They are deemed leftovers because they are no longer ideal mates if the guy wants to have children. At that age, it is more likely for the girl to find a life partner rather than to start a family. You need to study more about human biology, especially on the risk of conceiving a child after 35 for females. Apart from increasing chances of the child having genetic defects and down syndrome, the mother also risks higher complications during delivery.

Nope. Well, my parents are because they are very open minded and I've been Americanized, but to my conservative grandparents and other family members living in China, they think my PhD interfered with my marriage potential. Financial success is fine, but at end of the day, your loved ones provide you with more happiness than your job, and marriage means finding a love one that can accompany you through life but I wasted that time getting a PhD instead, lol. Fortunately I live in US and don't plan to date/live in China so there's a bit less of that mentality. I am a little intimidated by my upcoming trip back home to China tho, lol, because it will be a week of various relatives asking me why I'm not married and leftover women blah blah blah. I enjoy learning about aspects of contemporary Asian cultures, and have found “Asian Boss” informative and entertaining. Could you prepare more videos along these lines for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore as these are majority-Chinese societies that are evolving along different trajectories than PRC (China)? Thanks

Didn't feel like the interviewees had a Shanghainese accent. SH is like New York, a lot of the ppl living there don't have a native accent.
Like there are a ton of ppl who live in New York w/o a New York accent.

I've not decided if the term "left over woman " is offensive yet. When your 21 your in college or starting your career you haven't started to live yet why tie yourself down to a man?

Well said. So honest. I was married at 27 and regret it so bad. My ethnicity is Chinese but i don't live in China. Should have chased my dream. Should have lived for myself. Should have pursue my career. Should have carved my path with my own tools. Instead of tying myself down to a man and waste my life living for his purpose.

Is that matter if you wanna get married or not, just do whatever you want, I hope family can support too

If the goal of marriage is to produce children then before 30 is best. If it is to produce a happy loving couple that can provide a loving home to children then after 30 is better. That is true everywhere including China. In reality in China it is men that are being leftover more than women. That is primarily happening not because of successful career women but because of China's One Child Policy.
