This song always meant to me being de-sensitized through too much sensation. Chasing pleasure for pleasure's sake soon becomes an addiction, like any drug. It takes more to get a sensation (finger, knuckle, elbow, shoulder) before you get the same feeling. The line that strikes me the most is the last one "There's something kind of sad about, the way this has come to be, desensitized to everything, what became of subtlety?" Given our current instant entertainment society, it just sounds more true now than ever.

Some say there is a much deeper meaning besides sexual abuse. Mental abuse of how we indoctrinate our children to believe as we do. Especially in the case of organized religion.
This is how I interpret this song: The analogy of him sodomizing someone with his fist is a metaphor as to how we always go to new extremes to gain more pleasure since we have become desensitized to standard things. We live in an age where we become desensitized due to copious amounts of instant gratification and we're forced to keep searching for something new and fresh to make us feel alive. The "borderline" is the anus (or metaphorically the boundary of the comfort zone), and his arm is getting deeper and deeper as the song progresses.
@@mr198221 Its creepy, but I wouldn't assume this if Maynard hadn't said this about about the song before one of its live performances: "Many people think that our songs have a deeper meaning... Here's a song about someone shoving their fist up someone's ass". Then the name "Stinkfist" made so much more sense to me...
In my opinion the meaning of the song is summed up in these lyrics: “there’s something kind of sad about the way that things have come to be. Desensitized to everything. What became of subtlety. Now how can this mean anything to me if I really don’t feel a thing at all?” We are inundated with so much negative information. Everyday the news tells you about people being killed or dying in accidents. If the cameras happen to be “lucky” enough to get footage they will play the carnage over and over and over again. We see and hear so much we’re becoming desensitized. We feel less and less and it requires more and more to shock us enough to feel anything for the suffering and pain of others. Loosing empathy is loosing what it means to be human so we crave more and more so we can feel that again. But the more we see the less we feel and the less human we are all becoming.
A lot of times the 'tragedies' we see on Tell-Lie-Vision are not even real. Sensationalized at best and downright Fake at worst. But whatever sells fear is the goal.
I think it’s pretty much a metaphor for the lengths people go to to feel something in a world of overstimulation where you become desensitized to things and become bored by hem, and the lengths you go to feel get deeper and deeper. It can be sexual. It can be drugs. It can be any vice.

This song isn't just a song to me it pretty much emcompasses my life from 13-15. It was mine as well as my best friends favorite song at the time, he died of heroin overdose some years back. Whenever I hear this I always remember some great times I had.
I've always taken this song to be talking about the consuming hunger we face today. There are a lot of things we fill ourselves with, be it buying new and shinier things (phones, cars, fashion, things to fill your home) or porn or even drugs and sex. Just like an addict we need more to feel the good feelings. We shove our hand deeper and deeper past that borderline of pleasure to feel it. Think about hoarders, doing crazy things to pack more into their spaces to just feel something. Porn can be like that too, over stimulation makes the mind seek out harder and harder imagery.
Someone has already posted the lyric: "How could it mean anything to me, if I really don't feel anything at all," but, i wanted to share that i use this as a cautionary tale for others. I've met too many women in my life that went to great sexual lengths for someone they either deeply loved or wanted to be with only to find themselves left humiliated, heart broken, and discarded. The questions are always the same, why doesn't he love me, how could he have left, how could I have been so stupid... ? I always make sure these people know that they are loved, they're wonderful people, and they need to understand a little more about how this happens ...and more importantly, how to recognize these behaviors moving forward. Maynard is so honest with his own self appraisals, as objective of human nature as a human can be, and unabashed in his commentaries... the interpretations of this song are fantastic and I'm thankful to read each of them here, but, there's a crowbar across the jaw truth here ... and I'm glad its brought all of us here. Thanks for uploading this. When I was a kid I used to wonder how everyone else felt about Beethoven or Mozart. This right here is the "land of milk and honey" promised to the children of God. This is really stunning music. Thanks for absorbing and reacting on film. You made a fan!
Years before I knew what the title of this song even referred to, this was an important song to me and my own journey. I was a really confused kid when it came to a sexual identity, and this song was huge helping me accept who and what I am. I know now the double entendre of the lyrics but it still moves me back to that scared confused kid, trying to find myself and my place in this world. Prison Sex was another song by Tool that I needed to hear that helped me. Do I just accept what the world says I am or should be, or do I figure it out on my own, make my own decision? Who am I? Who should I be? Does what I want or need even matter or am I just stuck with the hand dealt to me? I still struggle, to this day, with those questions, but this song helps me feel better about my decisions.
You are 100% correct. Sex is just a metaphor in this song. The song is about how we as a society continuously need more and more to satisfy us. There is no subtlety anymore.. the more vulgar the better
This song needed a massive release because of the way it builds up this claustrophobic vibe that just crawls up on you as the song goes on. And they end up delivering like no other song. Goosebumps every time, man.
Jamal_AKA_Jamal I love how you read rhythm. I'm nodding on the 1, while you nod on the "and". I have begun practicing that to inform my songwriting. Feels so damn backwards! God I'm white. Great channel, man. Love it.

One of my favs. Your interpretation is spot on imo. Especially now when everyone expects instant gratification and when one receives it, it’s not enough they need more. Still relevant today. ❤️ tool
Jam... I love how much time you’re spending on tool. They are my favorite band in the modern era of music. Pink Floyd is my all time fave, but tools lyrics and themes, their overall concept is so much more substantive than Pink Floyd (and Pink Floyd is a pretty deep band in their own right). I’m really enjoying watching your reactions and your take on the themes. Keep it going, keep your journey into tool full speed ahead and I recommend also taking a few looks at perfect circle (the tool singer’s other band)
I've been waiting a long time for you to do this track! Yes, it's metaphorical lyrics (Maynard's words are pretty much always up for interpretation) . Look at it from the standpoint of someone who is addicted to drugs...there, does that help? "I don't want it, I just need it...to breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive", or further, "I can help you change tired moments into pleasure, say the word and we'll be well upon our way...", or "blend and balance, pain and comfort deep within you until you will not want me any other way" - all of this sounds very much like the plight of a drug addict, all done metaphorically as an analogy to anal fisting - brilliant! Always LOVED this tune, always will! Tool forever!
Man, took my wife to see TOOL this last Saturday night in New Orleans. Man what a GREAT SHOW!! if you get a chance to see them it’s worth the money!! Bring you some binoculars so you can catch everything that is going on! Unless you can get close up!🤘
You have to see the video for this song, it’s phenomenal. It’s like a mini horror film. I suppose most Tool videos can be described in that way, but this one is my favorite. It’s actually scary, do yourself a favor and play it at night with all the lights off, it’s awesome.
I just want to say I love Jamel because he usually reminds me of the way I used to *innocently* interpret EVERYTHING whether it was Tool, or Jay-Z or Classical music or anything really. My mind isn't as innocent, but It's cool to see people with influence trying to keep all those random younger influential minds responsible in their thinking.
Hey Jamel. Cheers from Germany 🤘.My two favorite reactions from you are: 1.RATM - Renegades of funk 2.All your other reaction videos. It's time you got to know the band Clutch from Maryland. I recommend the Song "Regulator" ✌
Oh yeah prison planet, I’m from Maryland and grew up this these guys. The bassist daughter goes to my kids school now. I saw them with Primus like a year or 2 ago for free because he hooked me up with backstage passes. Got to love it
This may be my favorite song from a guitarists standpoint by Tool. I love the way Adam changes it up from verse/chorus to verse/chorus. Small, subtle changes keeping the song fresh. Such a good song.
This song is STEEPED in metaphor. From what I've been able to gather the lines from the 3rd verse pretty well sum up the intent behind the song. 'Something kinda sad about The way that things have come to be Desensitized to everything What became of subtlety? How can it mean anything to me If I really don't feel anything at all? I'll keep digging till I feel something' Essentially just speaking to how everything about our society, western culture, perhaps even globally, has been over-saturated and overstimulated to the point now where even the idea of having a super powerful micro computer in our pockets doesn't really seem to wow us...we get bored in no time and just buy a new one...always searching for that feeling of being alive and excited. Novelty is lost. This general theme then can be applied to many different contexts, including what you were talking about, going out and meeting new people, stepping outside of their comfort zones and all that. :0) Great reaction as always man!
I love your metal reactions man! Try "Born of Osiris -XIV & Behold" as you seem to appreciate instrumental understanding as well as talent as singer that's something you'd probably like to hear :) Cheers from Finland!
Watching your videos is almost like hearing the song for the first time again man, i get goosebumps, love your breakdown of the lyrics and how diverse your selection of reviews are on your channel. Keep doing what you do 🤙
This is the best description of the song I have seen and it fits with how I see the song. "Every chorus of this song differ having at first "Finger deep" then "Knuckle deep" and then "Elbow deep... Shoulder deep". It represents the idea of how people tend to receive more and more pleasure until the extreme point because over-stimulation numbs their senses."
This song always meant to me being de-sensitized through too much sensation. Chasing pleasure for pleasure's sake soon becomes an addiction, like any drug. It takes more to get a sensation (finger, knuckle, elbow, shoulder) before you get the same feeling. REACT TO PARABOL+PARABOLA pleaaaaseeee
Yes the entire package of them both. The music video is just a very intense experience as well.
@@Knightmare-gz9ls i've never liked their art or music videos. just the music for me.
this is a must!
Please react to *PARABOLA* and actually play the music video
@@tonyyul703 Yes! The official video, not the/any fan made. Please, please!
"I'm just trying to dig a little deeper into these lyrics..." hahahaha
Seeping into the brain is where MJK took this! What an amazing song and lyricist.
I don't know that there is any "correct" interpretation of this song, but I really like yours a lot.
You are 100% correct. Sex is just a metaphor in this song. The song is about how we as a society continuously need more and more to satisfy us. There is no subtlety anymore.. the more vulgar the better
Track 6 Swamp Song from the 1993 debut Undertow is probably my favorite old Tool song.
Love it.
Good stuff. It's cool to be rocking out again. The beauty of music is to think what you want to! Try Soundgarden Searching With My Good Eye Closed. Power chords and unique lyrics
New to Tool and this song is definitely my favorite.
When it comes to Tool it's always a metaphor. Even when it's literal it's also a metaphor for a bare minimum of one other thing. 😏
man i remember when this song was all over the radio. good times.
The best of times!! I wanna go back!!
Tool is the best hands down my favorite 😜 they really put meaning into their music . Makes you think what are they trying to tell us .🤍🖤
I got to hear this live in New Orleans Saturday night.😍
haagatha Same here flew from Seattle to see them in Nola
@@user-mz7fo3gz5h That's awesome, I only had to drive from Houston. Was worth it wasn't it?
haagatha Definitely! Was my first concert and I feel they like set the standards for any future concerts I might go to a little high lol
Great song. Double meaning at its best.
My favorite album of theirs by far. Every song is a banger.
Man, took my wife to see TOOL this last Saturday night in New Orleans. Man what a GREAT SHOW!! if you get a chance to see them it’s worth the money!! Bring you some binoculars so you can catch everything that is going on! Unless you can get close up!🤘
Your vibes are stellar man. Allways exited to see a new upload from you. ^^
Every time Jamel/Jamal said “deeper” I was like 😏, deeper...
Do your research...it is about his time in prison and beomg raped
This song is from top to bottom about addiction. Addiction can be in many forms and I believe this song covers all aspects of it.
You have to see the video for this song, it’s phenomenal. It’s like a mini horror film. I suppose most Tool videos can be described in that way, but this one is my favorite. It’s actually scary, do yourself a favor and play it at night with all the lights off, it’s awesome.
One of fav songs from ÆNIMA album.
i'm gonna keep asking till ya do it.. Break of Reality's cover of Lateralus. You did Tool's studio version, now check out their cover!
My husband always listen Tool and Metallica music in the car!
Hey Jamel. Cheers from Germany 🤘.My two favorite reactions from you are:
1.RATM - Renegades of funk
2.All your other reaction videos.
It's time you got to know the band Clutch from Maryland.
I recommend the Song "Regulator" ✌
I second this motion!
And spacegrass
Oh yeah prison planet, I’m from Maryland and grew up this these guys. The bassist daughter goes to my kids school now. I saw them with Primus like a year or 2 ago for free because he hooked me up with backstage passes. Got to love it
@@discgolfjunkie717 Yeah man, i went to five gigs here in Germany
and they blew my mind every damn time
all of the Clutch...:ghost" "regulator" "burning beard" and "swift death in texas" for the block of 4...doo eet!
The best concert ever!!!!
This may be my favorite song from a guitarists standpoint by Tool. I love the way Adam changes it up from verse/chorus to verse/chorus. Small, subtle changes keeping the song fresh. Such a good song.
This opened my eyes and mind when I first heard it as a kid...
This song is STEEPED in metaphor. From what I've been able to gather the lines from the 3rd verse pretty well sum up the intent behind the song.
'Something kinda sad about
The way that things have come to be
Desensitized to everything
What became of subtlety?
How can it mean anything to me
If I really don't feel anything at all?
I'll keep digging till
I feel something'
Essentially just speaking to how everything about our society, western culture, perhaps even globally, has been over-saturated and overstimulated to the point now where even the idea of having a super powerful micro computer in our pockets doesn't really seem to wow us...we get bored in no time and just buy a new one...always searching for that feeling of being alive and excited. Novelty is lost. This general theme then can be applied to many different contexts, including what you were talking about, going out and meeting new people, stepping outside of their comfort zones and all that. :0)
Great reaction as always man!
I love your metal reactions man!
Try "Born of Osiris -XIV & Behold" as you seem to appreciate instrumental understanding as well as talent as singer that's something you'd probably like to hear :)
Cheers from Finland!
Another excellent song by Tool, thanks for sharing.
I like the way you look at songs I've listened to dozens of times. You've given me new things to think about. Also GO NINERS!
DEATH GRIPS!!!!!!!!!!!
Deftones - 7 Words
I second this
Fuck yes
Ive suggested this one too...
I had a custom made Tool ring made when they were new. Wore it for 25+ years.
Watching your videos is almost like hearing the song for the first time again man, i get goosebumps, love your breakdown of the lyrics and how diverse your selection of reviews are on your channel. Keep doing what you do 🤙
Also, you're really good at seeing beyond the surface of a song and finding the deeper meanings. Good interpretation.
Oh he’s going deeper alright haha.
You should check out “Wings For Marie parts 1 & 2” it’s about Maynards mom.
Watched this reaction for years.... but still. "Lets see if he goes further ... "knuckle... elbow... shoulder " gets me ever time 😂😂
This is the best description of the song I have seen and it fits with how I see the song. "Every chorus of this song differ having at first "Finger deep" then "Knuckle deep" and then "Elbow deep... Shoulder deep". It represents the idea of how people tend to receive more and more pleasure until the extreme point because over-stimulation numbs their senses."
