This is why it's taught billet over rank. Doesn't matter if hes in E-1 and the officer is an O10, still billet over rank. Now will that ever happen, hell no lol. but the point is, billet over rank.
@@Zer0Mood the way we learned it in the marine corps was like this. We had 4 drill instructors. All of them were Staff sargeants. That's their rank. One of them was the senior drill instructor. That's his billet. So he basically he is in charge of the other 3 even though they're the same rank.
Completely false. Billet over rank is a concept that gives military law enforcement arrest and detainment authority over all ranks. Without it, the UCMJ requires that only officers of higher rank can make arrests. It has NO relevance on other aspects of military life or decorum. Don’t forget that an enlisted billet is factually never higher ranked than any commissioned billet.
Reminds me of a Chesty Puller story. once he came upon a second lieutenant who had ordered an enlisted man to salute him 100 times for missing a salute. Puller told the lieutenant, "You were absolutely correct in making him salute you 100 times, Lieutenant, but you know that an officer must return every salute he receives. Now return them all, and I will keep count."
Can I ask you about something. Why police members in the US are called officers, all of them. Like there is no solder and a lieutenant. They are all literally officers?
I've seen a 1st Sgt dress down a Lt. Colonel. The words "Respecfully, sir, it would be a career mistake for you to confuse YOUR rank with MY authority on this post" were used. The Colonel was made to do as he was told. Later a General was called. In the end, the Lt. Colonel was wrong, and got put in his place as he was trying to jump into someone else's chain of command, breaking post orders, for his and his wifes own personal convenience.

I worked in a big state prison, and one Captain required us to salute him, so everyday, when leaving roll call, we would each walk past him and salute. 75 individual salutes required him to return 75 salutes himself . After 2 days he rescinded his directive
The same we have in switzerland when we are in the military for the first time. The higher ranks always tell everybody to salute them, but also tells you that if everybody is doing it they will stop with the demand. So normally this goes on for the first 2 weeks and then you don't have to salute anymore.
When i did my military service in Austria, we had many officers acting like that. On December 31st we knew that the "Kommandant der Streitkräfte" was gonna visit. Like the 2nd most important person in line. He was transported in an unassuming VW Passat and we had alert level alpha, so everyone HAD to show their ID and get controlled for increased body temperature(Covid). Greeted them in the car formally and neutrally like everyone else. The other guys told me that they didn't wanna do the control since he's so high ranking. I ignored that(as always) and asked for ID from the driver and the officer. The driver had it ready but the officer was acting like "Don't you know me?" Of course i knew it was him since there was a picture of our most important military leaders in every building. "Sir, since we currently have alert level alpha, we have to control everyone entering and leaving the facility. Please show me ur ID" He mumbled sth about that this was unnecessary and that he didnt have time for that, but showed me his ID anyways. I let them pass and after the whole greeting ceremony for the guy he sent someone to get me. He asked me why i asked for ID even though i knew his face. I simply quoted the rules that come with alpha and he just said "Good job" and dismissed me

@@Zer0Mood the way we learned it in the marine corps was like this. We had 4 drill instructors. All of them were Staff sargeants. That's their rank. One of them was the senior drill instructor. That's his billet. So he basically he is in charge of the other 3 even though they're the same rank.
@@Zer0Mood basically position over rank, I can be a rank below someone but since I’m in a higher position I have the authority.
Yes however it is simple to show basic respect that is common and standard
Completely false. Billet over rank is a concept that gives military law enforcement arrest and detainment authority over all ranks. Without it, the UCMJ requires that only officers of higher rank can make arrests. It has NO relevance on other aspects of military life or decorum.
Don’t forget that an enlisted billet is factually never higher ranked than any commissioned billet.
My man stood his ground. Way to go buddy.
Well, this a scripted video, but it teaches others.

Now return them all, and I will keep count."

Chesty was special.
In my country, saluting an officer is a must but returning it is optional.

I worked in a big state prison, and one Captain required us to salute him, so everyday, when leaving roll call, we would each walk past him and salute. 75 individual salutes required him to return 75 salutes himself . After 2 days he rescinded his directive

Please show me ur ID"
He mumbled sth about that this was unnecessary and that he didnt have time for that, but showed me his ID anyways.
I let them pass and after the whole greeting ceremony for the guy he sent someone to get me. He asked me why i asked for ID even though i knew his face. I simply quoted the rules that come with alpha and he just said "Good job" and dismissed me
