impression. Some people want to look edgy. And in all those cases your 'best colours/colour season' probably won't work for what you're trying to express because the goal isn't about harmony. I see it more as a toolbox than a rulebook. Something people can choose for themselves to use, or not, but never to dictate to others. It's not school and it's not an exam you have to pass. It's should be fun for everyone involved.
Katie, I’m planning to go to London, do you have any recommendation where to shop? I’m midsize, and our style is kinda similar so I’m hoping that you can help me 🙏 Thanks! xoxo
Ooh, I don’t live in London so don’t know it super well but if I was going I’d head to Marylebone first as there are so many good shops there now! I’d go to Sézane, Anthropologie, & Other Stories, Me+Em, Reformation, Nobody’s Child - then there’s all the French brands like ba&sh and Maje etc but I don’t always find them super midsize friendly, worth a look though. Have fun!
Ugh I love to buy blazers, coats, and jackets but I live in a place where these are used like 2 months of the year 😢. I've banned myself from buying any more going forward
#4 all the way. It's not just color and body shape, it's age, social class, race, gender, literally all of these things have a say in how we feel we should dress, whether we like it or not, and they shouldn't (except for professional reasons, but personal style is not the top priority in those situations anyway). Needing to wear physically flattering things always is just straight-up misogyny and everyone ends up looking like the same hourglass. The goal should always be to style the clothes we already love in ways we find acceptable, not have someone prescribe what we should wear without referencing our preferences.
Hey Katie! Could you please share what bracelet is this at 7:47? So beautiful! I'm a silver and moonstone lover! Thx so much in advance! Great video, btw. 😊
Katie all these points are excellent. I only have one question. I’ve never tried a bodysuit. Don’t you use a bra with them? I just think that having marks of the bra wouldn’t look nice.
I think it depends on the bodysuit and your chest size. Personally I wouldn’t need to wear a bra with the organic basics one, they’re quite supportive in that way because theyre stretchy 😊
I think what you are talking about is conspicuous consumption. You need only look at some of your fellow "influencers" to see it. It took Josie days to move all of her clothes and accessories to the Cotswolds. When I was working, on Sunday evening, I would pick out five outfits for the week and put them on hangers together. So I knew on Sunday what the rest of the week looked like in terms of wardrobe. I didn't waste time figuring out what to wear.
I buy too much when planning a vacation-things that don’t actually fit in my daily wardrobe. Watching influencers on their travels has been a downfall for my pocketbook😩
Unpopular opinion shared: I don’t agree with color analysis. Don’t get me wrong, I think your colors undertones are so important to really wear what you buy…just like in makeup, but there are some color choices in color analysis, which are downright extreme. Plus we can change our hair color etc, so what’s the point in looking at the whole coloring instead of just skin undertone :S ?
RE color seasons- I think people forget that you can totally wear something out of your season and adjust the rest of your outfit balance it. Color theory is totally relative! A purple will look cooler or warmer based on what other colors and textures it’s mixed with

Layers! I love the idea of layers and layering pieces but with my curvy body the layers all move in different directions at different speeds and I end up looking like the Michelin Man.
Can totally relate
Lolllll I know what you mean 😅
That white top and burgundy lipstick is so flattering on you! ❤
Yes! What lipstick are you wearing? It’s very flattering on you. @katie_louise
Thank you! Lisa Eldridge ‘Velvet Duchess’

I know Uniqlo this season released tank tops with inbuilt bras
I finally realized this and decided never to buy something I can't wear a regular bra with. Hopefully I remember this haha!
Me too! I'm also a D cup and realized that sadly thin strap tops are not for me lol

Thank you Maria 🥰
So with you on the colour seasons. Wear what you love and makes you feel good 😊
Color analysis helped me find what I love and feel good in. I never would have given my now favorite color a chance before. It's not for everyone but it's been an incredibly helpful tool for me over the past 3 years :)
Loved it all ! Thank you for putting it together. I'm an over consumer of new ideas in some many areas. Currently working toward decluttering for self.
Love that 🤍
The most helpful video I have ever seen. 😍 Thank you. ♥️
Frilly blouses for me. I always end up selling them after wearing them maybe twice and feeling like a fraud
Wow Katie - you look absolutely amazing, hair and that lip colour!
Awh thanks!
Awh that makes me so happy to hear!
This was very helpful for me; you nailed it. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I really enjoyed this video 😊 sweet and cute! thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutly agree with your opinion on having fun with clothing!
Totally agree with every Point ❤ 😊 very helpful, thank you
Thank you!
I have been thinking about tip 1 and 3 a lot lately!!
A purple will look cooler or warmer based on what other colors and textures it’s mixed with
for me it is blazers! I love them but I feel unconfortable wearing them. I prefer cardigans
Blazers and trench coats. Rarely wear them. Where I live spring and fall have almost disappeared and we have a long long summer [last month colder] and a long winter [last month warmer]
Ooh interesting!
Def heels for love to buy, hate to wear 🙈
I love the idea of wearing a Blazer , have had a few ones, always got rid of them because they don't fit my Lifestyle and body type.
So true!!
Excellent video! Thank you
Thank you!
Yep, belts and button down shirts
Have fun!
@@katie_louise ooh sorry I thought you do. Now I’m embarrassed. Thanks for the recommendation! ♥️ I’m adding them to my list.
@@Nisaiueo haha no need to be embarrassed! 😂 no problem 🥰
Of course! It’s this one - rstyle.me/+khBAf9KRSMotyfhhOLAXWg
Love it , love the red lippy may i ask what brand / shade ? X
It’s Lisa Eldridge ‘Velvet Duchess’ 🥰
Hi do you have a makeup tutorial?
Katie all these points are excellent. I only have one question. I’ve never tried a bodysuit. Don’t you use a bra with them? I just think that having marks of the bra wouldn’t look nice.
I think it depends on the bodysuit and your chest size. Personally I wouldn’t need to wear a bra with the organic basics one, they’re quite supportive in that way because theyre stretchy 😊
@@katie_louise Thanks for the prompt response. I'll try them out 😊
Katie, what size did you get your Carlo jacket? It's so beautiful, and i hope Sézane would bring it back this fall.
I found it on eBay, was so excited haha. It’s an EU 36 - you can definitely size down it runs big
Loafers! I love them but don’t wear them. I have 4 pairs!
What lipstick are you wearing?
Lisa Eldridge ‘Velvet Duchess’ ☺️
I buy too much when planning a vacation-things that don’t actually fit in my daily wardrobe. Watching influencers on their travels has been a downfall for my pocketbook😩
This is so easily done! I have done this before too
can i ask where is your closet/shelving from?
IKEA 😍
Can you share the lipstick shade you are wearing?
Of course! It’s Lisa Eldridge ‘Velvet Duchess’
