Nice review! I am J30 #87 here from Northern Wisconsin. Had mine installed in Spring of 2015. Best Mod Ever! No problems at all. The only modification I made was the addition of no see um netting, although I use it routinely in minus teens and -20's F on winter trips. Enjoy!
Wow....One of the OG UM owners. I love getting that feedback after 6 years of ownership. The biggest struggle I'm dealing with so far is lots of dust coming in from rear tailgate area...thru the window...As well as my passenger side window doesn't seem to 100% sealed...Definitely nothing major, but for what I paid for this thing...still a bit disappointing. The dust coming in seems to be a very common problem. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
Thanks....A big part of the reason I pulled the trigger was watching him and the Road Chose Me...These guys literally have and still do live out of their Jeeps and these tops have stood the test of time...Seeing is believing!!!
I agree...The real value for the wife and I is that we constantly are on the move most trips...and the setup and take down is so easy...and the lower weight is fantastic too...
I love the new setup! Will definitely be following along more to see how the Ursa Minor performs. The colour matched paint looks really really nice too👍🏼.
I think the Ursa Minor is the best "rooftop" tent system. I would love to have one. I am so impressed by your Jeep. I have a black one too, same year, and while it looks great, it looks clean for about 2 minutes after I wash it and if a leaf falls on it it scratches. I dont know how you keep yours so immaculate. Great tour of it though, congrats and worth the wait.
Thanks Sand P. Ive got a thing for black cars ever since I was a kid....yes they are a pain, but they just look better than any other color when clean in my opinion. It helps that mine isn't my daily driver, but even sitting on the side yard it doesn't take long before there is a coat of dust and dirt on it...
@@395jnky Well you really take good care of it and its impressive. I saw an Ursa Minor in person at Rebel Off Road a few months ago and wow, its the way to go. Thanks as always for sharing your experiences. I really enjoy them.
I own a 2020 JL Rubicon with an Ursa Minor. Been traveling full time and living in mine for the past three months. You might regret getting it color matched black if you spend any time in a hot environment. My top is white and it can get uncomfortably warm even with it fully open.
Sounds like an amazing 3 months. Our last RTT had a black roof, so I totally understand the disadvantages of not having it white. That said, we are only ever in the tent in the evening after the sun is down and we usually open the windows as soon as it set up. The morning is indeed a different story...and this is the reason I love the black top. I can use all the help I can get to help motivate mama goose to get up early with me... :) LOL
glad I'm not the only one who made that mistake with the awning bolts ;-(. easy fix. . .the camper is a total game changer and allows me to just pick up and go. Love it.
I had 3 JKU's and wanted one of these. Never pulled the trigger. Now I have a 4R and if I ever traded this for another Jeep I definitely would go with an Ursa Minor. This would be the time to trade the 4R since its worth $4-5K more than I paid 2 years ago. Problem is I love it. Still love watching Jeep content though.
Man, so sweet. 8 months of I can't wait and here it is. On the flip side, ow I'm looking I to one which the wife clearly asked, does it ever stop. My reply, honey, I am the Ultra Enigizzer 🐇. Little off track. I seen a video of your jeep being painted on canvas. That was truly heart warming and awesome. Bit hey, now you can get a 2nd painting. I'll send you some pics of the 3 Jeeps we have fully ready for the trail but only one for the Rock Crawling. Relly a sweet jeep. The iKamper going to be a Hamidown 3the girls?
Thanks Rick....And my wife asks the same thing...I promised that after the UM it will stop...LOL....maybe... Yes, the painting was a really cool gesture from one of my subscribers...the guy is ultra talented and was humbled for the offer to paint Bele. The iKamper was sold a few months back when I thought I was a few weeks out from getting my UM...So needless to say Bele really hasn't seen any trail time overlanding...But now she's Back and greater then ever! Happy Trails
Congrats on your rig upgrade. For now it is pretty much the best overland rig in my opinion. Notice I said for now. The best Jeep Ursa Minor rig combination by far will be with a Jeep 4xE and a Ursa Minor. The Jeep 4xE will become the Prius of overland vehicles in the near term. Because of the ability of the 4xE to run the automatic temperature controlled A/C or heater for a small amount of fuel overnight means you can boondock anywhere anytime regardless of the elements. Not sure what I mean, simply watch any UA-cam video of camping or living in a Prius hybrid or specifically look at the explanation on Cheap RV Living interview with Bob wells as to why a hybrid makes the best camping rig. Now add in the capabilities of a Jeep and overlanding takes on a whole new way of boondocking way back in the trails.
We love it...We especially love the fact that basically there are two separate areas that we can each get ready at night and in the AM. I get ready downstairs as the wife gets the penthouse suite all to herself!
Great option for wrangler owners, I remember way back when I had my wrangler and thought about maybe going this route. Curious if you'll have more reviews on how it performs under windy conditions, and cold temperatures. Awesome video as always 👍, maybe one day see you on the trail.
Can be hard going in the wind. I’ve definitely had to steer into the wind with mine. I’ve slept in mine down to 40°. Okay with the right sleeping bag or an electric blanket or electric mattress pad.
Hi Paul - Thanks for the comment and good to hear from you again. As far as the bathroom breaks go...I found the biggest challenge was when I first started using a RTT...That was even a hassle and eventually had grown accustomed to remembering to go to the BR right before we went to bed. We don't find ourselves having to get up up in the middle of the night to take care of business much anymore...it helps that we go to bed late and are early risers...Happy Trails
That is awesome! We love ours too. We would love to spend some time in Montana camping. Perhaps one day I will make the trek out that way. Thanks for the comment.
10 mins from my place in Chula Vista. If you ever make it back down here ping me. Burritos and beer on me. :) Nice of Shane and Chris to come in on a Sunday and get you handled. Those guys are burning it at both ends these days. I believe they are building and installing 4 per week. Mine is on order also now. See you out there one of these days. 👍🏻👍🏻😎🥃
Last October, I received my Ursa Minor Pop Up Camper for my JLU. Best investment, but I found the cushions not as comfortable, so I just picked up a 3-inch memory foam pad on Amazon and that became an easy fix.
Yes....When I got the new top put on I didn't have time to tint the rear window. You'll be pleased to know it is now tinted and you can't see our pillows any longer...LOL
I agree...Getting ready in the evenings are perfect...Mama Goose upstairs and I sit on the Goose Gear doing or things like removing contacts, changing etc....I can only imagine how nice this will be in inclement weather....Congrats on your upgrade!
WOW!!!!! Nice, but E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E!!!! I had a hard time putting the money down for my current RTT, let alone something like this. I mocked up a cost on what I would want and $2200 seems a bit steep for matching paint on the shell and roof, just saying. Also, if you want someone else to paint it, you have no option for white gel coat on the shell, either texture or paint match ($1200). Like I said, it looks really nice and makes sense, but that cost is a no go for me, unless I get lucky and find a whole bunch of money.
Thanks for the comment RK. I was pretty set on color match since the only other option was the textured finish which I wasn't too interested in for the main body... And yes, it hurt and was expensive...but something I was fortunate enough to swing and we'll get plenty of use out of it...
I'm not sure what's more mind blowing? It's $10,000 with an eight month wait or it's $10.000 with an eight month wait and there is still no other competing company making this design.
I hope mamma goose gets one for her Jeep!!!! Would make fir some great camping. Her camp set up verses your camp set up!!! Looks great. Do they make one fir TJ’s?
The UM is only made for the 4 doors...Thankfully...otherwise Mama Goose would want one for hers...LOL. They only make these for the JK and JL 4 doors unfortunately...
@Mike....Yes..Chris and few others that I know that have the UM gave me the confidence I needed that this was a good investment. Thanks for the comment. Happy Trails!
Thank you. And yes we can. I purchased a 4" memory foam mattress that I will be replacing the inside cushions with the 4". Should be nice and cushy then....Happy Trails
Nice looking setup Daniel!!!! Just curious what prompted you to switch from the iKamper to the Ursa Minor? The iKamper has more space and I saw Momma Goose’s comment about the Ursa Minor is “much cozier”. Just Wondering your thought process. Thanks. PS: I really enjoy your channel and videos. Happy 25th!!!!!!
Hi Jeff...We were intrigued with the ease of setting up and taking down in record time. Even though the iKamper was quick, this is 5X faster. And since we generally bounce from one spot to the next each day we value the time savings. But the biggest motivating factor was weight...and weight in the areas in matters most. If I recall correctly, my weight savings is about 100 pounds net. Bele is a heavy girl and this helped a lot. Especially on the highway and wheeling. As far as "Cozy"...She was indeed referring to the smaller area. We knew this was going to be smaller and it is...but we aren't very large people and the only time we are in the tent is when we are sleeping. There is more than enough room for us to be comfortable sleeping, and even watching a movie. The iKamper came in real handy to bring our bags up, etc and put them to the side...but with the Goose Gear, I can get ready down low, while she is getting ready up in the tent, and we can still leave everything down below. Another great feature will be able to simply start the Jeep, turn on the heater...and BAM...heat rises and we are warm. Lastly, being able to have Sierra in the Jeep with us close by to make sure she doesn't eat my seats will be a huge benefit...LOL
It is awesome and looks great...just not sure I could ever give up the king size bed in my iKamper. This actually surprised the hell out of me. Between not being able to use the expeds or having to use a ladder to get out at night if I did...I just don't get it. They look so completely awesome though and lower the COG a lot.
Thanks....Yes...giving up the King Size bed was worrisome...and at the end of the day we really did love the iKamper, but the extra room up there really only allowed us to bring up our bags and just really have a bunch of unused space. The tradeoff is exactly as you called it with the lower COG and especially weight savings of about 100 pounds...and the ease of going from camp to camp each day will really make our lives easier...As easy as the iKamper was...this UM is still significantly easier and quicker especially not having to inflate and deflate the expels every time we move camp. Happy Trails.
I did the math months ago and I don't remember exactly the difference between the two tops, but overall I saved about 80 pounds since I don't have the Rhino Rack Roof Rack or the RTT on top anymore. Noticeable difference especially wheeling...Less sway and rocking back and forth on the trail with the lower center of gravity.
I love it, although I think it may work better if I relocate it near the top of the Jeep on a swing arm...this way when I'm driving it wont be too high, but at camp I can get a clear view of the sky.
Do you have a video showing or talking about the weBoost with the OTR antenna install? I just received mine and am wondering about the height and where to mount it. Do you like it? Thanks in advance!
Not yet. But I can tell you that we like it, although I am going to relocate it a bit higher on the Jeep on a swing mount...this way when I'm driving it wont be too high, but at camp I can swing it up and get it nice and high to improve signal. Good luck!
@@395jnky Thank you for the reply. I thought of that also, I saw how low yours was and thought I was might put mine higher, but then how would the wind affect it? I also ordered an RV internal antenna (second antenna) so that when I go camping I can disconnect the internal Jeep antenna and run the cable from the unit outside the jeep into the tent to get a direct signal in the tent and hopefully use my laptop in the tent. It takes the RV antenna plus an adapter, both of which they had in stock. I asked weBoost about it and they said it would work but they were not aware of anybody trying this yet.
Can Ursa Minor install this J30 onto a Wrangler that only has a soft top?.....if so, then you can plan to order this J30 from the get go and never order or buy a wrangler with a hard top! Let us know!
Well originally when I ordered it I was told a 6 month lead time, but with anything else these days everyone is slammed busy and was unfortunately delayed another couple months.
Come on man...Mama Goose reads these comments...She'd kill me if she knew...LOL You can go to the Ursa Minor website and build one to your specs and it will give you a price. Happy Trails
? Why did you not look at the Safari EXL Company ( No need to remove a panel to reach tent & you can open the top from inside!! Your swing also only one side / the other Awing wraps 3 sides with rain Curtain or Mosquito Curtain a extra 9 feet all around you to cock & Hang out! What was the cost for yours $$$
Not expect with that. I put rust oleum high heat on my aluminum skid plates. Paint sticks well but some of it came off when I sratched or hit something under. Find black latches online or ask ursa minor about it. Good luck.

Congratulations! Looks great. How much weight does the earth some minor add over the stock hard top? Appreciate it. Enjoy.
Great video! How does the 2nd person get up in there and replace the panel. Love to hear your wife's thoughts on it too sometime
Once both people are up there you just slide the small hatch in place and replace the cushion...Not too difficult at all.
Can you order the roof tent and install it yourself ?
Does this help with fuel economy? I’m getting 3-5 less mpg with mine 😒
Great video! Kind of off topic, but how do you like your Weboost?
Where is the location at with the time stamp 9:20?! It is beautiful! Do you mind sharing coordinates?
Sorry Jake...I was told in confidence about this location by a close friend and he swore me to secrecy....LOL
Very cool! Would love own one someday.. so I’ll have room to wash mah butt. 😂
LOL. Thanks JR.
That is an awesome set up though #loaded up
Thanks Kenneth
Is Momma Goose going to be able to get up there after a few adult beverages?
LOL...barely 🤪
LOL...I almost stopped working today as soon as I saw this comment come thru...Too funny...and we will see.
395jnky So what is the plan when she has to find a bush at 2:30 in the morning.
@@sparkyofsocal don’t need to plan that cuz that is not an issue for me 😉

How long did it take them to install it at their shop?
About 2-3 hours.
How does the Ursa Minor affect road noise in the cabin?
Not too bad...A random rattle from the front latches which I hear is common...
How much is that??
What did you do with the original hard top. I’m looking at getting this but no place to keep the original hard top.
I ended up selling my to a neighbor who just happened to buy a Jeep. Timing was perfect.
Very nice!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
To worm shell from sun> white roof better then black
Can Ursa Minor install this J30 onto a Wrangler that only has a soft top?.....if so, then you can plan to order this J30 from the get go and never order or buy a wrangler with a hard top! Let us know!
Yes it can...The soft top will just be replaced with the UM...
I see my patch LOL
100%
Modern day VW bus camper!
Right?!?!?!
Why did it take 8 months?
Well originally when I ordered it I was told a 6 month lead time, but with anything else these days everyone is slammed busy and was unfortunately delayed another couple months.
Can you get locking latches?
You don't need to. Because the top can only be lifted once you pull the rip cord from the inside of the Jeep....
@@395jnky good point
Looks dope!
Thanks 510!!!
How much was your Ursa Minor?
Come on man...Mama Goose reads these comments...She'd kill me if she knew...LOL
You can go to the Ursa Minor website and build one to your specs and it will give you a price. Happy Trails
@@395jnky I understand
11 Grand or more to still sleep in a tent on top of your car and have no break from wind, rain and weather conditions.. makes no sense to me..
Yah...I have a tendency to do a lot of things most people don't understand...LOL
Spray the latches into black
Right....Maybe remove and powder coat or ???. I'm afraid paint will just flake and chip...
Not expect with that. I put rust oleum high heat on my aluminum skid plates. Paint sticks well but some of it came off when I sratched or hit something under. Find black latches online or ask ursa minor about it. Good luck.
