Player agency is players experiencing the freedom to make impactful choices tied to a game’s outcomes. It is the magic sauce that assures players their choices matter. It encourages them to invest time and energy into a shared gaming experience. Without it, your game is effectively dead. Here's how to know if you have player agency and how to improve your game.

Just take Fey Touched. +1 to Int, Wis, or Cha, Misty Step and take Silvery Barbs as the Divination spell.
i am not about to support an *ss who use ai gen images
Made a mix between Tyrant (AKA Mr X), Golgotha (Birkin, AKA "G") & Nemesis from the Resident Evil series. Instead of fangs, a vertical tear opens up in his chest with what look like a mix of long teeth & ribcage bones forming a vertical maw & a number of large, purple "eyes" growing inside. Instead of a tail, a long tendril growing from either of the arms with a hardened, calcified spike at the end. Claws are the metacarpal bones elongating & bursting out from the knuckles, sharpening into claws while the actual fingers are "hanging" from the palms. Also made it a Simic Hybrid for manta fins to synch with the level 6 jump boost & the underarm tendrils.
Am I the only one who feels like Ireena is a very useless character and just feels like a walking plot device? I really tried to think of a way to make her more interesting but it is really difficult, because you can basically place her most interesting ,,character trait" (her being Strahd´s reincarnated love) onto any other npc. I think that´s also the reason why I have seen so many groups give either Ezmeralda, or a party member the Reincarnated Soul of Tatiyana. The story works well without her, so why bother to include her at all? Still, I would like to find a way to keep her in the story, especially since there are already so few important female NPCs, so if anyone has an idea how to improve her character, I would love to her that :)
You're not the only one. I used the sidekick rules from Tasha's to progress her usefulness. Her character traits were contrastingly noble compared to Strahd.
Awesome this is great. I enjoy 5e but find that Wizards of the Coast just come up with the most boring material. I for one, will only buy and play Third Party material. Can't wait to play my first Gunslinger after this.
in my campaign , Strahd is god. I fib his actions and spells to make sure my players suffer, but not un-winnable! definitely winnable. Stats and spells he poses are more like guidelines. ALWAYS make the fight fun and interesting . dont stick to just "WeLl ThE StAtS BlOcK SaYs He CaNt" no no no.. within his castle his word is law. to kill him in his castle The players need to be STRONG AND SMART.. Make the fight FUN For your players and for you! (the DM) by doing this you will ensure your players have fun, and you do as well! Also I don't follow HP.,, I just wait until everyones gets to do something cool and attack and do a bunch of damage. if you follow stats to a T, itll be boring!!
Big differences in our methodologies, but I'm sure you have fun too.
My wizard and my friend paladin moved in together, made a cottage in the forest, with a stable for their mounts, a room full of plushies for their adoptive daughter, a training ground, a research lab for my wizard and a big bedroom. When they are adventuring, the wizard simulacrum guard the house (and keep making alchemist stuff, like making healing potion) with the help of the raven familiar, and of course the place is magically protected. My wizard is STACKED with magical item she more than once even crafted herself, like her arcane grimoire +3, or bought, like her cloack of the stars (the simulacrum have the cloack of protection). She made a clone for all her friends and her family, and she as a contigency to resurect her in case off. She also invested in the material needed to cast almost all spells that have requirements having a gold cost, like draconic transformation.
Beautiful! I like how you have ways to express your character with the in-game wealth and that you have freedom of choice and time to do so.
there are a lot of secrets, i would recomend to read the npc description, there are some MAJOR things hidden there that are not mentioned in game often
Too true
Has anyinw told you you look exsxtly like david thewlis?
Nah that's a new one!
One thing I did the last time i ran CoS was giving Strahd his old greatsword (the one normally wielded by his animated armour) and a spell scroll of antimagic field. Using some vamp spawns to pen in the party, the amulet of ravenkind and the sunsword were basically useless as Strahd stabbed and bit at his leisure. This led to a battle based around positioning as the cleric and paladin tried to place themselves in a way were at elast one of them could bring some sunshine. I still remember the "YES!!!" my warlock let out when Strahd's Legendary Resistances ran out and he rolled a nat 1 for his concentration on the antimagic.
You found a fun way for your group to make the fight more dynamic :)
Ran the campaign a few times now, picking it back up tonight. Great tips given
Tip #1, go find 2nd Edition Ravenloft so you can run it with Dark Lord Strahd not sex offender registry Strahd
Right on
Divination wizard is incredibly powerful at certain tables, and not because of portent at all. Its 6th level feature allows you to regain a slot lower than the one you casted with. While this may not seem all to impressive for most tables, there’s a variant rule called spell points. By converting into spell points, this means that that Scrying spell you casted actually only took half the cost of a 1st level spell slot. That Arcane Eye also only took 1 point net, and your Clairvoyance and Truesight each only took 2 points, reducing the net cost of them down to a 1st level spell slot. I do not take Divination Wizard for Portent lol.
Do you have any suggestions for running it on a smaller scale? I have twelve weeks to run my game and I don’t know how to run it without cutting out a ton of content.
Tell the players in-game and out-of-game that they will need to escape Barovia by the end of the timeline your group has, or the characters perish. You can make this clear with the march of the damned that parade from the castle. Make it clear that their choices matter, but they'll want to focus on finding ways to escape Barovia and/or fight Strahd. Playing with that clear expectation should do the trick to influence how they play. As for you, make it clear to them what they should focus on. Madame Eva's card reading should involve Eva pushing them to find everything she prophesies if they want to live. You can cut out a lot of random encounters or add roleplaying to them so they're interesting, and the players can get information about different locations through them. Don't be afraid to make statements as the DM to speed things up. "This isn't a place where you'll find more than basic gear in shops, and the prices are highly inflated." "You've explored this area sufficiently." "You have cleared this area of danger and areas of interest."
Stella is the NPC I messed the most with. She was not the destined ally, but she was both an NPC to rescue, an allied combattant and one of their most powerful enemies. - Having been messed with by incomplete and unstable magic from Viktor, I made her into a Shifter (Swiftstride) - Lady Wachter had taken possession of the Vallakovich wedding dress before torching Vargas' mansion when the party made her into the new burgomaster, and in order to part with it the party had agreed to have the Abbott rid Stella of her madness. - Cured, Stella refused to return to Wachterhaus, begging the party for asylum and protection from her devil-worshipping family. - The Abbott's divine magic being twisted (I feel like the Abbey is a bit like the Island of Dr Moreau), she became bestial, but tame. I gave her a few levels of Beast Barbarian. - At some point she was captured by Strahd when they teleported to the Amber Temple without her. - Strahd sent Rahadin to trade the Tome of Strahd in exchange for the safe return of Stella. They refused and killed Rahadin. Strahd turned her into a vampire spawn. - Stella now guards Castle Ravenloft as a Swiftstride Shifter Beast Barbarian with a Vampire Spawn template, and equipped with some of the stuff from Strahd's vault. The result of a mix of chaotic arcane magic, corrupted divine magic and Dark Powers influence.
That's a rough time for Stella :P I did something similar when the party asked the Abbot to cure her.
I feel like the Icon of Ravenloft gives a much bigger boost to the party than the Holy Symbol of Revenkind. Just for carrying the Icon, the entire party is under Protection form Evil and Good, making all of Strahd's attacks at disadvantage (or cancelling his advantage if he's invisible), and none of his Charm abilities can work against the party. And if they're immune to Charm, it makes it much harder to convince a player character to give up the Sunblade...
Good point!
Dude thanks for tip #10 I could use that for all games . Give the minions personality
Always a good idea!
Goliath Rune Knight fighter. I get the stone skin effect so I go all out. I can dual wield Great Swords in large form.
Nice! It'd be nice if your DM helped you get a cleave ability, too.
Where does it say that surprised combatants get their reaction once their turn comes up in init order? I'm trying to understand this surprise thing. Everything else you said makes sense. Also say three players are surprising an enemy from behind, does only the first person attacking get ADV? Like when they attack the enemy immediately "sees" everyone and the next two players, though they got surprise, no long have ADV from being hidden?
The rule about reactions and surprise is in the Surprise section of p.189 of the PHB. It's the last paragraph of that section. "If you’re surprised, you can’t move or take an action on your first turn of the combat, and you can’t take a reaction until that turn ends." For your second question about advantage, it's gonna be up to the DM whether the characters are hidden or not (the actual source of advantage on the attacks in a surprise context). Many DMs, especially in the comments section of this video, object to it being that simple/unintuitive.
I'm running the game now. Session 2 is tomorrow. But I played with a DM from a diffrent group, who had Irena go with Esmeralda. Whenever we met up with them in towns or on the road to trade secrets while we built our alliances was always a highlight.
That's a great way to handle those characters
I'm crafting a high elf Reborn Undead Warlock Pact of the Tome who's unwillingly bound to a powerful Banshee and indirectly to Nintra Siotta the Archfey Lady of Ill Omens,, . She's a Banshee herself seeking to solve the mystery of her death 💀☠️
Ooo that's really fun!
Warlock That has a patriot of a fey goddess Rhiannon a good witch 🧙♀️ ✨️
Ik I'm rather late here but I'm a newer DM and am about to run curse of strahd what are some ways to encourage RP between players. I ran a smaller campaign and it went rather fast due to minimal RP and I'd like to assist in encouraging it.
I always recommend saying so upfront if you want players to roleplay more. Sometimes they don't RP because they don't want to hog the spotlight. Give them inspiration when they RP. Reward RP with NPCs giving them information, resources, or generally acting more favorable toward the party. I've seen a lot of DMs never reward RPing, so players start putting less effort into it.
Had an idea earlier where a fighter's lover died in combat, and so he swears to conquer death itself to bring her back.
That's a new one! Sounds cool.
My own Curse of Strahd game is a successor game to a previous Curse of Strahd game. Its set 25 years after the original, time has advanced some, NPCs have changed, lots of homebrew, etc. But one thing I did is give them a false card reading. The NPC who gave it to them is the one who actually brought them to Barovia to oppose Strahd, which is also why he wasn't immediately aware the players were in his domain as he hadn't invited them! Part of that deceit was to give them a false card reading, as Madam Eva is dead in this story (or at least gone lol).
How Long does it take to Play this Adventure ?
My sessions were usually 3 hours long, and we played about 12-15 sessions.
Amazing tips, im playing DayZ on an RP server and this is gonna help me improve my RP tremendously
Thank you and good luck with your RP :)
I have never liked the requirement that it has to be a spell on your spell list. Or that you need to even be able to cast spells to use it. I have always thought it is more fun for magic classes to be able to make these and hand them off to the martial classes. I feel like it is just more fun.
Have you done away with those limitations in your games?
In the books, being a battlerager was also connected to this nasty alcohol they drank. The guttbuster brew. Partly why only Dwarves were Battleragers, the drink would most likely kill someone that wasn’t a Dwarf. So maybe besides smiths tools or mending, they should get brewer’s tools as well and have learned to make the guttbuster brew. You can figure out a mechanical benefit in game. It is a Dwarven brew so the benefits to a Dwarf could be doubled. Just felt like it was something left out
I hadn't heard that before! Thank you for adding to the context and lore of this subclass. I'll totally consider the guttbuster brew when I take another pass at this.
Why not instead of not provoking opportunity attacks on the charge, any attacks that hit you, the attacker takes piecing damage by contacting you. So it punishes them more for attacking you. You want them wasting their attacks on you, your the tank. But it’s at a greater cost
I like that idea
5:16 haha Keen eyes and shows a hedgehog
🤣
Sorry, I only came here for the life cleric... Aside from the Sheppard bit this section was not aimed at cleric at all :( but thanks for the wonderful video
Sure thing!
Where is that Yeti hair page in Xanathar's? I can't find it.
The Yeti hair is a personal suggestion based on the principles for crafting magic item formulas in Xanathar's.
twilight cleric counters that charm so hard ^^ hopefully none of my future players forthat campaign take that subclass
Yeah, Twilight's Channel Divinity is broken, and I don't mean that hyperbolically.
I would love to hear more about your wife Opal's builds. For example, the fighter/rogue combos you mentioned early in the videos ☺️ is there already a video on that?
She hasn't made videos on those, but she wrote articles about her Fighter/Rogue characters: www.flutesloot.com/why-i-love-multiclassing-fighter-and-rogue/ www.flutesloot.com/the-ultimate-5e-rogue-fighter-multiclass-guide/
If you homebrew darkness on Strahd, kind of puts a damper on Sunlight Artifacts.
Yes, but I prefer that the rewards the players are supposed to find as the main quests leading up to fighting Strahd to be helpful in fighting Strahd, not negated. The DM can homebrew anything, like no sunlight effects at all in the campaign.
K78 is a fucking TPK and no one talks about it.
I am prepping for my very first CoS campaign to run for my group, and came across the fact that Strahd's curse is perpetual apparently and I didn't really like that idea. While I still intend to use this idea, I wanted to come up with a way for a more satisfying resolution. And then I realized that Strahd's powers pretty much was a deal that he made with the Dark Powers that are sealed within the Amber Temple. SPOILERS BELOW, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK: I also realized that the wizards that were supposed to guard it fought each other not only because some of them were corrupted, but because of differences of dealing with the Dark Powers permanently. One group wanted to actually banish the Dark Powers in a separate realm to be imprisoned there for all eternity, but another faction wanted them to be just in the Amber Temple for the knowledge they might be willing to share. This created a violent schism between the wizards that killed them off. So I am now cooking up a homebrew penultimate quest for the players to go back to the Amber Temple once they realize that Strahd may be resurrected again. Maybe I will set up an ultimate battle that involves sealing the Dark Powers for good to cleanse fully Barovia of the curse. There might be something that is written, or even a surviving wizard that knows the secret of the "Grand Banishment" spell they created but was not able to use. This may require having Strahd completely give up his whole existence to break the deal, since his deal involves bringing as much darkness as he can gather for the Dark Powers to consume. This will help weaken the Dark Powers enough for the Grand Banishment Spell to work. The lich, Exethanter almost was able to discover this secret, but was never able to. There's probably this single door, or s single box he cannot open, because it needed a missing piece, a soul ever hungry, which might be Strahd himself, which could motivate the players to seek Strahd again. I may even have Strahd help the players as a sort of redemption arc for him. Even if it means losing his whole existence and the people's memory of him, especially the Barovians he served prior to his turning to darkness. Maybe now that he will be potentially finally fully put to rest because despite everything he did, he's just a tired old man which is something he denied for so long. With his withered, powerless state, he will assure the players that he no longer a threat, and hoped that since the players are strong enough to defeat somebody like him, they MAY have a chance to take on the Dark Powers. This could be a grand battle with the players, the surviving Barovians, the redeemed Vistani, the allies you come across CoS, and what little of forces Strahd can muster to weaken the Dark Powers enough for the Grand Banishment Spell to work.
Sounds fun and ambitious! The Amber Temple is a fun homebrew to become the finale.
Recently started playing as a lycanthrope character, specifically a Wereraven. Twist is that her humanoid form is chaotic evil and raided a Kindness of Wereravens for their loot before she got pecked and "cursed", with the Wereraven instead of increasing her bloodlust increasing her capacity to be a good person since it's the tiny speck of good in her that's getting bigger and bigger (and she's now broke because when transformed she keeps giving away all her treasure) and in Werebeast form is a Redemption Paladin of Selune (in humanoid form she's a Wildfire Druid but instead of trying to harmonize with nature she's more abusing her power over nature as a flex like "yeah I can bend the elements to my will because I'm better than you" in a very "survival of the fittest" mindset, so she ironically acts a lot like an evil-aligned lycanthrope as a normal person). In the meantime also Selune is ragdolling her in humanoid form every time she tries to do something cruel which makes for some really fun slapstick. She is going to get taught a lesson for being a trash person by golly! (yes, this was inspired by the Lawful Good Rampage post)
Don't be afraid to slowly transform your players. Make them FEEL the cursed transformations they are being subjected to.
Your cos ideas are amazing. Can i hire you for personal consulting of my campaign? I have the craziest party just starting the module and i really really need to ramp things up. I love the night hag hook to cause tension there. Difficult decisions that are compelling are the best. The werewolf den politics are great for that too. Makes it very murky waters for decision making. I have also had to change the werewolves attacking them on the road to VoB to be magic users in hybrid form because one of the players is unhittable with his AC! So heat metal and up casting magic missile will be the trick. I am trying to scare them into going to TserPool camp to have their weapons silvered.
Hey, thank you for the praise! I'd be happy to work with you on your campaign. If you fill out the "I Cast Message on Flutes" form at the bottom of my website, just above the footer, that'll send me an email. I can respond and start a dialogue with you. Cheers!
I think there was some confusion of casting time vs maintaining that confused people. To clarify: You may concentrate on only 1 spell at a time. This means: You may cast a spell with a long casting time OR maintain a spell you have already cast. You cannot do both in the same round since they both require concentration to do. The spell will tell you if it is one or both, i.e. it requires concentration to cast, maintain or both. The other difference is casting requires an action for each round of the casting time while maintaining does not. This is why most ritual spells are done outside combat.
One of my favorites & frankly, newer warlock characters that I've made in recent memory, is that of a fiend patron warlock. Since "spooky season" just passed, I choose to model him after the character from Irish Folklore: Stingy Jack or as he's otherwise known as: Jack-O'-Lantern. Yes, he's still a man that tricked the devil twice, sly/cunning & a mean drunk, but in my backstory, he's at the very least trying to be good. At best a line from the '07 Ghost Rider Movie can summarize him. "God knows I've made my share of mistakes, and I've been trying to make them right ever since. Guess all I've to do now is hope He sees fit to give me another chance." - Carter Slade
The Seelie court is generally treated as the less violent and more subtle court. They're more Summer-aligned and glamourous. They're still dangerous as Hell, just in a beautiful way.
Mechanically speaking, suppose you build a Runechild Sorcerer with the “Rune Carver” background and the “Rune Shaper” feat from “Bigby presents Glory of the Giants”.
Runes for days!
You look like you smell nice.
I have a modest cologne collection and a mild natural musk 🤣
IMO Strahd played correctly in a fight inside Castle Ravenloft is almost unkillable.
I suspect the same
new subscriber, would love for you to do a build for Demyx from kingdom hearts, a water/bard <3
Aw man I wish I had played any of those games! He looks like a cool character and I like any hydromancer.
I love this module and have DMed it twice (though the first didnt get to the end). I have to admit i had a terrible time in the final battle, so this video really helps remind me for my next time. I did have one extremely good battle with Strahd and my players where one player was knocked out and the Tank was charmed. Strahd vanished with both of them back to the castle and ended up turning the charmed one into a vampire spawn 😈
Yeahhh! That's fun stuff. I'm glad the video was fun for you :)
