In the sunshine state..... I think those were alligators though. We don't typically have crocs. But, I enjoy her commentary. So sensible just delightful.
Please give all wildlife space. It makes me angry when people try to get as close as possible to take a picture. Then act surprised and shocked the animal attacks.
When Ann talked about the decentralized nervous systems of the octopus it reminded me of a joke I tell to teach people about chickens. Chickens literally have brains in their asses. They have a cluster of nerves at the base of their tail that acts like a small brain. That's why a chicken will continue to run around for a while after you chop off it's head.
The sea lion pulling the girl off the dock was in Richmond BC Canada. It was on the news. As I recall, the feeding the animal part wasn't included in the newscast. People don't get that animals like sea lions and sharks aren't limited to the sea. They can jump and lunge too. I came across a sea elephaht sleeping at the edge of a beach. Quite far from the water. I urged the German tourist not to approach it too closely. She went within 5 feet. Thankfully it just kept snoring. If the nap/sleep had ended with her inside its threat range... I can't imagine her surviving. Hornby Island, summer time.
Except that in the United States, we primarily, particularly In Florida, have problems with alligators more than crocodiles. Particularly when little kids are playing in a heard alone near water. 😮😢
That poor blue ringed octopus. To me it shows how ignorant and cruel humans can be. Unhook the poor little thing and stop laughing at its torture....gross behavior.
He or one of her parents was also the one who told her to sit on the edge. You can see her crying in the full video and scared when it pops its head out of the water while someone is also tossing it food. Then one of them tells her to sit there in the edge. She's very hesitant and only does it because she's told to...crying the whole time
I blame water parks for the sea lion bit, they make sea lions popping their heads off water seem so cute, basically desensitize people on how potentially dangerous that is. They are called sea LIONS for a reason.
... they're called sea lions for very aesthetic reasons, and nothing to do with temperament they have loud roars and male sea lions have manes, the stellar, or northern european sealion males actually grow full manes of fur around their necks and bellies people should just know that sea lions, seals and walruses are all kinda assholes anyway and will maim and kill you for not offering enough fish to their lord and savior... themselves
I wouldn’t say that, most people know that, but the people are getting stupider every year since social media is a thing and I would give this the fault and not the water parks. I remembered when I was a kid, they always told us at the water parks about the dangers of these animals. People today just think everything is harmless, because if it’s not it would get banned, or canceled… That’s how people think in the world of social media and also by seeing these animals on social media where they never talk about the dangers, is the real issue how the get labeled as harmless
The sea lion that pulled the girl into the walk happened where I live and that whole area there is massive signs saying “don’t feed the sea lions”. So stupid to let your kid sit there like that!
I was thinking the very same thing. Ppl do very stupid things just a few years back when the parents was walking thru a Disney resort park(I think)near the water and there was signs warning ppl not to let small children or pets run around there. A family was doing just that and their 3 yr old son was snatched up by a croc who came running up on the sand? The dad went into the water after the croc but came back. I believe they found the little boy's body awhile later. It's hard to feel sorry for parents when they do dumb things like that? I do of course feel heartbroken for the child.
I’m from Wyoming. I’ve been to Yellowstone countless times. When you entry the park you pass signs in every language telling to stay a certain distance from bison, moose and bears. They hand you a warning that tells you. The ranger at the gate tells you. There are signs all throughout, in many languages. Still people get gored or tore up, every year.
My thought was this: don’t tease animals with food. Frankly, if you tease ME with food, I’ll probably bite you eventually- by accident, of course😏! The sea lion didn’t look particularly aggressive to me- he don’t even stick around after yanking her in- he could have grabbed her and taken off. It was more like an “FU I’m out”, kind of thing.
Our local aquarium several years ago noticed one of the school of fish was getting smaller and smaller. Turns out the octopus had memorized the guard schedules, figured out how to unlock his own tank, crawl across the aquarium to this other tank, unlock it, crawl inside, eat several fish and go back to his tank without so much as a hinge left open 😂 It took WEEKS to figure it out and I think it was because someone finally decided to check the cameras.
I once saw a fisherman slap a sea lion as hard as he could to try prevent it stealing a fish from him - the sea lion didn't even seem to notice. It got the fish.
The fisherman should feel thankful that the sea lion didn't get him as well. Pass him a message from me: 'stop being such a miser, you *** (- use the word of your choice here)' 😂
Same. People laugh when I tell them I refuse to swim in the ocean but I grew up watching Shark Week and I don’t want to be featured on it. It’s their home, not mine.
It amazes me how cruelly some people treat an octopus. As said below they are intelligent. There is even a video of one that brought a gift to a woman that had saved it the day before. It "waved" and put a stone on her shoe and then left and walked back to the sea.
It's absolutely sickening how many sharks are killed each year. The people that continue to kill sharks for their fins and to use for medicinal purposes have to stop. These people know that their actions are hurting the shark population and they don't care. It blows my mind how selfish these people are.
China is one of the worst countries in the world if not THE worst country for decimating sharks and many many other species around the world. Its that "traditional medicine" bullcrap. And it’s downright evil… they shark can’t do anything but descend and DROWNED… incredibly cruel. Even though I’m extremely terrified of them I wouldn’t wish that fate on anything or anyone.
If you eat fish you are part of the problem. Most sharks die as unintended by-catch drowned in massive commercial nets and thrown overboard. Watch Seaspiracy... and weep.
Firstly Dr Anne is hysterical and educational I need her to be my professor 🤣 secondly as soon as I knew the little girl was OK my attention immediately went to the sunglasses slowly sinking away 😩🤣
I love how casual she is about the shark biting the side of the shark cage. When I found this video I expected it would be focused on how deadly the animal is but it was actually very pleasant.
My brush with an octopus: it was dark red angry after a lot of divers had photographed it, then changed to sand colour and carried on minding its business. Quite impressive to see that in real life. It sodded off into a crevice and my dive-buddy thought it was a good idea to try to get it out of the cave by poking around with his snorkel. Five of six tentacles came shooting out and took the snorkel away. We could see the octopus sitting in the cave, examining its new booty, the sort of snorkel with a transparent mouthpiece, so you could see the tentacles fingering around in it. Eventually it got bored and threw it out again. The dangerous bit was me running out of air later in the dive because I had laughed so hard.
I love her. Also something to think about with sharks: they don't have hands; the bump and bite is a test to see what you are and not a true 'attack'. Sharks can do a lot more damage than their test nibbles usually do.
Yep, this is the third in a row I've watched with this Dr. I'm subbing for sure.. She's fun and I want to learn from her because of the way she teaches.. These are the types of teachers that should be in class, I'd never want to leave!!
Love this lady She just speaks the truth and no sugar coat I love it when people that do not respect animals, get what they deserve When I see people eating a live, beautiful, thinking, feeling and alive octopus it's very satisfying to see her in pain and scared to death now she knows how it feels
@SubversiveMemes because an octopus is super intelligent and in nature most of the time the animal is killed and then eaten i wish it was a blue ring octopus now that would be what she deserved
@SubversiveMemes Animals also rape other animals, does that mean it's okay for us to rape people? Yeah, I didn't think so. We are intelligent beings, and we should use that intelligence to bring good in the world, and not unnecessarily harm other living beings. Maybe think through your argument a bit more before calling others irrational...
@SubversiveMemes So you hunt and kill animals yourself? If we evolved to do so, then you should be doing that tp stay alive, but I'm guessing you buy your meat from a supermarket. Back then it was necessary for us to eat meat to survive, just as it is necessary for animals to rape other animals in order for their species to survive. But as we evolved, we discovered agriculture, and many other food sources that are often far healthier than meat. Your point is that it's okay for geese to rape because it's necessary for their survival. But this cannot be applied to human meat eating, at least not anymore. It is unnecessary for us to kill and eat animals at all, and at least at the magnitudes that we do. Therefore, as it is unnecessary, it is morally wrong. This is using your own argument.
@SubversiveMemes Actually you are the one who claimed that necessity dictates morality, with your geese analogy. Also, to say that morality only extends to our own species is an incredibly human exceptionalist (also arrogant) thing to say. What about pets? What about the environment? People already extend morality to animals, talking about humane treatment, animal abuse, and free range etc. The question is why we cherry pick what we accept as moral behaviour. Why should we as (intelligent and therefore morally responsible) human beings cause unnecessary harm to the environment whilst causing unnecessary suffering to other living things. I would say we have a responsibility as intelligent living beings, to extend compassion to other living beings. Otherwise it's just speciesist, and we can extend that logic to extremes. For example, why should I care about whether you live or die? I don't know you, you're not in my clan? Using your logic, I shouldn't care. Also racism can be easily defended using your logic.
That's karma for you, people who don't give a sh*t about the suffering of animals, particularly by trying to eat a LIVING animal deserve to know what it feels like to be eaten themselves.
@SubversiveMemes first, just because an octopus' intelligence developed in a much different way then our own dosen"t make it any less valed. second you should not compare human behavior to a compleatly different food chain. also humans find it immoral to eat highly intelligent vertbret why not an invertbret.
Leopard seals are some of the greatest carnivorous predators and perhaps the scariest looking seal in the world. In my opinion of course. Love your stuff!!
@@djquinn11 I know that is the right thing to do and I hope that I would do it. I just want to acknowledge that it is so often men who do these incredibly brave things. Women are brave in many ways e.g. giving birth, but I just want to acknowledge the frequent courage of men.
I've just discovered Dr. Ann Jones and fell in love with how she explains and presents the animal world. Attenborough you've got competition!! hahahahaha ... Loved the video and it reinforced my believe that we as a species are extremely stupid (most of the time): the blue ringed octopus baiting was just plain stupid and idiotic!! People please don't do that!!! Anyways I enjoyed Dr. Jones explanations and will binge watch all of ABC Sciences videos. Cheers!
I feel sea lions are more like a very large fox but forever in their younger years when they're super curious and really daring. You should think similarly about being within biting distance of one
Dr. Ann makes this content so fascinating, interesting, and very enjoyable. I’m not a big animal person but I like learning about wildlife every now and then. It’s amazing what this life can offer, ya know?
Watching this kinda feels like watching steve Irwin back in the day. Like watching an Australian who is genuinely very passionate about wildlife is such a positive vibe Thank you❤
I find it vile that the practice of catching sharks only to lop off their fins and toss them back into the ocean alive & finless for a delicacy soup is still allowed to go on. I’m aware that it would be nearly impossible to regulate or monitor something like this given the vastness of the ocean.
And why does this beautiful SMART lady not have her own show on Animal Planet or Nat Geo??? I love this, and so do my niece and nephew. They are always quoting facts from her. Thanks! Awesome series!!!
here from canada! I remember that day that it pulled the girl in the water. was all over social media. MY fiancé and I walks down there a lot. unfortunately they have a boats selling fish ect. there and people like to also try and feed animals in the water.
Leave it to stupid people to do dumb stuff and then blame the animals. Human beings are the most dangerous animals in the world. And the only one that kills just for the sake of killing on a regular basis.
octopuses are definitely among the coolest, smartest and most amazing animals there are.🐙 Also scary at times, but usually humans asked for it when they attack.
I'm a damn coward especially anything that is related to oceans and the likes but I wanted to hear her talk about it so I'm mostly closing my eyes. 😅😭😂
29:45 the biggest problem with the decline of sharks and whales is the humboldt squid. initially only known to live in the Sea of Cortez, now they can be found all the way up to Alaska. in the Sea of Cortez they are referred to as the Devil squid partly because they have been seen dragging fisherman who had fallen overboard to their deaths, by dragging the, down. Unlike sharks who do not see us as prey, the Humboldt squid will actively target anyone in the water. Also where as normal squid can only hunt to 500m, Humboldt squid can hunt down to 1500m and are cannibalistic, so once they get to dangerous numbers they will never run out of food and swimming at night will be fatal!
I have horribly afraid of hippos, even though I've never been near one. Except for one baby pygmy hippo at the Chicago Shedd Aquarium. She was adorable yet still weighed more than me. Also I highly recommend ZFrank's Hippos walking backwards video. It's surprisingly entertaining.
I think vloggers eating life seafood are usually abusing them first I have seen one pour salt on live eels . Horrific what is the point of this besides cruel ? Thanks again for a great video! You are loved! More Ann!
Don't project. We know your xenophobia is screaming at you because we live in a coddled society but take some time and understand that this has been a cultural tradition for generations.
@@yellowbelly7863 Just because something is a tradition doesn’t make it right. It’s a tradition to eat shark fin soup-you know how they get the shark fins? Huge ships catch thousands of sharks, they cut off the fins, then throw the still live sharks BACK in the ocean because all they want are the fins. And rhinos are nearing extinction because poachers catch them, cut off their horns then leave the entire rest of body to rot, all because some cultures think the horns have medicinal or aphrodisiac properties. Now, are those traditions that should be continued?
So if an octopus decides to move across the seabed, does it experience that movement in the first person as we would, or does it experience it more like an expert carriage driver ? I mean, does it go there, or does it issue commands and get carried there ?
Every time Im in the Ocean I respect that Im in Their territory, not Mine... we can also swim in swimming pools, They can't. God, those Hippos are beautiful! Had no idea they're related to whales.
Its all fun and games and "lets take a selfie with the wild animal" until the animal in question acts like a wild animal. Ahh. So with crocs, it goes in one ear and out the other? I know what to call my partner now 👍
Am I a terrible person? I really enjoyed the octopus attack on the stupid, ignorant, barbaric girl who tried to eat it. It was awesome. I watched it many times.
A friend of mine was working on a gillnetter up in Alaska while reeling uo the net a sea lion bit a chunk of his upper thigh. I mean a big chunk of meat out of his leg. He lived was lucky that he was helicoptered out in time before he bled out. Gnarly looking scar.
In drought times in Africa hippos range far from water to eat the native peoples gardens and even their huts if made from branches and thatch coverings. But normally they eat river vegetation which they may defend.

Some rattlesnake is watching the clip with the Chinese woman & the octopus and thinking, "See woman, that's why I have VENOM!"
Imagine just driving along in your car and being attacked by a hippo?!
I’ll pass, thanks. Insomnia already bad enough😳
Honestly, when watching that footage, in my mind I was using the break way, way earlier than the person in the video.
Hippos are psychopaths😅
Love this lady
She just speaks the truth and no sugar coat
I love it when people that do not respect animals, get what they deserve
When I see people eating a live, beautiful, thinking, feeling and alive octopus it's very satisfying to see her in pain and scared to death now she knows how it feels
It's called Karma, and i don't have any sympathy for that vlogger either. Eating live animals is cruel and abhorrent, to say the least.
Haha that'll teach her trying to eat a live octopus, serves her right
That's karma for you, people who don't give a sh*t about the suffering of animals, particularly by trying to eat a LIVING animal deserve to know what it feels like to be eaten themselves.
Right!?! Octopus was all "How do _you_ like it?!"
@SubversiveMemes different when the living animal youre eating is verifiably as smart as you are....
Ill be damned if i eat something alive especially if it has a brain lol
@SubversiveMemes first, just because an octopus' intelligence developed in a much different way then our own dosen"t make it any less valed. second you should not compare human behavior to a compleatly different food chain. also humans find it immoral to eat highly intelligent vertbret why not an invertbret.
The octopus footage was so upsetting, people can be so sadistic 😠
Leopard seals are some of the greatest carnivorous predators and perhaps the scariest looking seal in the world. In my opinion of course. Love your stuff!!
That man just jumped straight into the water to help that girl who got taken by a seal. That's so VERY brave.
Wouldn’t you? She’s a little girl.
@@djquinn11 I know that is the right thing to do and I hope that I would do it. I just want to acknowledge that it is so often men who do these incredibly brave things. Women are brave in many ways e.g. giving birth, but I just want to acknowledge the frequent courage of men.
That was her grandfather
His grand daughter
sea lion, not a seal
Like watching an Australian who is genuinely very passionate about wildlife is such a positive vibe Thank you❤
Yes, very apt of you 😊
Totally on the side of the animals here. It is all self defense. Love your work Ann !!
24:48 So polite Ann. paraphrase: Get the F outta there.
The octopus doesn’t attack, he defends.
Hello from Australia! Thanks for sharing KittyKatCorn.
Love watching these videos. Dr Ann is such a fun host. Thank you. Also must remember not to eat a live octopus
Awesome! Love the new 30 minute format.
More for us! :D
I love watching Anne's videos. A fan from Cornwall England
Hello from Australia Terry!
Ya gotta love the Aussie accent! Hello from Brazil! :D
That's so nice of you to say. Most other English speakers don't like our accent :)
Do a video on the box jellyfish and the other small one, the name eludes me, that is really lethal as in no antivenin to counter the sting. Yikes!
Love Dr Ann - she’s so smart, funny and nerdy cool 😎
I can’t believe threatening the croc with a sandal worked
It’s amazing how fast the hippo was running in the water. Running!
YES, more of these!
Nailed another great video Dr Ann, your commentary is informative and just makes me chuckle!!😂 Gotta love ABC Science!🧡
Thanks so much!
ABC Science Thank YOU!!💗❤️
Those guys are lucky, blue ring octopis don't enjoy biting people. They will put up with alot before they finally resort to their venom.
Love how she reminds that these casualties and attacks are people’s fault and not the animal’s.
ZeFrank is the best 😂 he's hysterical!
Dr. Ann- I’ve just recently watched the Netflix documentary” MY OCTOPUS TEACHER”. It was absolutely brilliant
I think vloggers eating life seafood are usually abusing them first I have seen one pour salt on live eels . Horrific what is the point of this besides cruel ? Thanks again for a great video! You are loved! More Ann!
Cause it tastes good?
@@yellowbelly7863sorry but just bc something has been done in a culture for years or even centuries does NOT make it acceptable behavior.
Dr Ann, you're so much flippin fun! Keep doing what you do, 'cause I'm now a ride-or-die fan.
Wish that the UA-camr had a Venomous Octopus ‼️
Ann you are my Australian David A.
Never underestimate the chancla😂......sorry sorry I had to😂😂😂
Anyway hippos terrify me more than sharks tbh
Same!
How did I not know this channel existed?! Love ya work Dr Ann! ❤️ from WA
Welcome!!
Dr Ann Jones. You´re so great!
Great information och you are hilarious.
MORE OF YOU is what we all need
So if an octopus decides to move across the seabed, does it experience that movement in the first person as we would, or does it experience it more like an expert carriage driver ? I mean, does it go there, or does it issue commands and get carried there ?
The annual death toll from shark attacks vs hippo attacks is Wild!! 😮
I’m surprised we don’t see more Hippo horror movies! 😂
Why am I watching a Hippo crap while eating cereal.....
Every time Im in the Ocean I respect that Im in Their territory, not Mine... we can also swim in swimming pools, They can't.
God, those Hippos are beautiful! Had no idea they're related to whales.
That guy who jumped straight in for his daughter or whatever is a a legend
Its all fun and games and "lets take a selfie with the wild animal" until the animal in question acts like a wild animal.
Ahh. So with crocs, it goes in one ear and out the other? I know what to call my partner now 👍
I could listen to Dr. Ann Jones talk all day 🥰🥰🥰
I need her to have her own show she's amazing.
Am I a terrible person? I really enjoyed the octopus attack on the stupid, ignorant, barbaric girl who tried to eat it. It was awesome. I watched it many times.
Very good. I really enjoyed the video.
Octo-hickey 😂
Another reason to just stay out of the water.. it’s the hippo poo for me.
A friend of mine was working on a gillnetter up in Alaska while reeling uo the net a sea lion bit a chunk of his upper thigh. I mean a big chunk of meat out of his leg. He lived was lucky that he was helicoptered out in time before he bled out. Gnarly looking scar.
Thanks for these videos, I am working towards becoming a park ranger and these videos help me learn more and more about animals.
Best of luck!
@@ABCScience Thank you!
How Jelly Fish didn't make the cut is beyond me considering they are the most deadly sea creature in the ocean
I love the point about how many sharks and rays are killed by people each year and their importance to humanity.
“Pretty dam good in water”
No pun intended
In drought times in Africa hippos range far from water to eat the native peoples gardens and even their huts if made from branches and thatch coverings. But normally they eat river vegetation which they may defend.
