    Eddie Waring was not in his usual jovial self commentating on this one. He didn't say "early bath" when Sid Hynes got sent off.

    Actually Murphy says he remembers nothing about it until he came round in the dressing room. True or not he played the game and he was an awesome player. My parents were at this final, what a great win for the underdog.

      Murphy's high tackle provoked the trouble. He was a little shit in this game. Refereed appallingly.

    Is this your average game from back then? Punch a guy on the ground, both get up and play the ball (at 11.53). Seemed every tackle in this vid was a head shot!

    Look at Stu Ferguson back-heeling a kicking mound prior to the goalkicks !!!

    I was there at the game. It really was awful and I thought so at the time. It's funny to see 4 tackles and a scrum, and what scrums too! You could lose the ball in your opponents' 25, and still win it in back in a dangerous place. You don't see it here, but that's probably what happened for Dorrington's opening try.
    You can also see why they reduced the drop goal to one point the season after! But apart from the tedious number of drop goals, players' discipline was dreadful! Coaches would go crazy now at players taking a swing at an opponent under the ref's nose, often when they're in possession!

    Had a new pair of clogs made for this day.; Hursts of Hindley. LEIGH in Cherry and white on the uppers. But enough of my clogs. The lads were magnificent; the magic ingredient? ALEX! What a star.

      @M "Soccer"? Are you American? McDonald's probably sell more meals than any other company. Does that make theirs the best food? One thinks not. I could make the same point about the most popular music. Popularity does not really have anything to do with quality. More to do with mass appeal.

  • @JemMackie

    Murf would say that. I went the previous year and Keith Hepworth broke Colin Tyer's jaw, the year previous Dennis Hartley knocked out Bill Burgess but Syd Hynes didn't hit Murf hard enough to do any damage.

      Completely agree, I was there for the terrible Hepworth tackle. He should have been the first plater to be sent off at Wembley.

  • @JemMackie

    Alex Murphy was never knocked cold that day, it was a big con to get Syd Hynes off. In 1966 he played offside all day so Saints would get the ball from the scrum against Wigan. One of the finest cheats GB league ever had.

    • @davidhart7792
      @davidhart7792 2 роки тому +1

      He completely ruined the 1966 final. Gamesmanship to the ultimate. But like Billy Boston said in his book, the referee should have stopped it. In today's game, Wigan would had possession from every penalty, not a scrum with no recognised hooker.

    playthatgeeter; it was good that you gained revenge in 1989 for your 1966 drubbing plus the earlier defeat in 1961. It only took nearly quarter of a century to get over your inferiority complex. And Alex, was quite simply the greatest, not as good by the time he'd moved to Leigh admittedly, but the greatest nevertheless!

    sockington1 - Murphy is the most odious player in the history of British sport. Revolting little cheat. You can see him here asking for players to be sent off, faking injury. Men play this game - but Murphy is a little girl. Good player - but a little girl. I will NEVER forget the joy I had as we destroyed Saints at Wembley - the 27-0. Murphy Murphy what's the score? Murphy what's the score? And Saints fans love Murphy. Says it all really :)
