Mild or wild? My situation felt far more real than most horror stories I read about (I take them with a grain of salt).

So Strahd created dissent in the party, causing them to turn on one another. Divide and conquer. I'd make that the theme of the campaign.

Haha I would've loved to play it that way. It would've been a stretch in this scenario to attribute it to Strahd, but I did use their division against them at a few points that worked well for my purposes.

Good insight, it's not very often that you hear about the difficult decisions that everyday DMs have to face when the game goes sour. I have found that in my early days DMing there were a lot of 'bad' players that had a hard time meshing with other people in the group. The important thing to remember is that every game needs good players and good DMs to make them truly epic.
I have had many shameful moments as a DM. Instead of ending a campaign that wasn't going anywhere, I instead decided to 'teach my problem players a lesson', and set up many no-win situations all right in a row, just so I could 'prove to them that I was better at this game. It ended multiple friendships and to this day was one of the biggest regrets in my DMing career. It's not quite a DMing nightmare, but sometimes there are bad games, and it's okay to let them go.

Absolutely, and I know you're not alone in those regrets. Thank you for sharing your own experience.
I'd also add that even good players can act badly sometimes. Many people I play with have played with me many times. Sometimes it's a bad game and you gotta chalk it up to "not everything works out." Sometimes players just don't mesh well and it causes divisive situations that make you think, "Where on earth did that come from?" :P

Best decision I made: Currently running 2 groups of 5 through out of the abyss campaign. Each group is aware there is another group in the underdark venturing on a similar quest. Their decisions effect each other but they may not realize it until much later. This is creating a fun environment where the groups stay small but still feel connected to the same story line. I do allow occasional merging of the groups but I limit it as much as possible because 10 players is hard to manage.

I like the idea of shared-setting games for any DM willing to do the juggling :)

I’m lucky enough to never have that happen
I did kill a PC once because the player wouldn’t play well with others

I'm glad to hear you haven't encountered such a problem. It's a rough situation. I remember the first time PCs died; they blamed me for a while (they thought I was unfair because they made assumptions on limited information) but years later they knew it wasn't my fault.

You & Opal are SO AWESOME!
At this point, I'm just liking everything you put out, and commenting to push you up on the "algorithm". Because you really ARE awesome, and deserve to pop up on every D&D lovers feed!🤣😍🤣😍🤣😍🤣
But: I REALLY have gotten great take-aways from EVERY Flute's Loot video and/or article I've seen. I'm so glad you're continuing to put in the effort & thoughtfulness, even though developing a fan base and audience takes time.

I know we'll probably have some 'dud' videos along the way, but we'll try to make our content awesome :D

Great video! Sub-scry is also an amazing pun, love that so much.
This is interesting to me, because whilst PVP led to your group needing to split, my games are the opposite. There's often character conflict in my games, with player characters arguing with each other, having very different strategies and insights towards the world. But they have ties that force them to work together, like a common enemy, shared backstory, or the overall plot of the campaign. I guess I would compare my campaigns - both ones where I'm a player and the DM - to Guardians of the Galaxy: a group of misfits that clash often, but at the end of the day, they're a team and they have each other's backs. Only towards the end of the campaign do we see whether or not this team remains cohesive or falls apart.
Is it difficult to run games like that? Absolutely. But it's fun and interesting to have the party's enemy not just be the BBG, but also themselves.
This video has sparked some ideas of alternate ways to run my games, so thank you for that! Have a lovely day and I hope your DMing days don't end up this rough so often.

Thank you! I'll have to bring back the pun, haha.
Players can disagree, certainly. It happens all the time; however, sometimes it's mean-spirited and tense. Sometimes it's difficult to know if everyone in the group is perceiving it in the same way, which is one reason I tried giving a warning in the moment to make it clear how I felt.

      @@FlutesLoot Certainly! It's a great pun!
Absolutely, it's important for everyone to be on the same page when it comes to PVP in D&D, otherwise it can spiral into something like what happened in your video. So the resolution you came to was a smart one that seemed like it worked well in the end! DMing two campaigns at once though sounds exhausting, so props to you for pulling through with it.

Thanks for sharing... I was reminded of the most important thing you should do first when playing poker... looking around the room and deciding which table to play at. Basically, it's the people that are around that table... I think in some ways, even before session 0, it's about bringing in/gathering the right people that are going to be around that table at session 0 and hopefully they won't be, as stated, just head -nodders.

Yeah, it's a skill to develop. I feel like I just leveled up in poker to level two.
