I always hate it when a fanbase doesn't understand the word, "spinoff".
The fanbase understand the word spinoff. But don't throw a spinoff of a franchise when people are starving for a main series game for years. They should've read the room.

And I always hate when a company responsible for a beloved IP puts all their eggs in a broken basket, spend 5 years neglecting the fans because they just can't comprehend why the eggs fell down and splattered on the ground, spend this whole time talking about how that was their best basket ever and would love to continue using that basket going forward, and when they get their chance at redemption they come up with an ugly sweater and start begging you to like it!
Fans DO UNDERSTAND the word "spin-off".
The problem is that Federation Force came at a time Metroid seemed to be joining F-Zero in the graveyard for beloved Nintendo IPs they themselves have killed for being out of touch with the fans, and instead of coming out with a main line entry that corrects the mistakes of Other M, they came out with a spin-off that, at the time, seemed to have put the final nail on the coffin - Metroid is dead and from now on Nintendo will do whatever the hell it wants with the franchise completely disregarding the fans!
Thankfully that was not the case and we ended up getting the announcement to Metroid Prime 4, Samus Returns and Metroid Dread!
However, we only got those precisely because of fan backlash against Federation Force!
@@TwilightWolf032 I enjoy both F-Zero and Metroid but I know that these games aren't sellers. The Neglect happens because no one is buying....well not like Mario, Pokemon, Zelda etc.

I feel the same way about Hey Pikmin. Played it for the first time this year and had a blast the whole way, seeing the creative ways its developers adapted Pikmin to the 3DS
Federation Force, Hey! Pikmin, Dillon Dead-Heat Breakers, Code Name S.T.E.A.M and to a degree even Tri Force Heroes were all done dirty by poor reveals and random uninformed internet chatter. They're all bangers. Such a shame about their dismissal.

Yeah, couldn’t get into handheld gaming but I did like Pikmin 4. I wouldn’t mind a 2D version of the game.
If they put this on the Switch I'd love to grab three other people and blast through it.
I want to give this game an honest shot at some point. Victim of bad timing, but even as a Metroid superfan the hate towards it seems overblown.
Video is right on, just wished it didn't spend over half the runtime being defensive about the bad reveal context and got more into what's really cool about it like a deeper look into certain missions (one of the later missions where you iirc have an optional[?] goal to steal an egg was so sick).

A Top 5 3DS game imo in the company of the likes of mk7, Sushi Strikers, KHDDD, and Kid Icarus Uprising for me.
As a Lost Planet 2 fan, I was pretty interested in this title. Unfortunately, it was on the 3DS which didn't have the good ergonomics for a shooter and the low resolution was a turn off. If this was on the Wii U or Switch and maybe not in the garish chibi style, I'd probably give it a shot.
They should remaster this game and have it as the free launch title for the new console. Or have a Federation Force 99 or some shit.
I've always maintained that FedForce's quality didn't really matter, it really wasn't about that. The context was that - after Other M almost shotgunned Metroid and Samus' character into an early grave in 2010, and after a 6-year long series coma, and after Nintendo themselves killed AM2R in its crib on Metroid's 30th birthday.... the Fans were NOT having any sort of side story nonsense dropped on them, at all. Even from industry veterans like Next Level Games, the atmosphere was so poisoned and the fans so desperate for anything traditional Metroid, that FedForce had absolutely no chance in being successful. Quality didn't matter and still doesn't really matter. Other M rightfully has a spot in the bad game pit, and FedForce - unfortunately for it - is tied to that negative era of Metroid history and tainted by its Legacy.
I've always maintained that it's proof Metroid fans can't read or listen to anything since Tanebe outright said Federation Force was set dressing for Prime 4 back in 2015.
I was so furious when I saw the reveal trailer for this. Metroid Prime trilogy is my favorite games ever made, and then after years of waiting they showed this. I was ready to riot, seriously.
I've grown up a bit since then and now I "try" to patiently wait for the next entry. Prime remastered helps a ton too
It's pretty much Star Wars republic commando set in the Metroid universe.
How is that not awesome?
Because Metroid is the story of Samus Aran, the now titular Metroid (in Chozo language, that means "Ultimate Warrior", and the Metroids were created to protect the universe against the threat of the X Parasites, at the same time that they adopted Samus and genetically modified her with Chozo DNA, making her and the Metroids essentially siblings, especially after Fusion when she was infused with Metroid DNA and became a Metroid herself).
It's a tragic story about Samus losing her parents and homeland to the Space Pirates, then losing her adoptive father (Grey Voice) and her adoptive homeland of Zebes to the same threat again! And after she manages to defeat the Space Pirates in Zebes and chasing them all over the galaxy (Tallon IV, Aether and the Pirate Homeworld), she has to go back to Zebes and destroy the planet to put an end to their existence, destroying any hopes of retrieving her adoptive home world.
She lost her best human friend in the process, watched her bounty hunter friends succumb to Phazon and die without being able to do anything to save them, committed genocide against her "siblings", unknowingly unleashed the X Parasites from their dormant state in SR-388, got infected by them in a simple escort mission and almost died in the process, was stripped of most of her powers and made to uncover a conspiracy by the Galactic Federation that she had trusted so far while being hunted down by dozens of fully powered clones of herself, and later on would find the threat of the X Parasites hadn't ended and sent on a mission to kill a Chozo warrior that had betrayed their race and is looking to extract the Chozo DNA from her and make an army of her clones!
THAT DOES NOT LEND ITSELF TO A CUTESY SPIN-OFF WHERE YOU PLAY AS THE RED SHIRTS AND HAS TO DEFEAT SAMUS ARAN IN A SOCCER MATCH!
Your analogy is wrong because Metroid is not Star Wars! Copying Republic Commando with a Metroid paint coat does not make it awesome, it detracts from the story!
@TwilightWolf032 Okay, well it doesn't change the fact that it gets bland when you play as the same person, and one of the key organizations in the story doesn't even get their story told.
I was actually pretty interested in the game when it was announced, as was my boyfriend at the time who is a massive Metroid fan, I couldn't understand all the hate it was receiving, especially when God of War was announced at that same E3 and people were going wild despite it also deviating from tradition. The petition to get it cancelled really upset me as all it would do was rip it away from those of us who actually wanted to play it, all the people who were angry had to do was just not play it, nobody was obligated to play it.
Videos like this are why NWR are one of the best and have been for a long time.
Glad to see not everyone hates it. Federation force tried something new and was a fun experience even solo. Everyone has their own opinions about it and sure, it can absolutely be considered a bad game but that doesn't mean that EVERYONE hates it.

@@trashaimgamer7822I'm sure he's referring to the people hating on the actual game itself without actually knowing anything about how it plays. No reason to hate on this so much after the franchise is in a healthy state now.
I think this is one of those concepts that Nintendo should give another go. Maybe not a standalone game but perhaps the multiplayer mode for MP4. Just ditch the chibi style and allow robust customization of your character. If it’s part of MP4 I don’t think it would need its own “campaign”. They could just let you do procedurally generated missions of various size and difficulty. Maybe structured similar to that of Deeprock Galactic.
Im not a superfan of Metroid and I didnt even hate Other M as much as the rest of the world so the announcement didnt really disappoint me because I didnt really had any expectations or was holding my breath for a new announcment. So I went in pretty neutral.
But the game just looks so unappealing. The artstyls is okayish at best and in videos it just looks so extremely slow.
And blastball was absolutely horrible. Saw no reason to play it.
If the rerelease it for switch for 5 bucks I would take a look at it but if its actually a good game with good gameplay they should make a remake with good graphics.

I've owned and played this game many times and my conclusion is that it is not good. The only way this game is fun and playable is if you use the circle pad pro. Even the new 3ds with the nub is still rough.
Creating a multiplayer-centric game for a single-player franchise and then not balancing the campaign around a single person playing it just kills this game for me. Prime Hunters should have given Nintendo ample opportunity that there's no market for multiplayer Metroid games. They failed to learn and paid the price.
The actual game, was alright, was certainly better in co-op, and even back then no one played it. But I think 5 years after Other M and no news of anything else, this was not what we deserved. I'm convinced Samus Returns a year later was an immediate response to the hate this game got.
Samus returns started development in 2015, which means it was being made alongside Federation Force. FF just had the misfortune of coming out first.
The two titles don't even share producers. I think this was restarted for the 3DS (it's based off a cancelled DS game) in anticipation of Nintendo planning Metroid Prime 4 on the Switch. I guess Nintendo greenlit Tanabe to make a Metroid Prime 4 in like 2014 and while he was looking for a team for that game, he decided to get Federation Force as an interim game.
I don't care how good it is. I simply can not get over the chibi art style. It's just not Metroid. Until they remake it with a normal Metroid art style I won't ever be trying it out.

I played it a couple years ago solo, which is admittedly not the ideal way to play it, and I thought it was fine. I used the circle pad pro, so it controlled fairly well, and I had some decent fun with it.
But there’s no escaping the legacy of the Metroid series when looking at this game. It just doesn’t hold up to pretty much any of them, and I can’t see myself ever going back to it. It was doomed from the start by trying to make it a Metroid game
I can accept that this wasn’t a bad game, that it was even good, but I never wanted to play it. I wonder if anyone at Nintendo had any idea it would come across as such a slap in the face. Seems like such wasted effort. They’d have been better off holding it until Samus Returns was ready to go.

Federation Froce is my all time favorite 3DS game., at the peak the multiplayer was just awesome, so many life-long gaming memories, like the mission where you have to push the cart - everyone was so great, helpful, even without the voice chat. To be honest, it is still my most favorite Metroid game ever. The gameplay, the controls, the music, everything is awesome. I am still a bit bitter about how the game was blasted before it even came out... but now I just feel pitty about those who actually never gave it a chance to play it. Well, since the e-shop is dead now, I`ll just keep my 3DS with the virtual copy and mint in sealed box physical copy safe to - maybe one day - show it to my kids or whatever :) Amazing game.

What are you talking about? This game sucks lol. Not cause it's a chibi spin-off title, it's because it's a multiplayer experience first and since nobody bought this game solo play is boring as hell and even with mp it's still nothing special.

It's really not. It's not cancer in videogame form likenits reputation has become. But divorced of the metroid branding it would have been nothing beyond mediocre.
The shooty soccer mini game is better at its genre than the main game is.
